Number sense and place value reasoning | 4th grade math (Illustrative Math-aligned) | Khan Academy

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    - [Tutor] We're told, "The list below
  • 0:02 - 0:04
shows 3 clues about a number,"
  • 0:04 - 0:05
and they say, "Which of these numbers
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    could be the number described?"
  • 0:06 - 0:07
So why don't you pause this video,
  • 0:07 - 0:10
and try to do this before
    we do this together?
  • 0:10 - 0:12
Okay, now let's do this together.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
So the first clue is the
    number is greater than 43,215.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
So let's see which of these
    numbers are greater than 43,215.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
So they all have four 10 thousands,
  • 0:22 - 0:23
so that doesn't help us much.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
But if we go to the thousands place,
  • 0:25 - 0:27
this one only has two thousands,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    so it's not greater, this
    is 42,000 and something,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    so it's definitely less
    than 43,000 and something.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
So we can rule this one out,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
just phrase it on that first clue.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    Now these second two, this
    is 45,000 and something,
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    and 46,000 and something,
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    so it's definitely larger
    than 43,000 and something.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
So we've used that first clue,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
we have it down now to two numbers.
  • 0:47 - 0:52
    The second clue, the
    number is less than 47,890.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    Well, both of these,
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    this is 45,000 and something,
    this is 46,000 and something,
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    so they're both less than
    47,000 and something,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
so this isn't really helping us that much.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
Now let's look at this last clue.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    The number has a six
    in the hundreds place.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    So the hundreds place, this
    is one, tens, hundreds,
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    six in the hundreds
    place, I like Choice B,
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    ones tens, hundreds,
  • 1:17 - 1:19
this does not have a six
    in the hundreds place,
  • 1:19 - 1:23
we rule that one out, and B is our answer.
