The UnXplained: top 5 shocking mysteries of 2023 | Part 1
-
0:02 - 0:04Lovelock Nevada, 1911
-
0:06 - 0:10Inside a narrow cave, two miners
are searching for bat guano. -
0:11 - 0:14a key ingredient in making fertilizer.
-
0:16 - 0:21But as they head deeper into the darkness,
they make an unexpected discovery. -
0:24 - 0:27They find more than 40 human skeletons,
-
0:27 - 0:30some of which are abnormally large.
-
0:32 - 0:36In 1911 giant bones
were found in Lovelock cave. -
0:37 - 0:40Large human skulls and skeletons
-
0:40 - 0:44that measured
between 7 and 8 feet in height -
0:44 - 0:48which for ancient man
would have been rather significant. -
0:49 - 0:51This caused a sensation
-
0:51 - 0:55and one of the strange things
about the discoveries in Lovelock cave -
0:55 - 0:58is that the skeletons
were often found with red hair -
0:59 - 1:04and so it does seem like there are
a different kind of people -
1:04 - 1:07than the Native Americans from the area
-
1:07 - 1:10although many of the large bones
found in Lovelock cave -
1:10 - 1:13were unfortunately
lost a time for decades. -
1:14 - 1:18A number of skulls were preserved
at a local museum. -
1:19 - 1:21Until about 10 years ago,
-
1:21 - 1:25there were four very large skulls
on display inside the museum -
1:26 - 1:29and these were then removed
and ceremonially buried -
1:30 - 1:31Was also so interesting
-
1:31 - 1:36is that over 100,000 artifacts
were excavated from Lovelock cave. -
1:36 - 1:40The strange thing is that
many of the artifacts were huge -
1:40 - 1:42like you have giant sized sandals
-
1:42 - 1:48like a 15 inch long shoe
which is size 29 US -
1:48 - 1:52which would fit someone
who's about 9 feet tall. -
1:52 - 1:56And even pieces of clothing
which was so big, -
1:56 - 1:58looked as though they were worn by giants.
-
2:00 - 2:04The idea that giant bones
were actually found in a cave in Nevada -
2:04 - 2:07may sound far-fetched to some
-
2:07 - 2:12but the truth is that there were
many such discoveries reported -
2:12 - 2:14during the wild west.
-
2:14 - 2:16Even in the southwestern United States,
-
2:16 - 2:19there's several
very strange stories of these, -
2:19 - 2:24dead corpses or skeletons
being found regularly -
2:24 - 2:27in terms of the reports of giants.
-
2:27 - 2:29This is a compelling motif.
-
2:29 - 2:31People were fascinated
by the idea of a giant race -
2:31 - 2:33that had lived here previously
-
2:33 - 2:36and this connects
to a lot of biblical belief -
2:36 - 2:39that tended to be fairly literal back
in the day -
2:39 - 2:42and the Bible talks about back
when there was a race of giants -
2:42 - 2:44when there was a race of giants
that lived on the Earth -
2:44 - 2:47and so for many people in the wild west
-
2:47 - 2:50when you see some skeletons
dug out of the earth -
2:50 - 2:53that seem to corroborate this.
-
2:53 - 2:57This was an affirmation
of literal biblical beliefs as well -
2:57 - 3:02Is it really possible that a race
of giants once inhabited the old West? -
3:04 - 3:08As the numerous discoveries
reported throughout the 1800s suggest -
3:09 - 3:10and if so?
-
3:11 - 3:16Was evidence of these giants
recovered in Lovelock cave? -
3:18 - 3:20Perhaps a clue can be found
-
3:20 - 3:23by examining the history
of the indigenous Piute people -
3:23 - 3:27who have inhabited
the Nevada desert for centuries . -
3:28 - 3:33A woman named Sarah Winnemucca
who was a descendant of chief Winnemucca, -
3:33 - 3:36the Piutes, wrote a book in the 1800s
-
3:36 - 3:38and recounted her people's battle.
-
3:38 - 3:41with this race of giants
-
3:41 - 3:45Now, what's fascinating about this
-
3:45 - 3:48is that she says
that it was an actual battle -
3:48 - 3:51not part of tribal lore or mythology
-
3:51 - 3:54but something that actually occurred.
