I was sex trafficked for years. Brothels are hidden in plain sight

  • 0:11 - 0:13
    You noticed I'm holding q-cards.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    I'm holding q-cards
  • 0:15 - 0:18
because they are going to help me
    focus on my message
  • 0:18 - 0:22
    while at the same time,
    shielding me from painful memories,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    and intrusive thoughs,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    because my story
isn't an easy one to tell.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
In fact, every time I tell my story,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    I'm re-traumatized.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
But if sharing my story means
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    that one more girl
    has a chance of freedom,
  • 0:42 - 0:43
then it's worth it for me.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
Growing up in my family wasn't easy.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    Mental health problems and abuse
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    can destabilize a family.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
But, abuse doesn't just exist in a vacuum.
  • Not Synced
It doesn't just start or stop
    in one idividual's life,
  • Not Synced
    it permiates every action
    and activity of their being.
  • Not Synced
    Mental health problems
    and abuse led to neglect,
  • Not Synced
    and neglect left me
    on the streets of Scarborough,
  • Not Synced
    as a very young girl.
  • Not Synced
I distinctly recall going back to school.
  • Not Synced
    Remember each year
    the teacher would ask us?
  • Not Synced
"Write down what you did last summer."
  • Not Synced
I was so ashamed, I was paralised.
  • Not Synced
I didn't go to summer camp.
  • Not Synced
No, I didn't go to the cottage.
  • Not Synced
    I was the kid
that played outside all day long.
  • Not Synced
    There was no regular structure.
  • Not Synced
There was no routine for most anything.
  • Not Synced
One summer, I was raped by a stranger,
  • Not Synced
    and other, abuse integrated
    by the neigborhood boys.
  • Not Synced
I was always in fight or flight mode.
  • Not Synced
    It seemed like danger
    was lurking around every corner.
  • Not Synced
    What I learned that summer
  • Not Synced
    was how to remain hypervigilant,
    how to avoid attack,
  • Not Synced
    something that no young girl
    should ever have to learn.
  • Not Synced
    But it didn't stop
    with the neighborhood boys.
  • Not Synced
I would later be abused at the hands
    of multi generational pedofile.
  • Not Synced
And it was his words that kept me trapped.
  • Not Synced
    When he said,
  • Not Synced
your parents won't love you anymore
    if you tell on me.
  • Not Synced
    In my isolated environment
    I believed him.
  • Not Synced
And my behaivors started to reflect
the environment that I lived in.
  • Not Synced
I don't remember the time back then
  • Not Synced
when my boddy ever felt like my own.
  • Not Synced
At 17, I started moving from club to club.
  • Not Synced
    I first started stripping.
  • Not Synced
Then later, I worked for a smut magazine
  • Not Synced
    where I would meet
some of the most dangereous people
  • Not Synced
    I'd ever encountered.
  • Not Synced
Still, I was on this never ending quest
  • Not Synced
to have some form of agency
    over my own body,
  • Not Synced
a source of power I had never had before.
  • Not Synced
    One day, my phone rang,
  • Not Synced
I was looking at my gas gauge
    sitting on empty.
  • Not Synced
    It was my old co-worker
    from the magazine company.
  • Not Synced
He called me to tell me that
  • Not Synced
    he was running Toronto's
    largest massage parlour.
  • Not Synced
And he wanted me to come
    and join his stable.
  • Not Synced
    The word "stable"
  • Not Synced
    didn't even give me pause.
  • Not Synced
    Well, on the outside
it looked like a normal bussines
  • Not Synced
    except it wasn't.
  • Not Synced
This massage parlour had ten rooms
    and they were always busy.
  • Not Synced
There were between forty to sixty
women and girls on rotation in the spa.
  • Not Synced
A massage was between 40 and 50 dollars.
  • Not Synced
    We'd get a 10 dollar commission,
  • Not Synced
if you didn't have a fine.
  • Not Synced
And you could have a fine
    for just about anything,
  • Not Synced
    being late, talking back
or not having a perfectly primmed body.
  • Not Synced
It was expected that the girls
    could earn considerably more money
  • Not Synced
    by doing extras.
  • Not Synced
    And by doing extras,
  • Not Synced
I am talking about some of the
    most unimaginable and degrading acts.
  • Not Synced
Police raids? They occured in these places
  • Not Synced
but no police officer, no by law official
    ever offered me help.
  • Not Synced
No one ever said "Hey, is there
    somewhere else you'd rather be?"
  • Not Synced
or "I know somebody you can call.
  • Not Synced
    Can I connect you two?
  • Not Synced
And this would be my life
for the next nearly nine yaers.
  • Not Synced
Maybe you are listening to my story
  • Not Synced
    and you're thinking
    "how foolish is this girl!"
  • Not Synced
    But I wasn't foolish.
  • Not Synced
    I was vulnerable,
  • Not Synced
    I was naive,
  • Not Synced
and I was a perfect target.
  • Not Synced
    I didn't have a sense of belonging.
  • Not Synced
I didn't feel wanted or valued
for anything other than my body.
  • Not Synced
I had started to deceive myself,
  • Not Synced
this is my choice, I'm making this money.
  • Not Synced
    But in hindsight,
  • Not Synced
there wasn't my choice involved at all.
  • Not Synced
This wasn't work, it was trafficking.
  • Not Synced
I was told how to dress,
    who to have sex with
  • Not Synced
    where to live, everything.
  • Not Synced
I felt scared almost all the time.
  • Not Synced
    The man who recruited me
  • Not Synced
    he manipulated me into thinking,
believing that he was my protector,
  • Not Synced
    my boyfriend, except he wasn't.
  • Not Synced
He was my trafficker and I was
    little more than his property.
  • Not Synced
Over time, he made me a manager.
  • Not Synced
Made me. This was not an act of saving me.
  • Not Synced
    This was not a promotion.
  • Not Synced
This was him trying to build his status
    and grow his power.
  • Not Synced
On paper, he ran a licenced
    body rub parlour.
  • Not Synced
This allowed him to look like a
    legitimate bussinesman.
  • Not Synced
This licence allows you to rub
    need or stimulate
  • Not Synced
    any muscle in human body.
  • Not Synced
    Officially, these words don't mean
that sex is on the menu.
  • Not Synced
But in my experience, and thousands
    of others suggests differently.
  • Not Synced
Somewhere between the letter of law
  • Not Synced
    and the predatory practises of
    massage parlour owners and operators,
  • Not Synced
    the willingness for police
    to look the other way,
  • Not Synced
    our city has created
    a licenced brothel system.
  • Not Synced
A massage parlour keeps the schedule,
  • Not Synced
    manages all of the advertising,
  • Not Synced
and fields all of the calls,
  • Not Synced
    freeing up the trafficker
    to look for another victim.
  • Not Synced
    Buyers! They don't have to
    go to a seedy motel.
  • Not Synced
    Massage parlours an holistic centres
  • Not Synced
ones on the way to and from
    your home and work.
  • Not Synced
They provide a facada of acceptability
  • Not Synced
safety and option on a woman's part.
  • Not Synced
But even worse, the fact that
    all this happens
  • Not Synced

