14 desk setup upgrades that ACTUALLY matter

  • 0:00 - 0:02
Because I primarily work from a desk
  • 0:02 - 0:03
    pretty much every single day,
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    sometimes spending
up to 12 hours at my desk,
  • 0:05 - 0:07
depending on what I'm working on.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    I've spent over ten years
  • 0:09 - 0:10
    creating different desk setups,
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    refining and adjusting continually
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    to create the most ergonomic
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    and comfortable desk setup.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
So I like to think I know a thing or two
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    about what it takes
to make a great desk setup.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
In this video, I wanted to cover various
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    different desk setup upgrades
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    one should consider
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    when creating their own setup.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
I want to make it clear though,
  • 0:27 - 0:28
that you don't have to buy
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    every single thing
  • 0:29 - 0:31
that I am mentioning in this video.
  • 0:31 - 0:31
    I just wanted to make
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    some recommendations.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
You can choose whatever you like
  • 0:34 - 0:36
based on your budget and your preferences.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    First up is of course
  • 0:37 - 0:39
the main centrepiece of the setup,
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    and that's the desk.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
One major and very important factor
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    that everyone needs to consider
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    when purchasing a desk
  • 0:45 - 0:47
is not actually the width of the desk,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    but they should be considering
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    the depth of the desk.
  • 0:50 - 0:50
    So this is something
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    I learned the hard way.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
If your arms don't have support,
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    your elbows don't have support,
  • 0:54 - 0:55
and they're kind of just floating
  • 0:55 - 0:58
whilst you're using your keyboard or mouse
  • 0:58 - 1:00
that can actually result in aching pains
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    in your trapezius muscles,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
the muscles that are here and here.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
And you definitely don't want that.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
So it's really important to consider a desk
  • 1:06 - 1:08
that is deep enough to rest your arms on.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    Another solution to that
    is to have armrests.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
So if your chair has adjustable armrests,
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    making the armrests
  • 1:14 - 1:15
the same height as your desk
  • 1:15 - 1:17
can also make a big difference.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
The desk I have here is from Vernal,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
who are also sponsoring this video.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
This is one from their new solid wood range,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
which is made from real walnut.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
It looks and feels absolutely incredible.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
I'm personally a huge fan of Walnut.
  • 1:30 - 1:30
I love the way it looks,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
I love the way it feels.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
It's a very premium and luxurious wood.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
Great way to add some warmth to a setup.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
I have the large one here,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    which is 180 centimetres wide
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    and 75 centimetres deep.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
The depth of this desk is perfect
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    as it has enough space
for my arms, keyboard and mouse,
  • 1:46 - 1:48
whilst also being able to easily fit
  • 1:48 - 1:51
a large 32 inch monitor and a desk shelf.
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    It also has standing functionality
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    with three different memory settings,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
has a built-in cable management tray,
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    making it easy to store
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    and hide away cables.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
My cable management isn't the neatest,
  • 2:00 - 2:00
    but it works.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
I also have this matching desk shelf,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
which I'll cover later on in the video.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
Make sure to check out Vernal.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
I'll leave a link to this desk
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    in the description below.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
If you can, I would also recommend
  • 2:09 - 2:11
putting your desk in front of a window
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    or near a window.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    I'm not sure where
    this notion has come from,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
that putting your desk in front of a window
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    is a bad thing.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    I actually think
    it's completely the opposite.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
I actually think having your desk
  • 2:20 - 2:21
in front of a window is a good thing.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
I get a lot of natural sunlight coming in,
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    which is of course,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    great for my mental well-being.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    But at the same time,
  • 2:26 - 2:29
your eyes are then also more likely to focus
  • 2:29 - 2:32
on things farther away than your monitor
  • 2:32 - 2:33
or the wall behind your monitor,
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    which is very important
  • 2:34 - 2:36
because then that can help combat myopia.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    So myopia is something
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    I actually had previously,
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    and myopia is essentially nearsightedness.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
It's when your eyes find it difficult
  • 2:44 - 2:46
to focus on things farther away.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
And one of the causes of myopia
  • 2:48 - 2:50
is looking at things close to you,
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    like your monitor.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    If your eyes aren't regularly
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    focusing on things further away
  • 2:54 - 2:56
and you're not getting natural sunlight
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    in your eyes,
  • 2:57 - 2:58
that can very much speed up
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    the process of myopia
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    causing you to have nearsightedness.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    Because I had myopia,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
the only way to fix it is to wear glasses.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    Now you can see
I'm not wearing glasses right now,
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    but I did used to
  • 3:08 - 3:11
because I have had laser eye surgery.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
Whether you should have laser eye surgery
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    is really down to you,
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    but it's been an absolute
    game changer for me.