-
3:55 - 4:00The ??? were red-haired and lived
in the mountains near the Piute nation -
4:01 - 4:03and they were cannibals.
-
4:04 - 4:07According to the Piutes,
they naturally grew tired -
4:07 - 4:10of being cannibalized
-
4:10 - 4:12and they confronted these giants.
-
4:12 - 4:19A war was started between the giants
and the Piute people, for three years. -
4:19 - 4:21They battled one another.
-
4:21 - 4:24The last of the giants
holded themselves up -
4:24 - 4:27in the Lovelock cave
-
4:27 - 4:31and the Piute people stuff the openings
with a bunch of of brush and firewood -
4:31 - 4:34and lit the place on fire
-
4:36 - 4:40and that was the end
of the redhaired giant cannibals. -
4:43 - 4:44What's also interesting is that
-
4:45 - 4:48when the discovery was made
in 1911 at Lovelock cave -
4:48 - 4:52they also found evidence
of extreme burning -
4:52 - 4:55which took place near
the entrance to the cave -
4:55 - 4:58So, this matches the story
almost precisely -
4:59 - 5:02and again have evidence of red hair
-
5:02 - 5:04because Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins
-
5:04 - 5:07actually saved some of the hair
and sewed it into a morning dress -
5:07 - 5:10which she used when she gave lectures
-
5:10 - 5:14and so the story of the Piutes
defeating the giants. -
5:14 - 5:16then suddenly became a reality.
-
5:18 - 5:20For many the evidence in support
of the Piute story -
5:20 - 5:22about the redheaded giants
is compelling -
5:23 - 5:27not only because
of what was found in Lovelock cave -
5:28 - 5:32but also because there have been
reports of giant bones -
5:32 - 5:34being discovered in other places
-
5:34 - 5:37throughout the Western Nevada desert.
-
5:38 - 5:41If you go back
and look through the records -
5:41 - 5:45you can find numerous accounts of bones,
skeletons and giant sized artifacts -
5:45 - 5:48that been found in this area.
-
5:48 - 5:53In 1904 it was reported
that an 11 feet tall skeleton was found -
5:54 - 5:59and then we have accounts in 1931
of an 8 and 1/2 feet skeleton -
5:59 - 6:03that was reported and so the fact is
you have the stories, -
6:03 - 6:05you have the skeletal evidence
-
6:05 - 6:07and you have the artifacts
-
6:07 - 6:10And even the legends that proved
-
6:10 - 6:13this was a real story of giants
in this area. -
6:14 - 6:18To be sure the Piutes believe this to be
a historical truth. -
6:19 - 6:21People might dismiss him as just folklore
-
6:21 - 6:24but again who's to say
that it didn't happen? -
6:24 - 6:27Of course, there were ethnic conflicts,
of course there were wars -
6:27 - 6:29and of course people
tend to remember this. -
6:29 - 6:33So, this has been a real important part
of many people's historical beliefs -
6:33 - 6:36and how they think
about their own history. -
6:37 - 6:42Mecca, it is home to one of the world's
largest religious structures, -
6:42 - 6:44the Grand Mosque.
-
6:45 - 6:47In the center courtyard
of this immense edifice -
6:48 - 6:50stands a 43 foot tall granite Cube
-
6:50 - 6:54known as the Caaba, the house of God.
-
6:55 - 6:56Five times a day, every day,
-
6:56 - 6:59almost 2 billion Muslims across the world
-
7:00 - 7:04will turn and prey towards
this striking black monument, -
7:04 - 7:09the holiest and most sacred site
in all of Islam. -
7:09 - 7:14Why? Because embedded
in the Eastern corner of the shrine -
7:14 - 7:18is perhaps the most sacred stone
in all the world, -
7:18 - 7:21the Black Stone of Mecca.
-
7:24 - 7:29For the world's 1.8 billion Muslims,
this stone is crucial. -
7:30 - 7:32When Muslims face
in the direction of Mecca, -
7:32 - 7:35they face in the direction of that stone.
-
7:36 - 7:41This object, as simple as it might be,
-
7:41 - 7:46is of incredible significance
to the Muslim faith -
7:46 - 7:50because it is said to have fallen
from Heaven -
7:52 - 7:58at the commands of Allah
at the time of Adam and Eve -
7:59 - 8:05and it was was said to have marked
the position of the first temple -
8:05 - 8:08which obviously becomes Mecca itself.
