4 Easy Tennis Drills to Improve Your Backhand (Beginner Tennis Lesson)

  • 0:08 - 0:08
    Hey guys,
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    welcome back to my channel.
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    Now,
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    in today's video,
  • 0:11 - 0:14
I'm gonna be speaking to you about how to hit a double-handed backhand.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    Compared to the forehand side,
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    the backhand is generally
  • 0:18 - 0:20
the weakest side for most players,
  • 0:20 - 0:25
and it's a side that takes the longest to learn and master for many tennis players.
  • 0:25 - 0:25
    Now,
  • 0:25 - 0:29
I'm gonna be talking about the double-handed backhand in this video,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
and the double-handed backhand is quite a
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    complex shot to learn,
  • 0:33 - 0:36
and it's so complex because of the coordination
  • 0:36 - 0:39
needed in order to hit the ball and as well,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
having two hands on the racket
  • 0:41 - 0:45
is a whole lot different to the forehand side with just one hand on the racket.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
Now you've got your non-dominant hand
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    involved in the stroke too.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
So, it takes a lot of coordination
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    and timing,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
and it will take a lot of practice in order to develop
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    a really strong double-handed backhand.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    So, in today's video,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
I'm going to be giving you some really key drills
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    to learn the double-handed backhand.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
And each of these drills are gonna be progressions on one another,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
so you can just easily follow along to
  • 1:10 - 1:13
this video to really progress your double-handed backhand.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
So, before we get into the progressions,
  • 1:15 - 1:18
the first thing that I want to talk about is the grip.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    So, with your dominant hand,
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    you will want to find
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    the chopper grip
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    or the continental grip.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
Now if you don't know your grips,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
then I will link another video here that you can go and watch quickly
  • 1:30 - 1:35
that will talk you through all of the different tennis grips in detail.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
But for those of you that know your grips,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
we're gonna go with the chopper grip
  • 1:39 - 1:42
or the continental grip with your dominant hand,
  • 1:42 - 1:44
and your non-dominant hand comes on top,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
and you're going to find the eastern forehand grip
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    with your non-dominant hand.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
This grip is great because it allows you to hit with both topspin and
  • 1:53 - 1:57
you can hit through the ball to hit a flatter shot as well.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
Some players play with a semi-western
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    grip
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    with their non-dominant hand,
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    including myself.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    I use a semi-western,
  • 2:06 - 2:06
    more of a semi-western grip
  • 2:07 - 2:09
somewhere between an eastern and a semi-western.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
That's just because I play with quite a lot of topspin.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
So, I find that more comfortable for my game to be able to brush up
  • 2:16 - 2:18
the ball and really generate more heavy topspin
  • 2:18 - 2:21
with my backhand compared to flattening out.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
So, now we've discussed the grip,
  • 2:23 - 2:26
we're just gonna get straight into our drills and progressions.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
So, let's get into the first drill.
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    Okay guys,
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    so for the first drill,
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    you don't need your racket,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
you're just gonna grab a tennis ball.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
So, this drill is called the drop and catch drill.
  • 2:36 - 2:41
And this drill is great for learning your timing and your swing mechanics.
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    So, with your dominant hand,
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    you're gonna hold the ball,
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    and with your non-dominant hand,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    you're gonna catch the ball.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
So, you're gonna start with your non-dominant hand up here,
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    as if you were
  • 2:52 - 2:54
in the back of the takeback,
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    and then you're gonna find
  • 2:56 - 3:01
a nice wide base so that I'm facing sideways on in a closed stance.
  • 3:02 - 3:02
    With
  • 3:03 - 3:03
    my dominant hand,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
I'm gonna hold the ball out to the side
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    with a little bit
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    of an angle,
  • 3:08 - 3:09
so if I drop the ball,
  • 3:09 - 3:13
I'm imagining where I would make contact which is out in front and to the side.
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    So, I'm here,
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    I bounce,
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    I hit,
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    and I follow through.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
My hand is acting as my racket here.
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    So, in tennis,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
the racket is essentially an extension
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    of your hand.
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    So, if we can learn
  • 3:28 - 3:32
the correct swing mechanic and timing
  • 3:32 - 3:34
just with a ball and a hand,
  • 3:34 - 3:38
then that's gonna really help us when we get to using that bigger racket.
  • 3:38 - 3:39
You're just gonna be thinking to yourself,
  • 3:39 - 3:40
what did I do with my hand?
  • 3:41 - 3:43
The racket is an extension of the hand.
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    So, this drill is really,
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    really great.
