Guitar Technique: Minimum Movement Exercise (Guitar Lesson TE-004)
-
0:05 - 0:08Hey, how ya doing?
Justin here today. -
0:08 - 0:09I'm gonna share with you
an awesome little exercise -
0:09 - 0:11called "Minimum Movement".
-
0:11 - 0:15It's a small idea with big consequences, this one.
-
0:15 - 0:17Uh, we're gonna be using the G major scale.
-
0:17 - 0:19Doesn't really matter what scale you use.
-
0:19 - 0:22This is just a good one because
it's using all of your fingers. -
0:22 - 0:24Um, but you could use
another scale if you like. -
0:24 - 0:29Um, and the idea here really, it's all just
about learning to control your fingers. -
0:29 - 0:32I'm gonna talk about it a little bit
more after I've given you the close up -
0:32 - 0:33and the proper example of it.
-
0:33 - 0:34But, uh, let's get to our close up
-
0:34 - 0:38and, uh, check out actually
how to do this exercise. -
0:38 - 0:41Let me start by playing
you the G major scale -
0:41 - 0:44the one way I most commonly see it
if I ask a student to play me the scale. -
0:44 - 0:46So, it might look something like this.
-
0:46 - 0:53'playing'
-
0:53 - 0:55Okay? Now let me play it another way
-
0:55 - 0:57and see if you can spot the difference
-
0:57 - 1:03'playing'
-
1:03 - 1:04Looks pretty different, doesn't it?
-
1:04 - 1:15'playing'
-
1:15 - 1:17So the difference is
that my fingers are under control. -
1:17 - 1:20I call it "Flying Fingers" when
people's fingers, you know -
1:20 - 1:22particularly little fingers,
for a lot of people they really -
1:22 - 1:25want to fly right off the neck
as soon as they finish playing the note. -
1:25 - 1:27Whee! Off goes little finger.
-
1:27 - 1:30So, what you want to do with this exercise is
-
1:30 - 1:39play the G major scale really slowly
and try not to let any finger move more
than a millimeter or two from the fingerboard. -
1:39 - 1:42Right? Doesn't sound like that difficult a thing
but when you try it you're gonna find it is. -
1:42 - 1:47So, first note. Now, let's just
put the little finger down. -
1:47 - 1:51There we go, now first finger's
actually already kind of in place. -
1:51 - 1:55Now second finger has just got
to move over there, there we go. -
1:55 - 1:58Little finger, now don't let it
move up, there we go. -
1:58 - 2:00First finger over now,
and it's just really -
2:00 - 2:05slowly trying to get the fingers
-
2:05 - 2:08cause you are gonna find
I'm almost certain that -
2:08 - 2:15some of the fingers
want to lift right up off the fingerboard. -
2:15 - 2:17Particularly like here,
moving that third finger over. -
2:17 - 2:19Little finger wants to go "Hey!"
-
2:19 - 2:23But you gotta try and keep
it under control there. -
2:23 - 2:26The whole way, especially
here agian, that- th- -
2:26 - 2:30could really feel my little finger
wanting to lift up there. -
2:30 - 2:35Wo- wait- actually, I let them
all have a bit of a run there. -
2:35 - 2:39So we're just really trying
to get those fingers -
2:39 - 2:44so they're hardly moving at all,
and you really want to go slow with this. -
2:44 - 2:48There's absolutely no point in trying to do it fast.
-
2:48 - 2:52And you're gonna find when you
try and do this exercise yourself -
2:52 - 2:55it's actually a lot more difficult than it looks.
-
2:55 - 3:00Oh, little finger just had a little bit of a wander as well.
-
3:00 - 3:03It's difficult! You know, especially there as well.
-
3:03 - 3:08When you're changing
fingers behind little finger when it's already off. -
3:08 - 3:11Like now, it wants to lift up,
and you have to really -
3:11 - 3:15concentrate to make sure
-
3:15 - 3:17oh, there it goes again
-
3:17 - 3:20You stay down,
you little rumin. -
3:20 - 3:21Again, it was jumping
a little bit. -
3:21 - 3:24But that's the exercise.
-
3:24 - 3:26So this exercise is all about
controlling your fingers. -
3:26 - 3:29The speed thing is really-really
not important here -
3:29 - 3:30It's not at all
-
3:30 - 3:33So doing it fast will
just spoil the excercise -
3:33 - 3:34And there'd be no point in doing it
-
3:34 - 3:39You really wanna be doing slow, careful,
controlled movements -
3:39 - 3:42And making sure that
you're in control of all of your fingers -
3:42 - 3:46All the time. Most people struggle
with the little finger particularly -
3:46 - 3:49The fact is that it'll just play
and as soon as I finish playing the note -
3:49 - 3:50it jumps right
off the fingerboard -
3:50 - 3:53and that's really normal
but you'll just have to do it -
3:53 - 3:56slowly enough to get it right.
Okay, now I'm gonna move over -
3:56 - 4:00to my 1st finger now, little finger
you'll just stay there and just concentrate -
4:00 - 4:02on that little finger, making sure
it doesn't lift off. -
4:02 - 4:05Concentrate 'n' concentrate
and try, and you will find -
4:05 - 4:07that you can control it!
You can do it! -
4:07 - 4:09Even if it feels like
you can't originally, -
4:09 - 4:12you can definitely
control your fingers properly. -
4:12 - 4:16You just have to practice doing it
and learn how to make sure that -
4:16 - 4:20there's no kinda instinctive
muscle reactions thrown out -
4:20 - 4:23by your brain while you're playing.
You wanna be in control of -
4:23 - 4:27every little movement that they make.
Now, what you gonna find, it's really -
4:27 - 4:30interesting is this has a big effect
on your playing all over. -
4:30 - 4:33Without having to practice individual
things, so if you'd work on this -
4:33 - 4:36using the G major scale, as
I'm suggesting, you'll find that -
4:36 - 4:40it's just naturally kind of infects
your blues scale and the licks -
4:40 - 4:42that you're playing and songs
that you're working on. -
4:42 - 4:44Your fingers will naturally be
a lot more under control and -
4:44 - 4:47you'll find them flying off a
little bit more, if you do find it, -
4:47 - 4:50particularly, for a, you know,
well, a particular tune or -
4:50 - 4:53a riff that you're learning when
your fingers are flying about a bit, -
4:53 - 4:55then, you might wanna spend
little bit of time with that -
4:55 - 4:57one riff, or that one lick,
or whatever it is, that you're -
4:57 - 4:59struggling with, but generally
you're gonna find that this -
4:59 - 5:03one exercise, 5 minutes a day
this one, is a really big deal. -
5:03 - 5:05It's a great thing to have
in your practice routine. -
5:05 - 5:08Good little warm-up thing as well,
because it's not very strenous and -
5:08 - 5:11not very fast, so you can just
really get you know, get your brain -
5:11 - 5:14into the zone there, so
really, unbelievably great -
5:14 - 5:16exercise is it. It was a
real game-changer for me -
5:16 - 5:20to, made a huge impact on my
technique generally, so -
5:20 - 5:21I hope it does the
same for you. -
5:21 - 5:24See you for plenty more
lessons and songs very soon, -
5:24 - 5:25You take care of yourselves!
Bye-bye!
