GERO 320 Summer 2024 - Quick Course Orientation

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    Hello, and welcome
    to summer term.
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    I'm creating some of
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    these quick instructional
    videos just to walk you
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    through things to expect
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    this summer in this
    particular course,
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    which is the
    introduction to aging,
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    a six-week online
    asynchronous course.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
Just to get us started here,
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    I'm going to show you
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    the Canvas course and walk
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    you through what to
    expect a little bit here.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    We'll go through the
    syllabus a bit as
  • 0:32 - 0:34
well. This is the home page.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    This is now live,
  • 0:36 - 0:40
    and you can find information
    here on the home page,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    just very general
    information such
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    as information about me.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
You can go to this link here and
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    see a little bit of
    information about me,
  • 0:50 - 0:55
    including contact information
    and my office hours.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
At any point, feel free to
    drop into this Zoom link.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    This will be my
    virtual office space,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    and I will be there
    Tuesdays from 9:00 A.M. to
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    noon and Wednesdays from
    10:00 A.M. to noon.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    Going back to the
    home page here.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    You will also find a
    link to the syllabus.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    I'm going to go over
    this here in a moment.
  • 1:16 - 1:21
You'll find a link to the
    textbook, which is required.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    It is available online
    through the library.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    Make sure you're logged
    into your Wolf Web account,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    and go ahead and click
on this link and you can
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    access the textbook that way.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    Then you will see modules
    listed down here.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    There are only six
    modules, one per week,
  • 1:40 - 1:44
and each one will be live at
    the beginning of the week.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    I'll just show you what
that looks like for Week 1,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    just to give you a
    little bit of an idea.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    Also up here, we have
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    some other modules that just
    have some helpful resources
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    and things that you can
  • 1:57 - 2:02
use if you feel like they
    will be helpful to you.
  • 2:02 - 2:07
    But Week 1, I have
    posted an overview page.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
This is always going to be
the case just to give you
  • 2:10 - 2:14
    a overview of what to
    expect for the week.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    We cover a lot of
    material each week,
  • 2:16 - 2:20
    and the term goes
    by really fast.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    It's important that you
stay on top of all of
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    your assignments and all of
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    your readings as
    much as possible,
  • 2:28 - 2:29
because it's very easy to get
  • 2:29 - 2:32
behind in a course like this.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    Just want to make
    sure that you are
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    as organized as possible.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    We've got some content
    here for you to explore.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    The focus for this
    first week is learning
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    just generally what
    is gerontology about.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    We're going to talk about
    the longevity dividend,
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    and how we can think
    about population aging in
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    a more positive way
    versus using a lot
  • 2:56 - 3:00
    of ageist stereotypes
    and attitudes.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    We're going to talk
    about ageism in
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    general and social
    theories of aging,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    and the science of aging,
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    so getting into,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    what are the mechanisms
    that underlie
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    the process of aging
    physiologically?
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    We will talk about some
    physical changes of aging,
  • 3:18 - 3:21
so some of the things that
    happen to us physically like
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    our skin wrinkling and
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    our hair turning gray,
    and things like that.
  • 3:25 - 3:29
    For each week you're going
    to find that you have
  • 3:29 - 3:31
a discussion forum as a way for
  • 3:31 - 3:33
you to engage with the material.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    This week is mostly a
    way for you to introduce
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    yourselves to each other
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    and get to know
    who's in the class.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    You also have a quiz.
  • 3:42 - 3:45
This will be a way for you to
    apply what you've learned,
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    and then an opportunity to
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    just reflect back on what
    you did for the week,
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    and make sure that you've
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    completed all of
    your assignments.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    We're going to go
    over to the syllabus.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
Again, you can access this from
  • 4:00 - 4:04
    the home page by clicking
    on this button here,
  • 4:04 - 4:10
or you can also access it
    by clicking on the panel.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
You can do a preview by
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    clicking here or you can
    download this document.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
We're going to go ahead and
    just do a preview here.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
    Again, this is a
    six-week course.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    It runs pretty quickly.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    I just have some
    information here at
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    the beginning about
    the description,
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    the required text, the goals.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    I'm not going to go
    through this in detail,
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    but if you have any
    questions whatsoever,
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    please feel free to reach
    out to me as needed.
  • 4:43 - 4:48
This is a course that fulfills
    a Gen Ed requirement,
  • 4:48 - 4:50
which is one of the really
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    positive things
    about this course.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    It also is one of
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    the requirements for the
    gerontology certificate.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    Whether you're thinking
    about a certificate
  • 4:59 - 5:02
or a minor, or a major,
  • 5:02 - 5:04
this is the best course to start
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    with because it
    really does give you
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    that foundational material that
  • 5:09 - 5:14
    you need for the
    gerontology curriculum.
  • 5:15 - 5:19
    I have some information here
    about how to communicate.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    Most information is going
    to go to your email.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    I do post announcements,
  • 5:24 - 5:25
and those should be also set up
  • 5:25 - 5:27
to go to your email inbox.
  • 5:27 - 5:29
Please just make sure to keep
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    track of any information
    that's coming to you.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    Again, it's easy to fall
behind in a course like this.
  • 5:35 - 5:39
I just want to make sure that
you are staying on top of
  • 5:39 - 5:44
    all of the information that
    I am communicating to you.
  • 5:44 - 5:49
    I'll be keeping track
    of your participation
  • 5:49 - 5:55
    through your engagement and
    your assignment submissions.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    If I do notice that
    you're falling behind,
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    I will likely be making
  • 5:59 - 6:04
    a referral to the student
    success in advising.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    Just keep that in mind.
