Story About Monk With Psychic Powers | Ajahn Brahm

  • 0:02 - 0:04
There was one of these monks
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    and
  • 0:06 - 0:08
he was living in the Jungle
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    and
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    living in the jungle meditating
  • 0:12 - 0:15
in those days, people would be able
to feed you no problem at all
  • 0:16 - 0:19
and he had like perfect solitude,
    meditating day and night
  • 0:19 - 0:23
really good monk and of course
it just happens after time you get
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    these deep meditations and after
    deep meditations,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
sometimes you get these powers and
  • 0:29 - 0:33
actually he could fly through the air.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    He would just, every morning
  • 0:35 - 0:38
Just have a flight, almost like exercise
  • 0:39 - 0:43
but the trouble was, that somebody
    saw him.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
This is why, if any of you get psychic
    powers,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
please don't do them in public.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
cos you can always get into big trouble.
    Every time.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    So, somebody saw him
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    and of course, the word
    gets around
  • 0:58 - 1:01
and when the word gets around,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
For example, it not the case if you heard
  • 1:03 - 1:07
that someone at Dhammasara nun's monastery
    could fly through the air
  • 1:07 - 1:10
You'd all go down there and have a look
  • 1:10 - 1:12
and then you'd be hassling the nuns
  • 1:12 - 1:14
"come on show us, come on, come on"
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    (laughter)
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    but anyway, this monk,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
soon the word got to the king
  • 1:22 - 1:24
and the king said, I always wanted to see
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    a real monk levitating.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
Would you like to see a real monk
    levitate?
  • 1:28 - 1:31
Would you? Of course you would, yes
  • 1:31 - 1:34
So the king would, but we're not going
to do it so forget about it
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    (laughter)
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    But this king,
  • 1:38 - 1:39
You know, if you're the king
  • 1:39 - 1:41
you got powers so he sent his army
    up there
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    you know and said,
    "the king summons you."
  • 1:44 - 1:47
He said, I don't want to go to the palace,
    I'm just a simple monk"
  • 1:47 - 1:49
He said " this is not a request,
    you're coming"
  • 1:50 - 1:52
So you know, he brought him to the place.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
and the king was a really good Buddhist.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
He actually built a little 'kuti' ,
    a hut for this monk
  • 1:59 - 2:00
in the forest in the grounds.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
He said " Monk, just you know,
    you can just stay here"
  • 2:04 - 2:06
not you can, you will stay here
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    and
  • 2:08 - 2:10
I want to just feed you,
    make merit
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    make good kamma
  • 2:12 - 2:14
cos you're obviously a holy monk
  • 2:14 - 2:16
and to ask questions you know,
    about Dhamma
  • 2:16 - 2:18
and also get some advice on running
    my kingdom
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    cos you're obviously wise
  • 2:20 - 2:23
you're not in it for the money like
    all my ministers and politicians
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    you know, you're just wise
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    So, I'll feed you.
    You live here
  • 2:27 - 2:31
You can levitate and fly through the air
    as much as you like
  • 2:31 - 2:34
and I want you to be like my wise advisor.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
which made a lot of sense.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    So the monk consented
  • 2:38 - 2:41
and the king would feed him really
    nice food
  • 2:41 - 2:44
he'd be in this little forest
    in the palace grounds
  • 2:44 - 2:46
Just like being in the jungle
  • 2:46 - 2:49
and every morning he would go for his
    exercise through the air
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    but one day,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
as he was coming in to land
  • 2:54 - 2:58
that morning the person who was bringing
him food was one of the princesses
  • 2:59 - 3:01
cos the king couldn't come himself
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    and she was drop-dead gorgeous
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    a hot chick
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    (laughter)
  • 3:07 - 3:10
and this monk was just coming in to land
  • 3:10 - 3:13
and he just saw her, just one moment
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    that's all it took
    just one moment of lust
  • 3:16 - 3:18
and he lost his ability to fly
  • 3:19 - 3:21
and had to do crash landing
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    (laughter)
  • 3:25 - 3:29
and when he realised he couldn't fly after
    that
  • 3:29 - 3:33
    So he walked back.
After lunch he walked right back
  • 3:33 - 3:35
He didn't care about the king at all
  • 3:35 - 3:38
It took him 2 or 3 years to get his flying
    powers back again
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    That was how sensitive these
    psychic powers are
  • 3:42 - 3:44
So yes, there are psychic powers
  • 3:44 - 3:46
but just one bit of anger,
    one bit of lust
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    one bit of pride
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    they all vanish and disappear
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    that's how sensitive they are
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    So you guys,
  • 3:54 - 3:56
you know, because you're, you know,
    not the Bhikkhunis,
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    but you're not monks
  • 3:57 - 3:59
you haven't overcome anger and lust
  • 3:59 - 4:03
so please don't go flying through the air
  • 4:03 - 4:06
you'll go high up there and
    something will come up
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    somebody will make a noise
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    and "it's that person again"
  • 4:09 - 4:11
and you'll come crashing down to
    the ground again
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    and hurt yourself
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    that's why we don't do
    these psychic powers
  • 4:15 - 4:17
but that was the psychic power
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    a loooong time ago
  • 4:21 - 4:23
Is that what you wanted to hear?
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    Okay
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    What is mind?