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    And again,
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    bounce and hit,
  • 3:47 - 3:49
so it really helps with your timing,
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    bounce and hit,
  • 3:50 - 3:52
and you can even say to yourself,
  • 3:53 - 3:53
    bounce,
  • 3:54 - 3:54
    hit.
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    So, you can see
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    I'm starting here,
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    drop,
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    and then I'm following through.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
And you could see as I
  • 4:02 - 4:02
    come
  • 4:03 - 4:05
and come in to catch the ball,
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    my hip is rotating,
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    and my back foot
  • 4:09 - 4:10
    is lifting up.
  • 4:11 - 4:11
    So, this
  • 4:11 - 4:14
mimics what you do with your real backhand.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    Starting here,
  • 4:16 - 4:16
    bounce,
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    hit and rotate forward.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
I'm finishing with my non-dominant elbow
  • 4:22 - 4:22
    up,
  • 4:23 - 4:23
    pointing
  • 4:24 - 4:26
to the other side of the court.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    Bounce and hit.
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    So, guys,
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    once you're comfortable with that,
  • 4:30 - 4:34
once you've done 10 to 20 reps and you've really nailed that down,
  • 4:34 - 4:34
    you feel
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    that timing is perfect,
  • 4:37 - 4:39
then now you can move on to the next drill.
  • 4:39 - 4:40
    Okay guys,
  • 4:40 - 4:42
so now we need our racket in our hand,
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    a racket and a ball.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    So,
  • 4:44 - 4:46
this drill is called floor tennis.
  • 4:46 - 4:46
    Now,
  • 4:46 - 4:48
you might have heard of floor tennis before,
  • 4:48 - 4:49
    it's really,
  • 4:49 - 4:50
    really great drill
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    for beginners
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    to
  • 4:52 - 4:52
    learn
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    swing mechanics without having
  • 4:55 - 4:57
to worry too much about an incoming ball.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
So, we're gonna put the ball down onto the ground.
  • 5:00 - 5:00
    Again,
  • 5:00 - 5:01
    we're finding our
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    sideways
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    position.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    Close start,
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    turn to the side.
  • 5:06 - 5:07
The net is in front of me.
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    And then from there,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
we're gonna come a little bit behind the ball,
  • 5:12 - 5:14
just a little bit and to the side of it.
  • 5:14 - 5:14
    And again,
  • 5:14 - 5:15
    we're gonna start
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    where we did
  • 5:17 - 5:19
when we were doing the drop and catch drill,
  • 5:19 - 5:20
and now our racket is here
  • 5:21 - 5:23
with our two hands on the grip that I mentioned before.
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    So, from here,
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    we're gonna drop down
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    and swing through.
  • 5:29 - 5:31
So, now we're hitting the ball,
  • 5:32 - 5:32
    but again,
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    it's really
  • 5:33 - 5:36
ingraining the technique that we want.
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    So, we're starting a high,
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    and then we're dropping low
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    and then starting high again.
  • 5:41 - 5:46
Now this high to low to high swing is what we need to generate topspin on
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    the ball.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
So, getting this correct swing motion ingrained
  • 5:49 - 5:51
from an early start into your tennis,
  • 5:51 - 5:55
into your backhand will really help you to develop a good
  • 5:55 - 5:59
topspin backhand later on as you progress in your tennis journey.
  • 5:59 - 6:01
Make sure you take your time on these ones,
  • 6:01 - 6:01
    guys.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
So, it's really important you set up
  • 6:03 - 6:03
    right.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
So, I'm a little bit behind and to the side of the ball.
  • 6:07 - 6:08
    I'm finding
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    my racket here,
  • 6:09 - 6:11
so my strings are pointing to the side,
  • 6:11 - 6:13
a little bit of bend in my knee,
  • 6:13 - 6:14
    so I'm looking athletic.
  • 6:15 - 6:16
    And then I dropped down,
  • 6:19 - 6:19
    I'm finished high.
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    And I'm rotating
  • 6:22 - 6:24
forward so that my body is facing
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    the net as I finish.
  • 6:29 - 6:31
Now if you have a practice partner,
  • 6:31 - 6:32
you can play this game together,
  • 6:32 - 6:36
rolling the ball back and forth to each other along the court.
  • 6:36 - 6:39
And you can make it a little bit more challenging for each other,
  • 6:39 - 6:39
    so
  • 6:40 - 6:42
you can play games such as goalkeeping,
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    so then you're
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    working on your direction,
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    changing direction and hitting
  • 6:47 - 6:49
maybe more down the line or cross court
  • 6:50 - 6:50
    to
  • 6:50 - 6:52
get the ball past your opponent.
