Studying Clinical Psychology to Support Mental Health

  • 0:04 - 0:05
  • 0:09 - 0:43
I'm a university student and after changing majors and academic interests multiple times, I discovered psychology and now I want to dedicate my studies to pursue clinical psychology.
And so my question for you is, how can someone that wants to dedicate their lives to advocate for mental health and care for people's mental health when I am someone who has my own mental health as well as continuing to learn, I'm working on myself throughout my life
  • 0:48 - 0:51
you have chosen a difficult path
  • 1:00 - 1:08
and that's because if you are physically hurt and that injury is visible, we tend to acknowledge that you are a patient you're hurt
  • 1:18 - 1:36
but mental injuries are not visible to the eye.
So we often mistake a mental patient as somebody who's fully healthy then it leads to a lot of stress.
    I saw some statistics
  • 1:44 - 1:54
they said the possibility of a regular person developing mental illness is much lower than the possibility of a psychiatrist developing mental illness
  • 1:58 - 2:03
because you get affected by the conversation and therapies that you have with your patients.
  • 2:07 - 2:13
So I don't think you can actually empathize too much to your patient's stories
  • 2:17 - 2:23
in a ways you just let their stories go one year and the other and kind of develop that distance
  • 2:29 - 2:39
and most of the times they kind of self heal because you give them an opportunity to speak their story.
It's not something that you specifically do for them
  • 2:45 - 2:51
even if you engage in active listening to their story, you can't be captured by their story.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
For example, a wife curses out her husband.
  • 3:02 - 3:15
So if you get captured by that story, you almost feel like that husband is really a bad person.
I don't think that's the position or position you want to find yourself as a professional therapist
  • 3:24 - 3:42
the same time you don't want to tell her.
Try to see the situation from your husband's perspective because you know that probably is counter effective and she'll no longer come back.
  • 3:46 - 3:47
So you always have to listen
  • 3:52 - 3:54
make sure that you're not captured by that
  • 3:57 - 4:01
in actual practice it's not that it's difficult to maintain that
  • 4:07 - 4:20
do not approach any situation story of people from the perspective of right and wrong.
Just say okay, this is how this person is this is a challenge faced by this person
  • 4:38 - 4:51
whether this woman is suffering because her husband cheated or whether this woman is suffering because you can't choose between two men whatever the situation that leads to her suffering, you just need to observe as is
  • 4:56 - 5:01
because the fact that she's suffering is the same regardless of whatever situation that has led to her suffering.
  • 5:08 - 5:14
You know, a mental illness is somebody who actually goes beyond that, right somebody who has actually developed a pathology.
  • 5:22 - 5:30
So I think it's a noble profession that you have chosen for yourself at the same time you have to go in with your eyes wide open knowing that it's a difficult path.
  • 5:31 - 5:37
Yeah thank you so much for the wisdom and I'll keep that in mind as I continue my journey of education.
  • 5:49 - 5:58
So I think going forwards we're going to need a lot of people who actually is the healer is the doctor for mental illness.
  • 6:02 - 6:06
Even if you're not a psychiatrist or medical doctor, we're going to need a lot of therapists.
  • 6:17 - 6:23
I think the majority of our suffering actually is more of a mental suffering rather than physical suffering.
  • 6:30 - 6:42
So your path is great from a social, societal perspective but as an individual path, it's a difficult one.
So know that as you embark on your path.
