Happiness Is the Way | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh | #mindfulness

  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Breathing in,
  • 0:07 - 0:10
I know I am breathing in.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    And breathing out,
  • 0:16 - 0:19
I know I am breathing out.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
What is the use of doing that?
  • 0:28 - 0:33
If I say that, well, I do that because I want peace, I want happiness,
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    I want healing and transformation.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
So the practice is the means,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
and healing and transformation is the end.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
And the mean is not the end.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
That is a dualistic way of thinking.
  • 0:59 - 1:06
But in Plum Village we have the non-dualistic approach to healing, to practice.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
To breathe in in such a way that the healing
  • 1:13 - 1:17
takes place right away during the in-breath.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
You breathe in in such a way that peace can be there.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    Right?
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    In the in-breath.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
The in-breath is not a mean anymore.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    It is the end.
  • 1:35 - 1:39
So, there is no distinction between the means and the end.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
There is no way to happiness.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    Happiness is the way.
  • 1:45 - 1:49
You breathe in such a way that happiness should be in your in-breath.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
When you do walking meditation, you make a step in such a way
  • 1:55 - 1:59
that happiness should be in your step.
  • 2:01 - 2:07
You have to look for happiness and peace and transformation right in the present moment.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
In your in-breath and in your out-breath.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
And with some training, we can do that.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
We don't have to suffer when we breathe in.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
We don't have to suffer when we make a step.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
In fact, we should produce the energy of joy,
  • 2:35 - 2:38
healing, happiness when we breathe in.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
And we should be able to produce
  • 2:42 - 2:47
the energy of joy and happiness and peace when we make a step.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
We can train ourselves to do that.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
So breathing in, I know I'm breathing in.
  • 3:01 - 3:07
That is the first exercise of mindful breathing proposed by the Buddha.
  • 3:09 - 3:10
And we should breathe in in such a way,
  • 3:11 - 3:16
that there is relaxation, peace, happiness, joy in that in-breath.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    Because when you breathe in...
  • 3:23 - 3:25
you bring your attention to your in-breath.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
And your in breath becomes the only object of your mind.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
You focus your mind on your in-breath.
  • 3:38 - 3:41
And if you really focus your mind on you in-breath,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    you release everything else.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    You release the past,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    you release the future,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    you release your projects,
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    you release you anger.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
Because you are focusing only on one thing, that is your in-breath.
  • 4:02 - 4:08
So, one in-breath may take only three or four seconds.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
And yet, if you have concentration,
  • 4:12 - 4:15
then you can release everything else.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
You pick only one thing, the awareness of your in-breath.
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    You become a free person.
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    You are light.
  • 4:24 - 4:25
    You are free.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    Just in three seconds,
  • 4:31 - 4:35
snd you do not have to suffer during the time you breathe in.
  • 4:35 - 4:37
In fact, you can enjoy it deeply.
  • 4:40 - 4:42
My in-breath is some kind of vehicle,
  • 4:43 - 4:46
helping me to go home to my body.
  • 4:48 - 4:53
And when the mind is with the body, you are there,
  • 4:54 - 4:57
fully present in the here and now.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    Just in two, three seconds.