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    So, this
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    drill can be
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    adapted and progressed
  • 6:55 - 6:57
if you have a practice partner.
  • 6:57 - 6:58
Even if you're on your own,
  • 6:58 - 7:00
you can set targets out for yourself,
  • 7:01 - 7:01
    two cones,
  • 7:01 - 7:02
    for example.
  • 7:02 - 7:04
And you have to try and roll the ball between
  • 7:05 - 7:05
    those two cones.
  • 7:05 - 7:08
So, that's a really great drill to start to develop
  • 7:08 - 7:09
    hitting
  • 7:09 - 7:10
    in specific
  • 7:11 - 7:11
    directions,
  • 7:11 - 7:14
so changing the direction of the ball that you're hitting.
  • 7:14 - 7:15
    So guys,
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    once you've
  • 7:16 - 7:19
worked on that for maybe 5 to 10 minutes and you're feeling comfortable,
  • 7:20 - 7:24
you've progressed into changing the direction of where you were rolling the ball,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    then now you can start
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    in the ready position,
  • 7:29 - 7:30
    and then turn
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    and then roll.
  • 7:33 - 7:36
So, now we're gonna be looking a little bit more like a real backhand.
  • 7:37 - 7:40
So, we're in our ready position with our racket head above our grip level,
  • 7:40 - 7:42
    it's not down here.
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    It's nice and upright,
  • 7:43 - 7:44
a little bit of bend in our knees,
  • 7:44 - 7:45
    looking ready.
  • 7:45 - 7:47
And then from there we turn our shoulders,
  • 7:48 - 7:51
step forward with our dominant leg,
  • 7:51 - 7:53
so for me that's my right leg.
  • 7:53 - 7:56
And then we found our position that we were in
  • 7:56 - 7:57
    earlier,
  • 7:58 - 7:59
and from there you're gonna drop down
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    and hit.
  • 8:01 - 8:02
    Ready position,
  • 8:02 - 8:03
    turn the shoulders,
  • 8:04 - 8:04
    step forward,
  • 8:05 - 8:06
    and hit.
  • 8:06 - 8:06
    So
  • 8:06 - 8:07
    guys,
  • 8:07 - 8:07
    again,
  • 8:07 - 8:10
once you've done a few reps of those and you're feeling confident,
  • 8:10 - 8:11
    that you've got that swing,
  • 8:11 - 8:14
maybe even record yourself so you can see yourself on camera
  • 8:14 - 8:19
and compare it to myself to see if you're getting that correct motion.
  • 8:19 - 8:20
    Okay,
  • 8:20 - 8:22
so the next drill that we're going to do is
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    we're gonna hit left-handed forehand.
  • 8:25 - 8:25
    Now you might think,
  • 8:25 - 8:27
what are you talking about Gemma,
  • 8:27 - 8:30
we are trying to learn the double-handed backhand.
  • 8:30 - 8:30
    Well,
  • 8:30 - 8:31
    yes,
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    but in fact,
  • 8:32 - 8:37
the non-dominant hand on the double-handed backhand plays such a crucial role
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    in power production,
  • 8:39 - 8:40
    in control,
  • 8:40 - 8:41
    in accuracy
  • 8:41 - 8:42
    that learning
  • 8:43 - 8:45
    your non-dominant hand forehand
  • 8:45 - 8:46
    is actually really,
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    really important
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    to develop the double-handed backhand.
  • 8:49 - 8:53
So, your non-dominant hand plays such a crucial role in extending
  • 8:53 - 8:56
the racket coming into contact and extending
  • 8:56 - 8:58
the racket forward and through the ball.
  • 8:59 - 9:01
So, it's super important for the power of production
  • 9:01 - 9:04
and control and accuracy on the backhand side.
  • 9:05 - 9:06
    So, as I said earlier,
  • 9:06 - 9:07
    with your non-dominant hand,
  • 9:07 - 9:10
you're gonna use the eastern forehand grip and you're gonna choke
  • 9:10 - 9:11
    up the racket,
  • 9:11 - 9:12
    so where your
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    non-dominant hand would be
  • 9:14 - 9:15
    if you take
  • 9:15 - 9:17
    your dominant hand off.
  • 9:17 - 9:18
    Simple.
  • 9:19 - 9:19
    So from there,
  • 9:20 - 9:20
    again,
  • 9:20 - 9:22
like we were doing at the start,
  • 9:22 - 9:24
we're gonna have the ball in the dominant hand,
  • 9:25 - 9:25
    rack it
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    back here,
  • 9:27 - 9:27
    and again,
  • 9:28 - 9:29
    we're gonna drop to ourselves
  • 9:29 - 9:32
and come and hit a beautiful
  • 9:32 - 9:33
    left-handed forehand.