-
8:11 - 8:14Then the story is that
that stone gets lost during the flood -
8:14 - 8:18because Muslims have the same flood story
that Jews do from the Hebrew Bible. -
8:18 - 8:22Then that stone for Muslims
is rediscovered by Abraham, -
8:22 - 8:28so Abraham with his son Ishmael
build in Mecca the first place of prayer. -
8:28 - 8:31That's why Mecca is important to Muslims,
-
8:31 - 8:34because this is the first place of prayer
to the one God. -
8:35 - 8:38Over time it gets worn away,
the building gets rebuilt. -
8:38 - 8:41In 605 the prophet Muhammad himself
-
8:41 - 8:44is the one that places
that stone in its place. -
8:44 - 8:47That's part of what gives it power.
-
8:48 - 8:54Each year millions of Muslims
make a pilgrimage or Hajj to the Kaaba. -
8:55 - 9:00Once there, visitors take part
in a series of rituals called Tawaf -
9:01 - 9:04which includes circling
the Kaaba seven times -
9:04 - 9:07in the belief that it will bring about
true humility -
9:07 - 9:10by linking them with God.
-
9:10 - 9:14The Black Stone is therefore
-
9:14 - 9:19one of the focal points
of the Hajj ceremony -
9:19 - 9:25that every Muslim certainly
tries to achieve during their lifetime -
9:25 - 9:30and they will then enter
the Central Court of Mecca -
9:30 - 9:34and, if possible,
try to kiss the Black Stone -
9:34 - 9:37in emulation of Muhammad
-
9:37 - 9:43who was said to have set it up
in this position in the year 605 AD. -
9:45 - 9:47Certainly the stories
that have been built around it -
9:47 - 9:49really pull people in
-
9:49 - 9:52and some people suggested that maybe
it's something in the stone itself -
9:52 - 9:54that pulls people in.
-
9:55 - 9:58The stone itself pulling people in?
-
9:58 - 10:03But how for the millions,
if not billions, of Muslims, -
10:04 - 10:06who have made their pilgrimage
to the Kaaba? -
10:07 - 10:12There's no doubt that the Black Stone
has an inexorable power -
10:13 - 10:15that seems to draw them into its orbit
-
10:16 - 10:18and, according to some experts,
-
10:18 - 10:22that's because the Black Stone
is not of this world. -
10:24 - 10:30Muslims believe that
this was sent down by God to Earth. -
10:32 - 10:35If we're scientific
we may call that a meteorite. -
10:35 - 10:38If we're not scientific,
we may call that miraculous. -
10:38 - 10:41Here's this stone that comes
from the heavens. -
10:41 - 10:44When a meteorite hits the Earth
and somebody witness it to fall -
10:44 - 10:46and they were to go to that location,
-
10:46 - 10:48there's a variety of things
that they might be able to find. -
10:49 - 10:51If the stone falls in a sandy area,
for example, -
10:51 - 10:55there might be a lot of heat
associated with the meteorite as it falls -
10:55 - 10:58and that could cause a fusion of the sand
-
10:58 - 11:00to cause some kind of glass to form.
-
11:00 - 11:02And so, when you walk up onto it
-
11:02 - 11:05you might find
some interesting new features -
11:05 - 11:07that you probably wouldn't have seen
-
11:07 - 11:09in that particular part
of the of the world before. -
11:12 - 11:16Meteorites arrive from outer space
being exposed to cosmic rays. -
11:16 - 11:23They're slightly radioactive to people
not exposed to electromagnetic radiation. -
11:23 - 11:27They would might have been able
to even feel that buzz from this rock, -
11:27 - 11:30from the radiation,
beta particles especially. -
11:31 - 11:33Whether you believe
it was sent by God -
11:33 - 11:35or whether you believe
it was a random act, -
11:35 - 11:37it has literally extraterrestrial origins
-
11:37 - 11:40and so that creates a real power there.
