-
There is a longing
-
within every human heart
-
A hunger in the soul.
-
A thirst that can’t be satisfied.
-
Deep inside we long for something more,
-
more than what is in our world.
-
King Solomon circa 950 BC
-
“I wanted to see what was
worthwhile for men to do under heaven
-
during the few days of their lives.”
-
“I devoted myself to study...”
-
“I thought in my heart,
-
'What then do I gain by being wise?
-
For the wise man, like the fool, will be forgotten.' ”
-
“I tried cheering myself with wine and embracing folly.”
-
“I refused my heart no pleasure.”
-
“Yet... everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”
-
“I undertook great projects.”
-
“I built...”
-
“I bought...”
-
“I owned...”
-
“I became greater...”
-
“Whoever loves wealth is never satisfied...”
-
“So my heart began to despair...”
-
“Generations come and generations go...”
-
“...Even the memory of them is forgotten.
-
Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished.”
-
“...No man knows when his hour will come.”
-
“...Death is the destiny of every man...”
-
“...I was still searching but not finding.”
-
There is One,
-
One who can bring meaning, fulfillment, joy
-
and peace to your life.
-
For He is the only One who can fill the void.
-
He is the only One who can quench the thirst within our souls.
-
And until we find Him there is a restless yearning,
-
a longing that He put in our hearts.
-
Because just as thirst is necessary
-
to draw someone to water,
-
these longings within our heart were meant to call us to God.
-
You see, within the heart of every human being,
-
He has placed eternity.
-
And nothing but the eternal God can truly satisfy us.
-
Not Synced
And it is through His book, the Bible,
-
Not Synced
that you will be introduced
-
Not Synced
to this eternal God,
-
Not Synced
the One you were made to know.
-
Not Synced
But, before we actually open up the Bible
-
Not Synced
and begin to see what it says,
-
Not Synced
there's some important facts about the Bible that we need to know.
-
Not Synced
The Bible is actually a collection of 66 individual writings, called books.
-
Not Synced
And even the name 'Bible' comes from a Greek word that means 'books'.
-
Not Synced
And if you open up your Bibles,
-
Not Synced
in the first few pages you'll find a list of these books.
-
Not Synced
And these books have been divided into two different sections
-
Not Synced
known as the Old and New Testaments.
-
Not Synced
Also, you'll find to make reading easier,
-
Not Synced
they've divided each book up into chapters and verses.
-
Not Synced
Throughout this series, the reference for each verse that we're going to read
-
Not Synced
is going to appear on your screen
-
Not Synced
so that you can see the name of the book,
-
Not Synced
the chapter and the verse.
-
Not Synced
So, follow along in your Bible
-
Not Synced
to verify the accuracy of everything that you hear,
-
Not Synced
so that your confidence will be in what God says.
-
Not Synced
Throughout time,
-
Not Synced
the Bible has consistently remained the world’s best seller.
-
Not Synced
The Bible, or parts of it,
-
Not Synced
have been translated into almost 2,500 different languages!
-
Not Synced
It is the most quoted,
-
Not Synced
most read,
-
Not Synced
most printed book in all of history.
-
Not Synced
This book has influenced, touched
-
Not Synced
and completely transformed countless lives throughout the ages.
-
Not Synced
But where did the Bible come from? Who wrote it?
-
Not Synced
God used 40 different men to write the Bible.
-
Not Synced
But what you need to understand is
-
Not Synced
this book came about in a totally unique and fascinating way.
-
Not Synced
Not only did many of these men never meet,
-
Not Synced
many of them were never alive during the same time period!
-
Not Synced
The Bible was written over a period of 1,600 years.
-
Not Synced
And many of these men lived in completely different places,
-
Not Synced
ranging from ancient Babylon to Rome.
-
Not Synced
The manuscripts that make up the Bible
-
Not Synced
were written in Europe, Asia, and Africa,
-
Not Synced
and recorded in three different major languages of that day:
-
Not Synced
Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.
