Animation basics: Homemade special effects - TED-Ed
-
0:16 - 0:19How do you get from point A to point B?
-
0:29 - 0:34Why not spice it up with homemade special effects?
-
0:34 - 0:36A film is simply a series of images
-
0:36 - 0:39played in sequence to create the illusion of motion.
-
0:39 - 0:41If you manipulate those images,
-
0:41 - 0:44crazy things can happen.
-
0:44 - 0:48We used a tablet and one of the many stop motion apps out there.
-
0:48 - 0:52How do you get from point A to point B?
-
0:54 - 0:59We started off by taking a bunch of pictures of Celeste in place.
-
0:59 - 1:01Then, just like stop motion animation,
-
1:01 - 1:03the character is moved just a bit
-
1:03 - 1:05before the next picture is taken,
-
1:05 - 1:08which, in this case, creates a sliding effect.
-
1:15 - 1:18Here we use the oldest trick in the book.
-
1:18 - 1:19By alternating between photos
-
1:19 - 1:22of Celeste on-screen and off-screen,
-
1:22 - 1:26we've made her childhood dream of teleportation a reality.
-
1:26 - 1:29With a little creativity, there are a million ways
-
1:29 - 1:31you can used homemade special effects
-
1:31 - 1:32to make something as simple as
-
1:32 - 1:36getting from point A to point B much more fun.
-
2:57 - 2:59If you're at a loss for ideas,
-
2:59 - 3:01try finding inspiration in your surroundings,
-
3:01 - 3:02like the refrigerator
-
3:02 - 3:04and your coat rack.
-
3:14 - 3:15You can even try incorporating
-
3:15 - 3:17everyday objects from around your house,
-
3:17 - 3:19like, say, umbrellas
-
3:19 - 3:20or binder clips.
-
3:25 - 3:27Wherever there is an object,
-
3:27 - 3:30there is an opportunity to make it come to life.
-
3:32 - 3:34When humans are used in stop motion animation,
-
3:34 - 3:36that's called pixilation,
-
3:36 - 3:38a term coined in the mid-twentieth century,
-
3:38 - 3:42well before the word pixel was a part of our vocabulary.
-
3:42 - 3:44But these sorts of special effects
-
3:44 - 3:46are as old as the art of film making,
-
3:46 - 3:48and thanks to today's technologies,
-
3:48 - 3:52can be reproduced in your very own kitchen.
-
3:58 - 4:00Moving an object from point A to point B
-
4:00 - 4:03is a fundamental principle of animation.
-
4:03 - 4:04To learn more about the process
-
4:04 - 4:06and the tools we used,
-