-
11:41 - 11:44Could the Black Stone of Mecca
really have the power -
11:44 - 11:47to physically affect people
who come near it? -
11:48 - 11:50Now, the truth is
we may never know for sure -
11:51 - 11:56because no one has ever been officially
allowed to inspect or analyze it. -
12:00 - 12:03So, there are a lot of exciting
and interesting questions -
12:03 - 12:04about the Black Stone.
-
12:04 - 12:06I think the first initial one is
-
12:06 - 12:07Is it actually a meteorite?
-
12:07 - 12:10A lot of people propose that
and there's some evidence, -
12:10 - 12:12particularly from a local impact trader,
-
12:12 - 12:13that it came from there
-
12:13 - 12:15and is there some sort of radiation energy
-
12:16 - 12:17that it emits or is coming from it
-
12:18 - 12:20that we just don't understand yet.
-
12:20 - 12:22So, it would be really amazing
-
12:22 - 12:24to have the opportunity
to analyze the Black Stone -
12:24 - 12:26There are obviously challenges,
-
12:26 - 12:29both sort of social as well as scientific.
-
12:29 - 12:32It's in the Muslim world,
it's in a very sacred place. -
12:32 - 12:34It's a very sacred stone.
-
12:34 - 12:37So, bringing in scientists
and doing careful analyses -
12:37 - 12:39have those social challenges
-
12:39 - 12:41and would be difficult.
-
12:43 - 12:45Tombstone, Arizona.
-
12:46 - 12:50The spirit of the Wild West
is alive and well in this small town -
12:51 - 12:53where a saloon doors still swing open
-
12:53 - 12:55and horses pull stage coaches
along main street. -
12:58 - 13:02Founded in the late 1800s
Tombstone embraces its history -
13:03 - 13:06when outlaws, gunslingers
and violent shootouts were all too common. -
13:09 - 13:11Tombstone was a silver broom town...
-
13:11 - 13:13but what makes Tombstone so legendary
-
13:13 - 13:16was well mostly
the Gunfight of the O.K. Corral. -
13:16 - 13:20That was between the Earps, the Clantons,
and McLauries and Billy Claiborne. -
13:20 - 13:23Also Doc Holliday
was involved in that gunfight. -
13:26 - 13:28Now, the gunfight was actually
-
13:28 - 13:31in the alleyway leading
into the O.K. Corral, on Freemont Street. -
13:37 - 13:39No one knows who fired the first shot.
-
13:41 - 13:43It was a 30 second gunfight.
-
13:43 - 13:4538 shots were fired
-
13:45 - 13:48and three men lay dead on the street.
-
13:49 - 13:51There's so much history around here.
-
13:51 - 13:53When you walk those streets in Tombstone,
-
13:55 - 13:57you're walking in the steps of History.
-
13:58 - 14:01The gunfight at the O.K. Corral
-
14:01 - 14:04is the most well-known tale
from this wild west boomtown. -
14:06 - 14:10But Tombstone past is also riddled
with bizarre supernatural stories, -
14:12 - 14:16including tales of strange creatures
roaming the frontier -
14:17 - 14:20that spread like wildfire
in the 19th century. -
14:20 - 14:23There are a lot of legends
that have come out of Tombstone. -
14:23 - 14:26but there's one very curious one.
-
14:26 - 14:29In 1890 the Tombstone Epitaph
-
14:29 - 14:33reported a story about two ranchers
-
14:33 - 14:36who saw a giant flying creature
in the sky above them. -
14:38 - 14:41Tombstone Epitaph reported
that they encountered -
14:41 - 14:43a prehistoric looking monster,flying,
-
14:44 - 14:46and they said the whole body
was about 100 feet long -
14:46 - 14:49and the head was about 8 feet long,
-
14:49 - 14:51loaded with razor sharp teeth.
-
14:53 - 14:55They not only were afraid of it
-
14:55 - 14:59but apparently they tracked it down
and killed this creature -
15:00 - 15:04and tried to take a photograph of it
sprawled out. -
15:05 - 15:09According to local lore, a photo
of the strange creature was indeed taken -
15:09 - 15:12and even published
in the Tombstone Epitaph -
15:12 - 15:17but locating the supposed picture
is proven to be difficult. -
15:18 - 15:21In terms of the photograph,
there are legions of people -
15:21 - 15:24who remember seeing this pictur
-
15:24 - 15:26even into the 1930s and 40s.