-
Not Synced
Not only did the authors live in different locations
-
Not Synced
and during different time periods,
-
Not Synced
they also came from a wide range of professions.
-
Not Synced
One of the authors was an Egyptian prince,
-
Not Synced
another, a military leader,
-
Not Synced
others were fisherman,
-
Not Synced
even some of them were shepherds.
-
Not Synced
One of the authors was a doctor.
-
Not Synced
And even another was a tax collector for the Roman Empire!
-
Not Synced
And that's just naming a few of the authors!
-
Not Synced
But somebody might think that such diverse circumstances
-
Not Synced
would produce a book that is full of contradictions.
-
Not Synced
But the truth is, that these diverse manuscripts
-
Not Synced
came together perfectly.
-
Not Synced
2 Timothy 3:16 explains
-
Not Synced
that the Bible was breathed out by God.
-
Not Synced
And in 2 Peter 1:21
-
Not Synced
it tells us that the words of this book
-
Not Synced
never had their origin in the will of man.
-
Not Synced
“...but men spoke from God
-
Not Synced
as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
-
Not Synced
He was telling them exactly what they should write.
-
Not Synced
For example, Jeremiah 1:2 begins with this phrase:
-
Not Synced
" And The word of the Lord came to him."
-
Not Synced
There are over 3,800 phrases
-
Not Synced
just like this one found in the Bible.
-
Not Synced
Each one emphasizing that God is the true author of this book.
-
Not Synced
Because God is the author of the Bible,
-
Not Synced
it means that this account is accurate historically.
-
Not Synced
Throughout the ages,
-
Not Synced
archaeology has confirmed the accuracy of the Bible
-
Not Synced
thousands of times.
-
Not Synced
Even the most minute details, of little known passages
-
Not Synced
have proven to be historically sound.
-
Not Synced
For example, in chapter 20 of Isaiah
-
Not Synced
there is an event in which,
-
Not Synced
"...the supreme commander sent by Sargon, King of Assyria came to Ashdod
-
Not Synced
and attacked and captured it."
-
Not Synced
Historians were familiar with the Assyrian empire
-
Not Synced
but a king named Sargon attacking a city called Ashdod?
-
Not Synced
Some critics of the Bible
-
Not Synced
actually questioned the veracity of this account.
-
Not Synced
But in 1843, a startling discovery was made
-
Not Synced
in an excavation in northern Iraq
-
Not Synced
in a village called Khorsabad.
-
Not Synced
Paul-Émile Botta, a renowned archaeologist,
-
Not Synced
unearthed the palace of King Sargon.
-
Not Synced
And there to the astonishment of the critic,
-
Not Synced
was engraved on the palace walls
-
Not Synced
a description of the same event described in the Bible-
-
Not Synced
the attack of King Sargon on the city of Ashdod.
-
Not Synced
Time Magazine once ran an article
-
Not Synced
on the former Dean of Archaeologists in Palestine,
-
Not Synced
Dr. Nelson Glueck.
-
Not Synced
The article, 'The Shards of History' said that:
-
Not Synced
“With the Bible's help, Dr. Nelson Glueck
-
Not Synced
has discovered more than 1,000 ancient sites in the Transjordan area
-
Not Synced
and another 500 in the Negev.”
-
Not Synced
Dr. Nelson Glueck wrote a book called 'Rivers in the Desert'.
-
Not Synced
In it he said
-
Not Synced
there has never been an archaeological discovery
-
Not Synced
that has contradicted the Bible.
-
Not Synced
The world renowned Scottish professor
-
Not Synced
of the University of Oxford,
-
Not Synced
Sir William Ramsay,
-
Not Synced
concluded that this book
-
Not Synced
was not only a completely reliable historical account,
-
Not Synced
but that it had to be the very words of God Himself.
-
Not Synced
The Bible contains hundreds of prophecies foretelling future events.
-
Not Synced
In Psalm 22, King David described crucifixion
-
Not Synced
400 years before it was used as a form of capital punishment.
