The tale of the boy who tricked the Devil - Iseult Gillespie
-
0:07 - 0:10In the sun-dappled streets
of a small town, -
0:10 - 0:14a proud mother
showed off her newborn son. -
0:14 - 0:17Upon noticing his lucky birthmark,
-
0:17 - 0:20townsfolk predicted
he would marry a princess. -
0:20 - 0:25But soon, these rumors reached the ears
of the wicked king. -
0:25 - 0:30Enraged, the king stole the child away,
and sent him hurtling down the river. -
0:30 - 0:35But the infant’s luck proved greater
than the king’s plan. -
0:35 - 0:38Years later, the king
was traveling his realm, -
0:38 - 0:43when he spotted a strapping young man
with an uncanny birthmark. -
0:43 - 0:46After confirming the child’s origins,
-
0:46 - 0:51the sly king entrusted the boy
with a letter for the queen. -
0:51 - 0:55The youth eagerly set out
to deliver the message— -
0:55 - 1:00not knowing he was carrying
his own death sentence. -
1:00 - 1:04That night, roaming bandits
stumbled upon his camp. -
1:04 - 1:08Yet when they read the brutal letter,
they were filled with pity. -
1:08 - 1:13Deciding to make trouble for the king
instead, they scribbled a new note. -
1:13 - 1:16As soon as the youth
arrived at the palace, -
1:16 - 1:19he locked eyes with the princess.
-
1:19 - 1:22The two felt destined for each other.
-
1:22 - 1:25And when the queen read
that the king approved this union, -
1:25 - 1:28she joyfully organized
a whirlwind wedding. -
1:28 - 1:32When the king returned,
he was furious. -
1:32 - 1:36But he couldn’t execute his daughter’s
beloved without reason. -
1:36 - 1:40So he devised a diabolical trial.
-
1:40 - 1:44He ordered the youth
to travel to Hell itself, -
1:44 - 1:50and return with three golden hairs
freshly plucked from the Devil’s head. -
1:50 - 1:54Only upon succeeding
could he return to his bride. -
1:54 - 1:59The youth searched across the land
for the entrance to Hell, -
1:59 - 2:02until he finally reached
an eerie village. -
2:02 - 2:06Here, he saw some villagers
gathered around a well. -
2:06 - 2:10They closed in on the youth,
refusing to let him pass -
2:10 - 2:15until he answered their question:
why was the well dry? -
2:15 - 2:20The youth replied,
“I will answer when I return.” -
2:20 - 2:23They directed him further into town,
-
2:23 - 2:28where he came across another set
of villagers contemplating a gnarled tree. -
2:28 - 2:33They refused to let him pass
until he answered their question: -
2:33 - 2:35why was the tree barren?
-
2:35 - 2:41Again, the youth responded,
“I will answer when I return." -
2:41 - 2:46These villagers guided him to the dock,
where an elderly ferryman awaited. -
2:46 - 2:52As he paddled through the black water,
the ferryman rasped a third question: -
2:52 - 2:56how can I escape my interminable task?
-
2:56 - 3:03Once more, the youth promised,
“I will answer when I return.” -
3:03 - 3:09At last, they reached a hut sinking
into the swampy banks of Hell. -
3:09 - 3:13Reluctantly, the youth knocked
on the rotting door. -
3:13 - 3:16The devil’s grandmother
answered his call. -
3:16 - 3:21She was known to help some visiting souls,
and harm others. -
3:21 - 3:25The youth had just finished his story
when they heard the devil’s footsteps. -
3:25 - 3:29Without warning,
the boy’s world appeared to shrink. -
3:29 - 3:33The devil’s grandmother lifted him
into the folds of her sleeve, -
3:33 - 3:36and welcomed her grandson.
-
3:36 - 3:42The old woman set to work,
lavishing the devil with food and drink. -
3:42 - 3:49When he fell asleep, she deftly plucked
three gleaming hairs from his head. -
3:49 - 3:54With each plucked hair, the Devil briefly
awoke and complained about his dreams, -
3:54 - 3:57full of nearby villagers
and their problems. -
3:59 - 4:02The next morning, the youth departed—
-
4:02 - 4:08armed with three golden hairs,
and three pieces of information. -
4:08 - 4:12He shared the devil’s first dream
with the ferryman. -
4:12 - 4:15If the boatman could hand his oars
to a willing passenger, -
4:15 - 4:19he would be free from his task.
-
4:19 - 4:22Back at the village, the youth declared
that there was a mouse -
4:22 - 4:28gnawing at the root of the tree,
and an enormous toad blocking the well. -
4:28 - 4:32The villagers rewarded him handsomely
for his help. -
4:32 - 4:37Back from his journey, the youth thrust
the devil’s hairs at the king— -
4:37 - 4:42but his greedy father-in-law
only had eyes for the gold. -
4:42 - 4:46The sly youth told the king
that even greater wealth awaited him -
4:46 - 4:48across the river.
-
4:48 - 4:52Immediately, the king
hastened to the riverbank. -
4:52 - 4:54Eager to claim his riches,
-
4:54 - 4:58he held out his hands impatiently
to the grinning ferryman— -
4:58 - 5:01who happily handed over his oars.