-
15:26 - 15:28Yet no one has ever been able to locate it
-
15:29 - 15:34and in fact the edition of the Epitaph
that the story ran in -
15:36 - 15:38didn't have any photographs at all.
-
15:39 - 15:41Although the alleged newspaper photo
has never been found, -
15:41 - 15:45over the years a number
of bizarre pictures -
15:45 - 15:49featuring cowboys
and a massive winged creature -
15:49 - 15:52have surfaced and can be seen
on the Internet. -
15:52 - 15:56One photograph depicts a group of men
-
15:56 - 15:59with a giant winged beast.
-
15:59 - 16:03That creature is winged
but it's not really a bird. -
16:03 - 16:08It looks more like a pterodactyl,
something prehistoric -
16:08 - 16:10with large leathery wings
-
16:10 - 16:13and a large head with two feet
hanging down below. -
16:14 - 16:19It adds to the mystery of the creature
and makes us wonder -
16:19 - 16:22what exactly is flying around
in the southern deserts. -
16:23 - 16:26While the images
of the wing creature are compelling -
16:26 - 16:29historians have questioned
their authenticity -
16:29 - 16:33and claim that
they may have been fabricated -
16:33 - 16:35as a result of the fascination people have
-
16:36 - 16:39with this strange tale
from the old West. -
16:40 - 16:43Although most variations of the photos
seem to be hoaxes, -
16:43 - 16:46I think it's weird when you combine
-
16:46 - 16:48all of the things
of the newspaper encounter -
16:48 - 16:52people swearing that they personally saw
the photograph -
16:52 - 16:54and now it's gone.
-
16:54 - 16:57It only adds more history and wonder
to the story -
16:57 - 16:59and I think in some regard,
-
16:59 - 17:02it makes it even bigger
than it would have been. -
17:02 - 17:06Is the story of the Tombstone pterodactyl
just a tall tale? -
17:07 - 17:11Or is it possible that there really was
a species of giant flying creatures -
17:11 - 17:14that roam the deserts of the old west?
-
17:16 - 17:19Perhaps the answer can be found
by examining accounts -
17:19 - 17:24from Native American folklore
of a creature known as the Thunderbird. -
17:25 - 17:30The Thunderbird is one of the most
widespread powerful creatures -
17:30 - 17:33and symbols in Native American mythology.
-
17:33 - 17:36It is a gigantic bird,
some kind of a raptor, -
17:36 - 17:39sometimes with somewhat human qualities
-
17:40 - 17:43but it's connected
with thunder and with lightning. -
17:43 - 17:46Very often, those flapping its wings
is what creates thunder. -
17:46 - 17:50It shoots lightning out of its eyes.
-
17:50 - 17:53The Thunderbird is common
in Native American tribes -
17:53 - 17:54all over the West.
-
17:55 - 17:57You'll find them on petroglyphs,
on the rocks , -
17:57 - 18:00or you'll find them in totem poles.
-
18:00 - 18:01It's a special bird,
-
18:01 - 18:06a special spiritual power
of protection and support and strength. -
18:06 - 18:08That's what the Thunderbird represents.
-
18:10 - 18:14By some accounts, Thunderbirds
were strictly spiritual beings. -
18:14 - 18:19They lived in another world
and they were frightening -
18:19 - 18:22but could also sometimes
lend their power to the people. -
18:23 - 18:28On other occasions, they were
perly real creatures -
18:28 - 18:30that could swoop down at any time
-
18:30 - 18:33and snatch up humans,
if they so choose. -
18:34 - 18:37Is it possible that there is a connection
-
18:37 - 18:39between the Thunderbird
and the winged creature -
18:39 - 18:44that was reportedly seen
near Tombstone, Arizona, in 1890? -
18:44 - 18:47For now, the answer is unclear
-
18:49 - 18:52but people remain fascinated by the idea
-
18:52 - 18:58that massive winged birds really
did soar over the American frontier. -
19:00 - 19:02It's important to remember
-
19:02 - 19:04that this is taking place in the wild West
-
19:04 - 19:06is taking place when people
are looking out for marvels -
19:06 - 19:10and becoming aware
of Native American explanations, -
19:10 - 19:12Native American mythology
at the same time. -
19:13 - 19:16So, people were aware that
the Thunderbird was held to be out there -
19:16 - 19:18which leads us back to the question,
-
19:18 - 19:21The Thunderbird is it encrypted
like it's out there somewhere? -
19:22 - 19:26Is it simply a deity that's sort
of cobbled together from abstract notions -
19:26 - 19:29of what the Divine is?