-
Not Synced
In Isaiah 44, a King called Cyrus is mentioned by name
-
Not Synced
150 years before his reign.
-
Not Synced
In Isaiah 39, he foretold the fall of Jerusalem
-
Not Synced
100 years before it was taken over by the Babylonians.
-
Not Synced
Also in a book called Daniel,
-
Not Synced
there are 135 prophecies in chapter 11 alone.
-
Not Synced
Prophecies so precise
-
Not Synced
that they describe major alliances,
-
Not Synced
battles, marriages and even murder.
-
Not Synced
And this same book
-
Not Synced
foretold the rise and fall of four major empires:
-
Not Synced
the Babylonian, Medo-Persian, Grecian and Roman.
-
Not Synced
Critics don’t know what to do with this book.
-
Not Synced
The Bible has one running plot
-
Not Synced
that connects all the details and events together.
-
Not Synced
Throughout all the drama and descriptions,
-
Not Synced
there is one theme that makes the whole story make sense.
-
Not Synced
And it’s this one message of the Bible,
-
Not Synced
this central plot
-
Not Synced
that we are going to watch unfold as we study this book together.
-
Not Synced
But unlike any other book,
-
Not Synced
the message of the Bible is divine
-
Not Synced
and it has the power to completely transform your life.
-
Not Synced
So, what is this eternal story of the Bible?
-
Not Synced
Well, what better place to start, than the beginning?
-
Not Synced
The first thing we can learn about God,
-
Not Synced
is right here in the very first verse of the Bible.
-
Not Synced
So open your Bible to Genesis 1:1.
-
Not Synced
[Genesis 1:1] "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
-
Not Synced
As you can see, there's no explanation here.
-
Not Synced
The verse simply says,
-
Not Synced
that in the beginning God was already there.
-
Not Synced
That before time began, God already existed.
-
Not Synced
That's because God is eternal.
-
Not Synced
He never had a beginning
-
Not Synced
and He will never have an end.
-
Not Synced
That’s hard for our minds to grasp.
-
Not Synced
That’s because we humans are confined by time.
-
Not Synced
We can talk about the past and those yesterdays.
-
Not Synced
We can remember all those days that have gone by,
-
Not Synced
but we can't go back in time.
-
Not Synced
We can make plans for tomorrow and even dream about the future,
-
Not Synced
but we can't go ahead in time, even one minute.
-
Not Synced
But God isn’t like that.
-
Not Synced
God is outside of time.
-
Not Synced
God is present in the past, the present and the future,
-
Not Synced
all at the same time.
-
Not Synced
Psalm 90 verse 2 puts it this way,
-
Not Synced
[Psalm 90:2] "From everlasting to everlasting you are God."
-
Not Synced
He never changes, never gets tired, and never diminishes.
-
Not Synced
God is eternal.
-
Not Synced
Just as God is not limited by time, God is not limited by space.
-
Not Synced
We humans are completely limited by space.
-
Not Synced
No matter how much we’d like to be in more than one place at a time,
-
Not Synced
we can’t.
-
Not Synced
No matter how fast we travel,
-
Not Synced
or how much our schedule demands of us,
-
Not Synced
we can only be in one place at a time.
-
Not Synced
But God? God is not like that.
-
Not Synced
The Bible says that God is all present.
-
Not Synced
In other words,
-
Not Synced
God is everywhere at the same time.
-
Not Synced
That is why David in Psalm 139 wrote,
-
Not Synced
[Psalm 139:4,7-10] “You hem me in behind and before,
-
Not Synced
you have laid your hand upon me.
-
Not Synced
Where can I go from your Spirit?
-
Not Synced
Where can I flee from your presence?
-
Not Synced
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
-
Not Synced
if I make my bed in the depths you are there.
-
Not Synced
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
-
Not Synced
if I settle on the far side of the seas,
-
Not Synced
even there your hand will guide me,
-
Not Synced
your right hand will hold me fast.”
-
Not Synced
There is something else that we discover about God
-
Not Synced
in these first four words.
