  • 0:00 - 0:03
    [Music]
  • 0:03 - 0:05
hey welcome to make a mark studios
  • 0:05 - 0:08
my name is miss v and today we're going
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    to be drawing
  • 0:10 - 0:14
a half face digital cartoon portrait
  • 0:14 - 0:16
this is a really fun activity in which
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    half of the face
  • 0:17 - 0:19
is the photograph and half of the face
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    is a
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    digitally drawn cartoon portrait we're
  • 0:23 - 0:25
going to be using a free web-based
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    drawing program called clucky.com
  • 0:28 - 0:30
but you can use any digital drawing
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    program that you prefer
  • 0:32 - 0:34
i highly recommend it has the capability
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    to do layers
  • 0:36 - 0:37
the first thing you're going to want to
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    do is go to file
  • 0:40 - 0:42
import and choose the photo you want to
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    use
  • 0:44 - 0:46
choose it as a layer and then stretch it
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    to fit your canvas
  • 0:48 - 0:52
go to edit and crop to remove any excess
  • 0:52 - 0:52
    canvas
  • 0:52 - 0:55
if needed so that your photograph takes
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    up the entire
  • 0:56 - 0:59
canvas click the plus sign under the
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    layer tab
  • 1:00 - 1:03
and add a layer then click rename
  • 1:03 - 1:06
and rename it outline make sure that
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    this layer is above
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    your photograph then select your
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    photograph
  • 1:11 - 1:13
layer and bring the opacity down to
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    about 25
  • 1:17 - 1:20
on your outline layer you're going to
  • 1:20 - 1:20
    start
  • 1:20 - 1:22
by drawing a line that divides your
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    photo in half
  • 1:24 - 1:26
you can be creative with how you divide
  • 1:26 - 1:28
it it doesn't have to be a straight
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    horizontal or vertical line
  • 1:30 - 1:32
it can be a curvy line like this one
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    seen here
  • 1:34 - 1:35
and then you want to take your time
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    outlining all of the contours
  • 1:38 - 1:40
of the portrait when you're doing little
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    details
  • 1:41 - 1:45
like eyes make sure you zoom in
  • 1:46 - 1:48
using zoom in and zoom out icons in the
  • 1:48 - 1:51
top right on clucky you can control
  • 1:51 - 1:52
how close up you're looking at your
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    image and using the
  • 1:54 - 1:57
hand tool you can move around your
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    canvas
  • 1:59 - 2:01
let's take a little break to go over how
  • 2:01 - 2:04
to save your work on clicky
  • 2:04 - 2:07
you'll want to go to the file tab and
  • 2:07 - 2:09
you'll see a few different options
  • 2:09 - 2:12
you can click save which saves your work
  • 2:12 - 2:14
you can save it as a png
  • 2:14 - 2:17
psd which is a photoshop file or you can
  • 2:17 - 2:17
    save
  • 2:17 - 2:20
individual layers note that when you
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    save it as a png
  • 2:21 - 2:24
it will compress all of your layers into
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    one
  • 2:25 - 2:28
a good way to work is to browser storage
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    save it
  • 2:29 - 2:31
you'll see it says store and it stores
  • 2:31 - 2:33
the current state of your image
  • 2:33 - 2:35
and it'll be loaded again with layers
  • 2:35 - 2:38
each time that you open up clucky
  • 2:38 - 2:41
so if i were to exit out of clucky and
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    open it back up
  • 2:42 - 2:44
as long as i haven't done any major
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    reboot on my computer
  • 2:45 - 2:47
and deleted anything then you should
  • 2:47 - 2:51
still have all of your layers there
  • 2:51 - 2:53
so let's keep working our next step is
  • 2:53 - 2:55
to go to the layers tab
  • 2:55 - 2:56
and add another layer we're going to
  • 2:56 - 2:59
rename this layer the color layer
  • 2:59 - 3:00
and we're going to make sure we drag it
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    below the outline layer
  • 3:04 - 3:06
by dragging it below the outline layer
  • 3:06 - 3:08
we'll be able to color in
  • 3:08 - 3:10
our cartoon portrait but still be able
  • 3:10 - 3:13
to see those black lines on top
  • 3:13 - 3:15
just like before as you're adding color
  • 3:15 - 3:17
make sure that you zoom in to get finer
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    details
  • 3:19 - 3:21
you can change your brush size to get
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    better detail
  • 3:26 - 3:28
since this is a cartoon it doesn't have
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    to be realistically colored
  • 3:29 - 3:32
you can have fun with expressive color
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    in the hair
  • 3:33 - 3:47
    clothing and skin
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    [Music]
  • 3:50 - 3:52
the next step is to go back to the
  • 3:52 - 3:54
layers tab and we're going to add one
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    last layer
  • 3:55 - 4:01
and call this our background color layer
  • 4:01 - 4:03
we're going to drag this underneath the
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    color layer
  • 4:05 - 4:07
what's cool about that is that you'll be
  • 4:07 - 4:09
able to color in your background
  • 4:09 - 4:11
without affecting the color of the
  • 4:11 - 4:16
    cartoon on top
  • 4:16 - 4:18
as you work you might want to go back to
  • 4:18 - 4:19
    your photo layer
  • 4:19 - 4:21
and bring the opacity up just to get a
  • 4:21 - 4:24
feel for what it's starting to look like
  • 4:24 - 4:27
and your very last step is to start to
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    add some value and details
  • 4:29 - 4:31
going back to your color layer you can
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    use the eyedropper tool
  • 4:33 - 4:34
    to sample colors throughout your
  • 4:34 - 4:37
composition and then you can use the
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    blending brush
  • 4:38 - 4:41
which is the second brush tool in from
  • 4:41 - 4:42
    the left
  • 4:42 - 4:44
and you can explore different levels of
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    blending and opacity
  • 4:46 - 4:49
and different values of the colors
  • 4:49 - 4:50
your background doesn't have to be
  • 4:50 - 4:52
realistic you can get really fun and
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    expressive with this space
  • 4:54 - 4:58
add some patterns add some quirky
  • 4:58 - 5:08
    [Music]
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    details
  • 5:11 - 5:44
    [Music]
  • 5:44 - 5:46
as you work you might want to explore
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    the edit tab
  • 5:47 - 5:50
on clucky there's some cool features
  • 5:50 - 5:52
that you can do to certain layers
  • 5:52 - 5:54
like changing the hue and saturation to
  • 5:54 - 5:56
see what different colors would look
  • 5:56 - 5:56
    like
  • 5:56 - 6:00
    [Music]
  • 6:00 - 6:02
when you're done don't forget to save
  • 6:02 - 6:04
your work and here's my finished example
  • 6:04 - 6:07
of my half cartoon digitally drawn
  • 6:07 - 6:08
    portrait
  • 6:08 - 6:10