-
19:29 - 19:33Or is it sort of resulting from people
finding pterodactyl skeletons -
19:33 - 19:34and saying,
-
19:35 - 19:38Waw, there must have been
a great big bird here, at some point! -
19:38 - 19:40Or maybe all three.
-
19:40 - 19:42So, this is still a great mystery.
-
19:44 - 19:46Sardinia, 1974.
-
19:48 - 19:51On this island located
off the Sardinia coast of Italy, -
19:51 - 19:55a farmer in a region known as Mont'e Prama
-
19:55 - 19:57is tilling his fields,
-
19:57 - 20:00when he strikes
what appears to be a large rock. -
20:01 - 20:04But upon closer inspection, he realizes
-
20:04 - 20:06that his plow has revealed
something far more amazing. -
20:08 - 20:12It's the head of a massive ancient statue.
-
20:15 - 20:18The farmer started digging around it
brushing away the mud, -
20:18 - 20:21pulled it out and there was
this giant stone head -
20:21 - 20:25gazing back at him,
with these obsidian eyes. -
20:25 - 20:29And so this became
quite a sensation at the time. -
20:30 - 20:34It was one of the most important
archaeological discoveries of the decade. -
20:35 - 20:38Subsequently archaeologists
entered the area -
20:38 - 20:40and through the late 70s,
-
20:40 - 20:46they dug and they found over 5,000
fragments of these giant statues. -
20:47 - 20:52We have archers, we have warriors,
we have boxers. -
20:53 - 20:56They are generally speaking
about 8 feet tall -
20:56 - 20:59and approach a ton in weight
-
20:59 - 21:03and they are unique in the regard that
-
21:03 - 21:07for their time there was
no other statuary -
21:07 - 21:10that was in human form and size
-
21:11 - 21:15and that level
of detail and sophistication. -
21:16 - 21:20The monolithic statues came to be known
as the Giants of Mont'e Prama. -
21:22 - 21:27According to archaeologists,
they were carved by the Nuragic people, -
21:27 - 21:32a mysterious civilization that lived
on Sardinia nearly 4,000 years ago. -
21:34 - 21:39The Nuragic people were
the indigenous population of Sardini -
21:39 - 21:44beginning around 1750 BCE
-
21:44 - 21:49and they were not the kind of society
that would have writing. -
21:50 - 21:54So, we don't know a lot
beyond their everyday lifestyle -
21:54 - 21:57which would be in many ways similar
to what was going on -
21:57 - 22:00throughout the Mediterranean
at the same time. -
22:01 - 22:04Incredibly, some researchers claim
that the reason -
22:04 - 22:08why the Nuragic people carved statues
that were 8 feet tall -
22:08 - 22:17is because these monoliths were created
in the image of an actual race of giants. -
22:19 - 22:21One of the strange things
about these statues -
22:21 - 22:23is that they appear to be buried
-
22:23 - 22:28underneath these kind of slabs of stone
in this elongated grave -
22:28 - 22:32as though they were almost
like ancestors being buried in the ground. -
22:33 - 22:35Why they did this we don't know,
-
22:35 - 22:38but there are many legends of giants
all over Sardinia -
22:38 - 22:40and the stories go on, and on, and on,
-
22:40 - 22:44so this could be the same giants
who are memorialized -
22:44 - 22:46in these particular statues.
-
22:47 - 22:50Could the monoliths of Mont'e Prama
really be evidence -
22:50 - 22:54that a civilization of giants
once inhabited the island of Sardinia? -
22:54 - 22:56Yes, some believe.
-
22:58 - 23:00Many researchers think
that is possible -
23:00 - 23:04and claim that there are
additional clues in folklore -
23:05 - 23:07throughout the Mediterranean.