-
Not Synced
The book of Genesis was written in a language called Hebrew.
-
Not Synced
And the word for 'God' in Hebrew is 'Elohim'.
-
Not Synced
But you may be thinking,
-
Not Synced
“Why is that so important?”
-
Not Synced
In Hebrew, if you wanted to say 'angel'
-
Not Synced
you would say 'seraph'.
-
Not Synced
But if you wanted to say 'angels' plural,
-
Not Synced
you would say 'seraphim.'
-
Not Synced
So are you beginning to catch on?
-
Not Synced
In Hebrew, whenever you see
-
Not Synced
an 'im' on the end of the word
-
Not Synced
that makes it plural.
-
Not Synced
So, why does the word for God, 'Elohim' have an 'im' on the end of it?
-
Not Synced
The plural ending found in the name 'Elohim',
-
Not Synced
is the very first indication we have in the Bible
-
Not Synced
that the One God reveals Himself to be three persons:
-
Not Synced
that God is triune.
-
Not Synced
The word 'triune' is a term adopted by scholars
-
Not Synced
to describe a characteristic of God
-
Not Synced
found throughout the Bible.
-
Not Synced
Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum,
-
Not Synced
the renowned Hebrew scholar wrote
-
Not Synced
that the Hebrew scriptures portray God to be one in three persons.
-
Not Synced
And the New Testament sheds even more light on the subject,
-
Not Synced
revealing Him to be Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--
-
Not Synced
each one being eternal, equal and distinct.
-
Not Synced
The truth is, is that God is infinite.
-
Not Synced
For us humans who are finite, to fully comprehend God
-
Not Synced
would be like expecting little ants to be able to learn how to read.
-
Not Synced
It would be impossible for them to grasp
-
Not Synced
even the most basic concepts of our language.
-
Not Synced
In the same way, in this book,
-
Not Synced
God has told us many things about His nature.
-
Not Synced
But it would be impossible for us to fully comprehend God.
-
Not Synced
But, we can trust what the Bible says to be true about Him.
-
Not Synced
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
-
Not Synced
God, He is the Designer and Creator
-
Not Synced
of everything that exists.
-
Not Synced
But, what material did God use to create everything?
-
Not Synced
If you’re following along in your Bible, look with me at verse three.
-
Not Synced
[Genesis 1:3] “And God said; 'Let there be light.' and there was light.”
-
Not Synced
So what’s written here? It says "And God said".
-
Not Synced
It doesn't say "And then God put together",
-
Not Synced
or "And then God formed", or "God molded". No!
-
Not Synced
By the power of the word of God, He created everything.
-
Not Synced
God created all things,
-
Not Synced
and in Hebrews 1:3 we read
-
Not Synced
that by His power He continues to hold all things together.
-
Not Synced
So, if God can create all things,
-
Not Synced
and also sustain the universe in all of its vastness,
-
Not Synced
what could be impossible for God?
-
Not Synced
Nothing!
-
Not Synced
Guess what? More than fifty times in the Bible,
-
Not Synced
God is described as all-powerful.
-
Not Synced
Yet, when you face a serious problem in your family
-
Not Synced
or in a relationship,
-
Not Synced
when the challenge of one more day of school
-
Not Synced
or of work, or of just life seems too much,
-
Not Synced
when your future seems to offer no hope, where do you go?
-
Not Synced
With whom do you seek counsel?
-
Not Synced
Go to your Creator,
-
Not Synced
because what’s impossible for you, is not impossible with God.
-
Not Synced
It’s through the Bible that you will get to know Him.
-
Not Synced
And this all-powerful God says in His Word,
-
Not Synced
"Come to me.
-
Not Synced
Trust in me.
-
Not Synced
I care for you."
-
Not Synced
Not only is God all-powerful,
-
Not Synced
but the Bible says that God is all knowing.
-
Not Synced
Have you ever stopped to consider
-
Not Synced
how much knowledge it would take
-
Not Synced
to design the heavens and the earth
-
Not Synced
with foresight to every intricate detail and function?