  • 9:34 - 9:35
Holding the grip quite nice and loose,
  • 9:36 - 9:36
    drop
  • 9:37 - 9:37
    and hit.
  • 9:38 - 9:39
    So, finding that timing,
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    finding that coordination
  • 9:42 - 9:44
of hitting that ball with your left hand.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
So, if you really try and feel
  • 9:46 - 9:47
    as you're doing this,
  • 9:47 - 9:48
    you're extending
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    through with that left hand.
  • 9:51 - 9:51
    Extend,
  • 9:52 - 9:52
    send,
  • 9:52 - 9:52
    send,
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    and up.
  • 9:53 - 9:54
    So, if you're a beginner,
  • 9:54 - 9:58
you don't need to try and put any topspin on this ball at all.
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    It's just about bouncing
  • 10:00 - 10:02
and hitting and finding that contact point
  • 10:02 - 10:04
nice and out in front of you and extending
  • 10:05 - 10:06
    all the way up
  • 10:06 - 10:08
    and across your shoulder.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
So, once you've done about 20 reps of that,
  • 10:12 - 10:16
then now you can move on to the last drill that I'm gonna show you.
  • 10:16 - 10:17
    Okay guys,
  • 10:17 - 10:19
so now we're actually gonna start hitting
  • 10:19 - 10:21
    double-handed backhands.
  • 10:21 - 10:23
If you don't have a partner to hit with,
  • 10:23 - 10:24
    don't worry at all,
  • 10:24 - 10:27
because I'm gonna show you what you can do if you don't have a partner,
  • 10:27 - 10:29
you can simply just drop the ball to yourself
  • 10:29 - 10:32
and hit backhands and really learn how
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    the swing mechanics work.
  • 10:34 - 10:37
You're gonna hold the ball in your non-dominant hand,
  • 10:38 - 10:39
    finding your
  • 10:40 - 10:41
chop a grip with your dominant hand,
  • 10:42 - 10:43
    and from there
  • 10:43 - 10:45
    you're gonna find this position,
  • 10:45 - 10:46
    the ready position,
  • 10:46 - 10:48
you're gonna bounce the ball in front
  • 10:49 - 10:49
    and hit.
  • 10:50 - 10:50
    So again,
  • 10:50 - 10:53
you're just gonna drop the ball to the side and in front of you
  • 10:53 - 10:54
    up,
  • 10:54 - 10:55
    rack it up
  • 10:55 - 10:56
    and hit.
  • 11:00 - 11:03
So, try to throw the ball up a little bit high so that you have enough time
  • 11:04 - 11:06
to put the hand onto the grip,
  • 11:06 - 11:07
    take the racket back,
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    drop and swing through.
  • 11:09 - 11:12
So, the key focus here is to find that back
  • 11:12 - 11:15
position that we've been finding in all the previous drills,
  • 11:15 - 11:16
    and from there
  • 11:16 - 11:18
you want to drop the racket
  • 11:18 - 11:19
    down,
  • 11:20 - 11:20
    low,
  • 11:21 - 11:23
    finding the contact point around
  • 11:23 - 11:25
    waist height
  • 11:25 - 11:26
in front and to the side of you.
  • 11:27 - 11:28
    And then from there,
  • 11:28 - 11:29
    you turn
  • 11:29 - 11:30
    and
  • 11:30 - 11:32
    finish over your shoulder.
  • 11:42 - 11:43
    So, with these shots,
  • 11:43 - 11:45
try and think about your net clearance.
  • 11:45 - 11:48
Try and think maybe about trying to generate some topspin,
  • 11:48 - 11:52
so getting low to high on the ball and brushing up the back of the ball.
  • 11:52 - 11:54
I know there are a lot of things to think about there,
  • 11:54 - 11:54
    guys,
  • 11:54 - 11:58
but if you go through each of these drills one by one and focus
  • 11:58 - 12:00
on each of the points that I've been saying,
  • 12:00 - 12:03
then slowly but surely you'll be able to progress
  • 12:03 - 12:03
    into
  • 12:04 - 12:05
    a really solid backhand
  • 12:06 - 12:08
that will help you to win more matches,
  • 12:08 - 12:12
and you won't feel like you have to rely only on your forehand side,
  • 12:13 - 12:16
you might even find that your backhand turns into a weapon for you.
  • 12:16 - 12:16
    So guys,
  • 12:17 - 12:18
that's the end of this video.
  • 12:18 - 12:19
I hope you really enjoyed it.