-
23:08 - 23:11Diodorus, an ancient Greek historian
-
23:11 - 23:13discussed how there was
-
23:13 - 23:15an ancient bloodline
of the Athenian civilization -
23:15 - 23:18known as the 50 sons of Hercules,
-
23:18 - 23:21that maided with a mortal race of women
to create a giant bloodline -
23:21 - 23:26that build these monolithic statues
on the island of Sardinia. -
23:26 - 23:30This story really put the idea
into different philosophers heads -
23:30 - 23:33that this was actually
a very advanced culture -
23:34 - 23:37that kind of led up to the time
of the Nuragic people -
23:39 - 23:42and culminated in the era
of the Mont'e Prama giants. -
23:45 - 23:49The massive monolith of Mont'e Prama
and stories from folklore -
23:49 - 23:52aren't the only pieces
of evidence to suggest -
23:53 - 23:56that giants once lived on Sardinia,
-
23:58 - 24:00because there are also
mysterious tombs -
24:00 - 24:03located throughout the island
-
24:03 - 24:07that may have been where
their oversized bodies were buried. -
24:10 - 24:14What we see at Mont'e Prama
are totally separate structures -
24:14 - 24:16for where they buried their deceased
-
24:16 - 24:20and these are called the giants tombs,
"tumbas de sos zigantes". -
24:21 - 24:25They are typically made
of one very large stone -
24:25 - 24:32that have a semi-hemisphere
spherical entry area or front -
24:32 - 24:38that curves inward with the center part
having a small hole down at the bottom -
24:39 - 24:42which is where the skeleton
would have been interred. -
24:43 - 24:45As you see these giants tombs
-
24:45 - 24:48what you realize is it's entirely made
of large blocks -
24:48 - 24:51with a small opening in the base.
-
24:52 - 24:55In tradition, these were
the burial places designed for giants. -
24:56 - 24:59They would actually
build the tomb around it. -
25:00 - 25:04This is one of the clues
that kind of links with the legends. -
25:04 - 25:06The giants did exist in Sardinia
-
25:06 - 25:10but there is further evidence
that actual skeletons have been found -
25:10 - 25:12in some of these giants graves.
-
25:13 - 25:16We have accounts from 1901
-
25:16 - 25:20where there's a report
of four 9-feet skeletons -
25:20 - 25:24being unearthed in the vicinity
in Northern Sardinia -
25:24 - 25:26and even relatively recently,
-
25:26 - 25:28there are reports
of three skeletons being dug up -
25:28 - 25:32in an area called Terralba
in Southwest Sardinia. -
25:33 - 25:37However the problem is that
most of the evidence is now disappeared. -
25:37 - 25:42They've just gone missing basically
and so you have to question: -
25:42 - 25:43Why is this?
-
25:43 - 25:45Is there a cover up?
-
25:46 - 25:51Is it possible that the bones of giants
have actually been hidden from the public? -
25:52 - 25:53It's an intriguing theory
-
25:54 - 25:56and it deepens the mystery
-
25:56 - 26:01surrounding the strange towering
statues uncovered at Mont'e Prama. -
26:03 - 26:07The giants of Mont'e Prama
are very unique and enigmatic -
26:07 - 26:14and Sardinia's myths and stories
about who these people were -
26:14 - 26:16typically talk about giants
-
26:16 - 26:20but there's a lot of things we don't know
about who these people were -
26:20 - 26:26and so these giant statues
are the mystery within that story. -
26:28 - 26:32San Juan, County Utah,
November 18th, 2020. -
26:34 - 26:37In the remote sandstone canyons
of the Utah desert, -
26:37 - 26:42a team of biologists tracking sheep
make a shocking discovery. -
26:43 - 26:49They come upon a gleaming
12 feet tall metal monolith. -
26:51 - 26:54It's just a completely unearthly image.
-
26:54 - 26:58It's this big triangular prism
about 12 feet tall, -
26:58 - 27:01firmly embedded in the desert ground
-
27:01 - 27:03in this incredibly remote place
-
27:03 - 27:06where there are no roads.
-
27:08 - 27:11It's very difficult
to get anything out there, -
27:11 - 27:15let alone a 12 feet tall slap of metal.
-
27:16 - 27:20But what's very weird about it
is using Google Earth satellite imagery, -
27:20 - 27:25they eventually figure out that
it has been there for 4 to 5 years -
27:25 - 27:27without being discovered.