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    Next up is the chair.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    So even though it's not
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    the centrepiece of the setup,
  • 3:18 - 3:21
it's probably the most important part
  • 3:21 - 3:23
because it's what you're going to be sitting in
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    for hours on end.
  • 3:24 - 3:25
Please do not make the mistake
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    of getting a gaming chair.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    Gaming chairs really
  • 3:28 - 3:29
do not make any sense to me.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
They are not designed to be ergonomic.
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    They're not going
to be good for your back.
  • 3:33 - 3:34
They might be comfortable at first
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    and they may be fun
at first when you get it.
  • 3:36 - 3:37
But five, ten years down the line,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
when you're sitting in a chair like that
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    for hours every single day,
  • 3:41 - 3:42
it's just not going to be good
  • 3:42 - 3:44
for your back in the future.
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    Also, they're super ugly.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
I feel like they also look a bit childish
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    and they're, well, overpriced.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    Please avoid gaming chairs.
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    The chair I have here
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    is the Herman Miller Aeron.
  • 3:53 - 3:54
This is by far and away
  • 3:54 - 3:56
the most ergonomic chair you can buy.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    It's absolutely incredible.
  • 3:58 - 3:59
What makes this chair so good
  • 3:59 - 4:01
is the amount of adjustability it has.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
You get the standard height adjustments
  • 4:03 - 4:03
    like any other chair,
  • 4:03 - 4:05
but you also adjust the armrests,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    the tension of the backrest,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    and much, much more.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
When adjusted to you and your weight,
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    it should almost feel effortless
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    sitting in the chair.
  • 4:13 - 4:14
Now this chair is not cheap,
  • 4:14 - 4:17
it does retail new for around $1,000,
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    but a small little hack,
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    which I would very recommend,
  • 4:20 - 4:22
is looking on your local marketplace
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    like Facebook Marketplace
  • 4:23 - 4:25
or any other sort of classified ads,
  • 4:25 - 4:27
and looking for Herman Miller Aeron chairs.
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    You will find them
  • 4:29 - 4:31
for essentially half the price or less
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    because offices are usually
    just giving them away,
  • 4:33 - 4:35
just trying to get rid of them.
  • 4:35 - 4:37
I would highly recommend getting a used one
  • 4:37 - 4:38
because they are built to last.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    They will last like 10,
    15, 20 year no problem.
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    Once you have a chair,
  • 4:41 - 4:43
it's important to then get the settings right.
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    You need to make sure
  • 4:44 - 4:45
that when you're sitting in the chair,
  • 4:45 - 4:47
your feet can sit flat on the floor
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    and your knees are roughly
  • 4:49 - 4:50
    at a right angle.
  • 4:50 - 4:51
And then if your desk isn't
  • 4:51 - 4:52
deep enough to rest your arms,
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    you need to make sure
    the armrests on the chair
  • 4:54 - 4:56
are at the same level as the desk.
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    Next up is a monitor.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    So monitors are naturally
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    very highly preference based.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    Everyone will have different requirements
  • 5:02 - 5:04
and different expectations of a monitor.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
Some people like myself will be fine
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    with one monitor,
  • 5:06 - 5:08
whilst others will need multiple monitors.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
Some people might not even need a monitor
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    and they are completely okay
    with just a laptop.
  • 5:12 - 5:13
We're at this weird stage right now
  • 5:13 - 5:15
where there isn't really one monitor
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    that's exceptionally good.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
One monitor that's great for everything.
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    Now you can get monitors
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    that are genuinely good enough.
  • 5:21 - 5:23
But I think, like I said,
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    everyone's requirements,
  • 5:24 - 5:26
everyone's expectation is gonna be different.
  • 5:26 - 5:27
So it really comes down to
  • 5:27 - 5:29
what you expect from a monitor.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
For example, the monitor I have here
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    is the Pro Display XDR,
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    it's 6K resolution,
  • 5:33 - 5:35
super bright, and 32 inches in size.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
However, it would be terrible for gaming
  • 5:38 - 5:40
due to it only being 60 Hz refresh rate,
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    and it's not OLED.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
But then you have OLED monitors
  • 5:43 - 5:45
that come in a variety of different sizes,
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    resolutions, refresh rates.