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    I do want to make
    sure that you're able
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    to successfully
    complete the course.
  • 6:12 - 6:16
    My late policy essentially is,
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    I can't really accept
    late discussion posts,
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    quizzes, or exams.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    That being said, make
sure you reach out to me.
  • 6:24 - 6:27
A lot of times I can be
    flexible and re-open
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    an assignment and still
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    allow you to submit
    something if it's late.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    Papers, I generally will accept
  • 6:33 - 6:37
up to four days late with
    an automatic deduction
  • 6:37 - 6:42
    of 10% after the due
    date for each day.
  • 6:42 - 6:44
Again, reach out to me if
  • 6:44 - 6:46
you have any questions on that.
  • 6:46 - 6:47
    I've got some other information
  • 6:47 - 6:51
    here about some misconduct,
  • 6:51 - 6:56
    guidelines, mandatory
    reporting, accommodations.
  • 6:56 - 6:59
    A couple things I want
    to point out as well.
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    This is the grading
    scale that we use.
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    You'll notice like
    for assignments,
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    everything is still
    graded on this scale.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
At the end of the term,
  • 7:10 - 7:12
when you get your final grade,
  • 7:12 - 7:17
    if it is something
    that is below a 63%,
  • 7:17 - 7:19
    this is a new policy
    at the university,
  • 7:19 - 7:25
    it's actually going to be
reflected as NC or no credit,
  • 7:25 - 7:29
rather than a D- or an
    F as your final grade.
  • 7:29 - 7:34
This is just a way mostly
    to help students keep
  • 7:34 - 7:37
their GPA up so that if you are
  • 7:37 - 7:40
    getting something less
than a D in the course,
  • 7:40 - 7:43
it will just be a no credit
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    and will not impact
    your GPA ultimately.
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    You will need to retake
    the course if it's
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    a requirement, but hopefully,
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    this is a way that
    students can be
  • 7:53 - 7:57
    better supported in terms
    of their success overall.
  • 7:58 - 8:02
    Let me get to our
    assignments here.
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    As I said, every
    week you're going to
  • 8:04 - 8:08
    see opportunities for
    engaging and applying,
  • 8:08 - 8:12
so that we do those through
    discussions and quizzes.
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    Those are really just
    going to be through
  • 8:14 - 8:18
    Weeks 1 through 5.
  • 8:19 - 8:22
Week 6 is going to be a
    little bit different,
  • 8:22 - 8:26
    because that's when you're
    going to be focusing on
  • 8:26 - 8:30
    your final exam and pulling
    everything together.
  • 8:30 - 8:33
    Also your gerontology paper is
  • 8:33 - 8:37
    something that you'll be
    working on throughout the term.
  • 8:37 - 8:38
Just to give you a little
  • 8:38 - 8:40
    bit more information about this.
  • 8:40 - 8:44
    Again, after you explore
    the content each week,
  • 8:44 - 8:48
    you'll be engaging with
    your peers in discussion
  • 8:48 - 8:53
    and then applying your
    knowledge through quizzes.
  • 8:54 - 8:59
    I just realized I say
    Moodle here in my syllabus,
  • 8:59 - 9:03
    and I really should say
    Canvas, not Moodle.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
    The assignment that I
    mentioned is your paper.
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    You're going to be
    writing a research paper
  • 9:09 - 9:11
of a topic of your interest.
  • 9:11 - 9:15
    I will be providing some
    video instructions on that,
  • 9:15 - 9:17
    so you'll get more detail
  • 9:17 - 9:21
    here very soon about
    the gerontology paper.
  • 9:21 - 9:23
Then the only exam that you have
  • 9:23 - 9:25
in this course is your final.
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    It's going to be
    similar to the quizzes,
  • 9:27 - 9:29
but longer, and it will be
  • 9:29 - 9:32
    cumulative of
    everything you learned.
  • 9:32 - 9:35
    This is something that, again,
  • 9:35 - 9:36
    I will provide some more
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    detailed instructions
    so that you
  • 9:38 - 9:42
    feel more prepared as
    we get closer for that.
  • 9:42 - 9:45
    Of course, I have the
    outline here that just
  • 9:45 - 9:48
    shows what to expect
    for each week.
  • 9:48 - 9:51
    The dates of each week,
  • 9:51 - 9:56
    and also the topics that
    we're going to be covering.
  • 9:56 - 10:00
You'll see that each week we
    cover a variety of topics.
  • 10:00 - 10:05
    Again, it's a very
    quick condensed course.
  • 10:05 - 10:09
    Your paper will be due
at the end of Week 5,
  • 10:09 - 10:12
    so just make sure to
    be prepared for that.
  • 10:12 - 10:14
    Then like I said,
    your final exam
  • 10:14 - 10:17
    will be due at the
    end of Week 6.
  • 10:17 - 10:19
    That's going to be Friday,
  • 10:19 - 10:23
and you'll have all day to
    complete your final exam.
  • 10:24 - 10:26
That just gives you a little bit
  • 10:26 - 10:29
    of an overview of
    what to expect.
  • 10:29 - 10:33
    Again, the course moves fast.
  • 10:33 - 10:36
Make sure that you reach out
    if you've got questions.
  • 10:36 - 10:39
    I'm happy to answer
    questions as needed,
  • 10:39 - 10:42
    and I'm happy to
    meet with you during
  • 10:42 - 10:45
    office hours at any time.
  • 10:45 - 10:47
    Good luck, welcome to summer,
  • 10:47 - 10:50
and I hope you all are
    doing really well.