-
27:27 - 27:31The sighting of this odd metal monolith
-
27:31 - 27:35looking like some kind
of otherworldly portal -
27:36 - 27:39was a ??? around the world.
-
27:39 - 27:41In some regards it was not a monolith
-
27:42 - 27:47because "lith" means stone
and this is a metal thing -
27:47 - 27:50but still it attracted everyone's eyes.
-
27:50 - 27:53I think part of it was the the mystery,
how did it get there? -
27:54 - 27:59Numerous theories were put forth
as to who might have created -
27:59 - 28:01the so-called Utah monolith.
-
28:02 - 28:06And then, during the following months,
the mystery took another twist -
28:07 - 28:12as similar monoliths started popping up
all over the world. -
28:13 - 28:18Other people became inspired
by this monolith in the Utah desert -
28:19 - 28:22and started copycatting from that
-
28:22 - 28:27and so another monolith appears in India.
-
28:27 - 28:30Shortly after that one
shows up in Italy, -
28:31 - 28:34you get one showing up in Pittsburgh,
-
28:34 - 28:36right outside of a candy shop.
-
28:36 - 28:40There's one that shows up in San Francisco
that is made out of gingerbread. -
28:41 - 28:45In the end, between November of 2020
and may of 2021, -
28:45 - 28:49over 200 monoliths around the world
just appear. -
28:51 - 28:53I guess this is the thing now, right?
-
28:53 - 28:56So, be prepared to see these everywhere.
-
28:57 - 29:01While some road off
the worldwide monolith phenomenon -
29:01 - 29:03as a cultural ???
-
29:03 - 29:05historians were quick to disagree
-
29:05 - 29:09and claimed that something
more profound was occurring -
29:10 - 29:13that dates back to the dawn of History,
-
29:16 - 29:19because curiously, about 6,000 years ago,
-
29:19 - 29:22upright stones known as menhirs
-
29:23 - 29:26that bear a striking resemblance
to the Utah monolith -
29:26 - 29:30were inexplicably erected all over Europe.
-
29:32 - 29:36When we look at this menhir phenomena,
-
29:36 - 29:39there's a time right around 4,000 BCE
-
29:39 - 29:43where these sites pop up all
over the place, at least in Europe. -
29:44 - 29:48The most well-known are the ones
that are in the UK -
29:49 - 29:53and in France in Portugal and Spain,
-
29:53 - 29:57but it's actually a much larger
and more expansive tradition. -
29:57 - 30:00They started creating these everywhere.
-
30:00 - 30:03In Germany we have the Wotan's stone
-
30:03 - 30:06and then, 400 miles away,
-
30:06 - 30:10one of the oldest stones is the menhir
of Grandson. -
30:11 - 30:18Overall in Europe there are
over 35,000 standing menhirs still today, -
30:19 - 30:22in almost every country.
-
30:23 - 30:27The number of ancient menhirs
located throughout Europe is staggering -
30:28 - 30:30and many historians have wondered,
-
30:31 - 30:35why were so many monoliths created
during the same time period? -
30:37 - 30:40Travel and trade had been standard
for thousands of years. -
30:41 - 30:44People are observant
and they like to remember -
30:44 - 30:48and replicate and interpret
and represent. -
30:48 - 30:54So, if somebody's traveled
to, say, Rudston, in East Yorkshire -
30:54 - 30:57and then they go back to Germany
-
30:57 - 31:02and they say, "I saw these amazing stones,
let's have a go at making them", -
31:03 - 31:07it's not impossible that people
may have just observed this -
31:07 - 31:09and then imitated it.
-
31:10 - 31:14Is it possible that the phenomenon
surrounding the Utah monolith -
31:15 - 31:18was actually history repeating itself?
-
31:19 - 31:22And that humans have actually
been imitating each other -
31:22 - 31:26by building monoliths
for thousands of years? -
31:28 - 31:33It's interesting that people don't want
to take credit in modern times -
31:33 - 31:35for creating these monuments
-
31:35 - 31:39and that may give us some insight
into the mentality of the people -
31:40 - 31:42that built ancient monoliths.
-
31:43 - 31:46They didn't carve their names in there
-
31:46 - 31:48and it perhaps was not about them either,
-
31:48 - 31:53it was about the human compunction
to make a piece of immortality.
