Scientists Defrost a 495 kg Squid !

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    Newsman: "At a New Zealand
    museum scientists
  • 0:03 - 0:06
are defrosting a rare 500 kg squid.
  • 0:06 - 0:09
They want to study the little known species
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    before preserving it for display.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    Let's take a look."
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Narrator: "Weighing in at just
    under half a ton
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    this is a huge catch.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
The Colossal Squid is the largest of its kind
  • 0:20 - 0:22
ever to be caught and preserved
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    now scientists at the
    museum in New Zealand
  • 0:25 - 0:27
are defrosting the creature and preparing it
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    for dissection.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
The scientists have up to eight hours
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    before it starts to decay
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    Marine biologist Stephen O'Shea
  • 0:37 - 0:39
says there's a lot to discover.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
O'Shea: "In 2003 when we had the first specimen
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    we didn't have any eyes.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
And when we put a gadget in the water here
  • 0:46 - 0:48
saw two of the most sensational eyes
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    and they're both perfect.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
So that is a highlight but that's
  • 0:51 - 0:53
probably the best thing so far.
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    And there's more to come."
  • 0:54 - 0:57
Narrator: "The huge eyes are 27 cm wide
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    and its tentacles lined with
    hundreds of sharp hooks
  • 1:01 - 1:03
so it can catch its prey.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
As for talking into a calamari starter
  • 1:05 - 1:09
it seems this squid doesn't taste too bad."
  • 1:09 - 1:11
O'Shea: "The interesting thing about it is
  • 1:11 - 1:14
that it was non-ammonical and that's the
  • 1:14 - 1:16
important thing as far as we are concerned.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    It tasted good apparently."
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    Narrator: "After dissection the squid
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    will be embalmed and displayed
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    at the museum."
  • 1:23 - 1:24