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    Yet because they're OLED,
  • 5:48 - 5:50
it's not as bright as a Mini LED monitor.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    So, in bright rooms,
they're not going to be that great.
  • 5:53 - 5:54
I did make a video last year
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    called The One Monitor Setup,
  • 5:56 - 5:57
    where I covered the monitor
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    that's nearly good for everything.
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    It's far from perfect,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
but it does cover most people's needs.
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    But what I would recommend
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    is getting a monitor stand
  • 6:05 - 6:07
or an arm that gives you flexibility.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
The monitor stand for my display
  • 6:09 - 6:10
    offers a ton of adjustability,
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    including height and tilt.
  • 6:12 - 6:16
    And high-end monitor arms
    can offer even more flexibility.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
The aim is to get the monitor at a level
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    where you're not angling
  • 6:20 - 6:22
your head too low or too high
  • 6:22 - 6:24
so your neck is ideally straight.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    I also like to regularly
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    keep my desktop looking fresh,
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    so I change wallpapers regularly.
  • 6:29 - 6:31
I have a bunch of my own wallpaper packs,
  • 6:31 - 6:33
make sure to check them out.
  • 6:33 - 6:33
I'll leave a link to them
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    down in the description below.
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    On my desk,
  • 6:36 - 6:37
I also have a desk shelf
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    which can be used
to raise the monitor even further.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
However, I use my desk shelf to mainly organise
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    my other accessories
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    and to raise my speakers.
  • 6:45 - 6:47
This desk shelf is also from Vernal,
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    and made from solid walnut.
  • 6:49 - 6:50
I found that having something like this
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    helps me organise my accessories
  • 6:52 - 6:54
as well as hide things away.
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    There's a useful tray
  • 6:55 - 6:57
to put things like my external SSD,
  • 6:57 - 6:59
and because the desk shelf also raises
  • 6:59 - 7:01
the speakers to be closer to my ears,
  • 7:01 - 7:03
it helps with sound quality a lot.
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    Same with the speaker wedges,
  • 7:05 - 7:06
so they're angled at my ears.
  • 7:06 - 7:07
    If you do work alone,
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    I would highly recommend
  • 7:08 - 7:09
    a pair of desktop speakers.
  • 7:09 - 7:13
    I specifically have
    the Audioengine A2+ speakers.
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    These speakers are genuinely fantastic
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    and they sound incredible
  • 7:16 - 7:17
    when paired with a subwoofer.
  • 7:17 - 7:19
They have such a wide range
  • 7:19 - 7:20
depending on what I'm listening to,
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    they can sound super sharp
  • 7:22 - 7:23
and tactile or smooth and warm.
  • 7:23 - 7:24
    I'm no audiophine,
  • 7:24 - 7:27
but I definitely do appreciate good sound quality.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
I feel like a dedicated speakers
  • 7:29 - 7:30
    or headphones,
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    if that's what you're into,
  • 7:31 - 7:32
it's always going to be much better
  • 7:32 - 7:34
than the built-in speakers in a monitor.
  • 7:34 - 7:35
If you do video calls often,
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    a webcam is a must.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    Most monitors do not have
    a webcam built-in.
  • 7:40 - 7:42
I have this Insta360 Link webcam
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    that is a great quality.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    It's a great step up
    from a standard MacBook webcam.
  • 7:46 - 7:47
This is actually the older model.
  • 7:47 - 7:49
They now have the new Insta360 Link 2,
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    which is even better.
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    But this camera is awesome.
  • 7:52 - 7:53
It can follow me around if I move
  • 7:53 - 7:55
and can do a bunch of other cool stuff.
  • 7:55 - 7:56
    If you have a laptop,
  • 7:56 - 7:59
    regardless of if it's connected
    to a monitor or not,
  • 7:59 - 8:00
    I would highly recommend
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    an adjustable laptop stand.
  • 8:02 - 8:04
The one I have here is from Native Union.
  • 8:04 - 8:05
It lets me adjust the height
  • 8:05 - 8:07
    and angle of the laptop.
  • 8:07 - 8:09
    It's solid, made from aluminium.
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    It's the ideal way
  • 8:10 - 8:12
to raise your laptop to eye level
  • 8:12 - 8:13
    so you're not having
  • 8:13 - 8:14
to bend your neck down to look at it.
  • 8:14 - 8:16
    Now on to some
    other great small additions.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
I would highly recommend a mouse pad.
  • 8:18 - 8:20
I have this full grain leather one from ULX.