-
Not Synced
We look in wonder into giant telescopes
-
Not Synced
at how vast, and incredibly complex our universe is.
-
Not Synced
Or we peer into microscopes at finely tuned biological organisms
-
Not Synced
with DNA structures we are just now beginning to unravel.
-
Not Synced
The world’s best scientists power up the largest machines
-
Not Synced
ever known to man,
-
Not Synced
to study atomic systems so complicated,
-
Not Synced
we will never fully understand them.
-
Not Synced
But the designer of this universe does,
-
Not Synced
for God is all knowing.
-
Not Synced
Psalm 147:5 says-
-
Not Synced
[Psalm 147:5] “Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
-
Not Synced
His understanding has no limit.”
-
Not Synced
What is even more amazing, is that this incredible God
-
Not Synced
understands everything and knows the
-
Not Synced
complexities of this universe,
-
Not Synced
this same God, chose to know me personally.
-
Not Synced
So many times we feel so alone, and we think
-
Not Synced
"No one even knows I exist!"
-
Not Synced
But it is through this book, the Bible,
-
Not Synced
that you will be introduced to someone
-
Not Synced
who not only knows your name,
-
Not Synced
but chooses to know every single thing about you.
-
Not Synced
Psalm 139 says,
-
Not Synced
"O LORD, you have searched me, and you know me.
-
Not Synced
You know when I sit and when I rise;
-
Not Synced
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
-
Not Synced
Before a word is on my tongue,
-
Not Synced
you know it completely, O LORD.
-
Not Synced
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
-
Not Synced
too lofty for me to attain.
-
Not Synced
For you created my inmost being;
-
Not Synced
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
-
Not Synced
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
-
Not Synced
all the days ordained for me were written in Your book
-
Not Synced
before one of them came to be."
-
Not Synced
You were created by this wonderful God.
-
Not Synced
He is the One your heart longs for.
-
Not Synced
That's why God has given us His word:
-
Not Synced
the Bible.
-
Not Synced
Because knowing Him is the reason for this life,
-
Not Synced
in a relationship that goes beyond this life
-
Not Synced
and lasts forever.
-
Not Synced
And today, could be just the beginning.
-
Not Synced
There is a longing within the heart of every human being.
-
Not Synced
This week, take time out to notice the brevity of life
-
Not Synced
and the restlessness that drives people everywhere
-
Not Synced
to pursue the satisfaction of the thirst within their souls.
-
Not Synced
Remember that these longings in your heart
-
Not Synced
were meant to call you to God,
-
Not Synced
the only One who can truly satisfy you.
-
Not Synced
To record the words of the Bible,
-
Not Synced
God used forty different authors,
-
Not Synced
living in different time periods,
-
Not Synced
in different places,
-
Not Synced
writing in three different languages.
-
Not Synced
Yet, amazingly from these diverse manuscripts,
-
Not Synced
one eternal story emerges.
-
Not Synced
You too, can examine the thousands of archaeological discoveries
-
Not Synced
that verify the Bible’s accuracy
-
Not Synced
and the astounding prophecies foretelling future events.
-
Not Synced
As you do, remember that the very words of this Book
-
Not Synced
were written by God for you.
-
Not Synced
In Genesis 1:1, we saw how God is eternal and triune.
-
Not Synced
We also saw how He is all-powerful,
-
Not Synced
creating the world by simply speaking!
-
Not Synced
The challenges you face in your life may seem impossible,
-
Not Synced
but they are not impossible for this Almighty God
-
Not Synced
who says,
-
Not Synced
"Come to Me! I care for you!"
-
Not Synced
We saw God is all-present.
-
Not Synced
As the Designer of this universe,
-
Not Synced
He understands its every single intricate detail and function.
-
Not Synced
You may feel alone, thinking no one even knows you exist.
-
Not Synced
But this same God chooses to know you personally
-
Not Synced
and already knows everything about you.
-
Not Synced
Now you have an opportunity to get to know Him
-
Not Synced
through His Word, the Bible.