inside of a licenced system means that
  • Not Synced
we are enshrining a man's right
to buy a living breathing human being.
  • Not Synced
That's what we are talking about.
  • Not Synced
    This is what sex trafficking
    looks like in Canada.
  • Not Synced
It is the brothel hidden in plain sight
  • Not Synced
    where women are trapped
    and many enslaved.
  • Not Synced
    And here all of us,
  • Not Synced
all of us are deceived into believing that
  • Not Synced
    what's hapening is a woman's choice.
  • Not Synced
You see, our cities licence these parlours
  • Not Synced
    and holistic centres.
  • Not Synced
And in their point of view
  • Not Synced
    they're not officially granting
    a licence for a brothel,
  • Not Synced
but they are well aware of
    what's happening behind closed doors.
  • Not Synced
Not all massage centres are like this.
  • Not Synced
    No, legitimate owners,
they're not open until 4:00 am.
  • Not Synced
    They don't advertise their staff
    in scantily clad clothing
  • Not Synced
    on escort websites.
  • Not Synced
    So, how these massage parlours,
how are they able to thrive?
  • Not Synced
    Here in Canada, each municipality
  • Not Synced
    has the power and control
to grant the licences for their area.
  • Not Synced
    The higher levels of government,
    they know these problems exist,
  • Not Synced
    yet they take no responsibility
  • Not Synced
by saying they don't make the decisions,
  • Not Synced
    the municipalities do.
  • Not Synced
Even one of our more celebrated
    and successful politicians
  • Not Synced
was found inside a massage parlour
with no negative impacts to his career.
  • Not Synced
    It's as if we're saying
    "we're ok with this.
  • Not Synced
But I refuse to believe that,
    I just simply don't.
  • Not Synced
I was in a meeting with the most
    high senior officials
  • Not Synced
    from the municipal licencing.
  • Not Synced
    I specifically asked,
  • Not Synced
I said "You guys know that
    it isn't just massage, right?"
  • Not Synced
Their response "Yeah, we know that
these are just fronts for brothels."
  • Not Synced
    Everyone knows about this proplem,
  • Not Synced
yet no one is taking the lead to solve it.
  • Not Synced
    I eventually escaped
    from my circumstanes.
  • Not Synced
I literally slept for three days straight.
  • Not Synced
It was my soul that hurt
    where there was no hospital.
  • Not Synced
    Discovering my faih
    in a supportive community
  • Not Synced
    guided me to seek counselling
where my journey to recovery began.
  • Not Synced
Because you see, getting out is one thing
  • Not Synced
but staying out, that's just as hard.
  • Not Synced
    With this understanding,
    I started BridgeNorth.
  • Not Synced
I want to be a part of solution.
  • Not Synced
    I want to help end
    sex trafficking in Canada.
  • Not Synced
    We offer services to women.
  • Not Synced
They'll contact us for peer mentorship
    and support,
  • Not Synced
    medical care, food assistances,
    many other services as well.
  • Not Synced
    We also provide ..
  • Not Synced
    Sorry, we also provide
    a pulic education,
  • Not Synced
and we advocate to change our laws,
  • Not Synced
    because this problem is still
    so hidden in plain sight.
  • Not Synced
    There really are more victims
    than you think there are.
Title:
I was sex trafficked for years. Brothels are hidden in plain sight
Description:

Sex trafficking may be happening behind the walls of businesses you pass daily - including the some of the massage parlours and holistic centres in your community. Casandra Diamond shares a harrowing story of her experience inside these modern day brothels: in this raw and honest talk, learn about the systemic issues that enable businesses to operate in plain sight and how you can help to advocate for change. Casandra is the founding director of BridgeNorth, a survivor-led charitable organization that provides programs to assist victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Her work includes investing in public education, awareness, and advocacy at all levels of government including supporting Bill C-36 which is now law as the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