  • 8:20 - 8:22
It's a good way to add
some nice texture to the desk
  • 8:22 - 8:23
    whilst also protecting it
  • 8:23 - 8:25
from my mouse scratching up the desk.
  • 8:25 - 8:27
Keyboard and mouse are very preference-based.
  • 8:27 - 8:29
So I don't think there's really a right or wrong
  • 8:29 - 8:30
    keyboard or mouse to use.
  • 8:30 - 8:32
I personally use the Magic Keyboard
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    and the Magic Mouse,
  • 8:33 - 8:35
which isn't known to be ergonomic at all,
  • 8:35 - 8:37
but I find the Magic Mouse amazing.
  • 8:37 - 8:38
I feel like it's the best mouse.
  • 8:38 - 8:40
I've been using it for over ten years now,
  • 8:40 - 8:41
    I've not had any issues,
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    but I can completely understand
  • 8:43 - 8:45
why other people do not find it ergonomic.
  • 8:45 - 8:47
For most people I would highly recommend
  • 8:47 - 8:48
    the MX Master 3S,
  • 8:48 - 8:50
which has a ton of functionality
  • 8:50 - 8:52
and will be much more comfortable.
  • 8:52 - 8:53
    If you have wrist issues,
  • 8:53 - 8:54
    I would also recommend
  • 8:54 - 8:55
    checking out the Logi Lift,
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    which completely changes
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    the angle of your hand,
  • 8:58 - 9:00
keeping it in a more natural position.
  • 9:00 - 9:02
If you have a laptop and a monitor setup,
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    and need a bunch
    of additional ports for connectivity,
  • 9:04 - 9:06
I'd also recommend an external dock.
  • 9:06 - 9:08
I have this CalDigit one that lets me
  • 9:08 - 9:10
connect my laptop and monitor to it.
  • 9:10 - 9:10
    I can
  • 9:10 - 9:12
then connect a bunch of accessories to it
  • 9:12 - 9:14
as it gives me a ton more USB ports
  • 9:14 - 9:16
as well as some other useful ports.
  • 9:16 - 9:17
    I would also recommend
  • 9:17 - 9:18
    some sort of desktop charger
  • 9:18 - 9:20
for your phone and other accessories.
  • 9:20 - 9:21
    I have this desk charger
  • 9:21 - 9:22
that can charge my phone, Apple
  • 9:22 - 9:24
Watch and AirPods all at once.
  • 9:24 - 9:26
Not only is it useful, but it's also
  • 9:26 - 9:27
a very premium piece of tech.
  • 9:27 - 9:29
It has a weight to it
  • 9:29 - 9:31
and the materials it's made from fill.
  • 9:31 - 9:31
    Incredible.
  • 9:31 - 9:32
    It looks very classy.
  • 9:32 - 9:34
And if you regularly work into the dock,
  • 9:34 - 9:35
    then of course
  • 9:35 - 9:37
a desk lamp can be very useful.
  • 9:37 - 9:37
    Again,
  • 9:37 - 9:38
    whatever you choose here
  • 9:38 - 9:39
    is purely preference based.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
I have the Logitech Lightship Beam
  • 9:41 - 9:43
    Alexa, which is technically
  • 9:43 - 9:44
    a light made
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    for lighting your face
  • 9:45 - 9:47
when you're streaming, but I also find it
  • 9:47 - 9:48
very good as a desk lamp.
  • 9:48 - 9:50
So for me it's dual purpose.
  • 9:50 - 9:51
    You can adjust the brightness
  • 9:51 - 9:53
and colour temp on one side
  • 9:53 - 9:55
and the other side it changes colours
  • 9:55 - 9:55
    so you can set it
  • 9:55 - 9:57
to pretty much any colour you like.
  • 9:57 - 9:58
If you like you'd a compliment.
  • 9:58 - 9:59
    So those are just
  • 9:59 - 10:00
    some of the desk upgrades
  • 10:00 - 10:01
    I would recommend all.
  • 10:01 - 10:02
    Of course,
  • 10:02 - 10:02
    live links
  • 10:02 - 10:03
    to everything down
  • 10:03 - 10:05
    in the description below.
  • 10:05 - 10:05
    If you guys
  • 10:05 - 10:06
    have any other recommendations,
  • 10:06 - 10:07
please leave them in the comments.
  • 10:07 - 10:09
    I'm always interested to hear
  • 10:09 - 10:11
    what other people would recommend
  • 10:11 - 10:13
in making their setup more comfortable.
  • 10:13 - 10:14
    Hopefully you guys enjoyed it.
