-
0:05 - 0:07>> Sheryl Burgstahler: What we're
trying to do in the DO-IT Center -
0:07 - 0:09is to help students
with disabilities -
0:09 - 0:12be successful in
college and careers, -
0:12 - 0:15but also using technology
as an empowering tool. -
0:15 - 0:18I founded the DO-IT
program in 1992 -
0:18 - 0:20with a grant from the
National Science Foundation. -
0:20 - 0:23Many of our projects are funded by
the National Science Foundation, -
0:23 - 0:25for example, AccessComputing.
-
0:25 - 0:28We work with computing
faculty nationwide -
0:28 - 0:31to help them include students
with disabilities in their programs. -
0:31 - 0:33We have a similar project
called AccessEngineering -
0:33 - 0:35where we work with
engineering faculty. -
0:35 - 0:40Another project that we have is called
AccessISL, Informal Science Learning, -
0:40 - 0:43and there we're working with people
that develop museum exhibits, -
0:43 - 0:47helping them make them more accessible
to people with disabilities. -
0:47 - 0:49The DO-IT Scholars program
-
0:49 - 0:52is where we work with teens with disabilities,
get them ready for college and careers. -
0:52 - 0:56>> Scott Bellman: For the DO-IT Scholars program,
we'd like to start engaging students and families -
0:56 - 0:58when they're sophomores in high school.
-
0:58 - 1:02And that’s very intentional because
we invite them to come and live with us -
1:02 - 1:04on the university campus
for three summers -
1:04 - 1:07and we like to have
after those experiences occur -
1:07 - 1:09after their sophomore year,
after their junior year -
1:09 - 1:11and then as they're
graduating high school. -
1:11 - 1:13When the DO-IT Scholars
are at summer camp, -
1:13 - 1:16they take a lot of classes
and courses with us. -
1:16 - 1:20And so some of those are related
to leadership and advocacy. -
1:20 - 1:22Some of those are related to
different career fields -
1:22 - 1:23that they might
want to learn about -
1:23 - 1:26and some of it is related
to college access -
1:26 - 1:31and how to advocate for what you
might need in a college environment. -
1:31 - 1:34For their third summer
as high school graduates, -
1:34 - 1:36many of whom have been
accepted into college, -
1:36 - 1:39they work as leaders and mentors
to the younger students. -
1:39 - 1:43>> Randy: I was one of the
first DO-IT Scholars. -
1:43 - 1:47The mentorship that I had
early on from DO-IT -
1:47 - 1:53was sufficient to show me
how to actually mentor people. -
1:53 - 1:58And that has specifically influenced my career
because I manage people now. -
1:58 - 2:02>> Anita: The DO-IT Scholars program
taught me that I really need to be -
2:02 - 2:04willing to advocate for myself.
-
2:04 - 2:09>> Kayla Brown: I got into the program
when I was a junior in high school -
2:09 - 2:14and that was the first time that I met
other people with disabilities who -
2:14 - 2:19wanted to go to college, and were
thinking about a career even beyond. -
2:19 - 2:21>> Sheryl: I've hired
a lot of people in my life -
2:21 - 2:25and I've never hired them
because of what they can't do. -
2:25 - 2:26It's always because of
what they can do -
2:26 - 2:31and the DO-IT program, these kids
have an opportunity to meet adults -
2:31 - 2:34that see their opportunities before them
-
2:34 - 2:36and figure out how they can
maximize the use of those skills -
2:36 - 2:39and interests they have
to be successful. -
