Tennessee Succeeds: The Importance of Early Learning

  • 0:10 - 0:11
    - We are really proud
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    of really elevating up
    high quality instruction,
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    and we're really working
    towards improving quality
  • 0:16 - 0:19
consistently across the state for all
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    of our, uh, young learners.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
And so we have a real
    opportunity this year
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    because we adopted three state
    approved pre-K curricula.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    And so we're really targeting,
    um, professional development
  • 0:31 - 0:33
around those so that we can ensure
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    that we're seeing high quality
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    and instruction in each classroom.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    - So we're doing a number of things.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
Um, we really recognize the importance
  • 0:41 - 0:44
of the early years in a child's education,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
and we have been working very
    strategically over the past
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    couple of years to improve
    the quality of instruction
  • 0:50 - 0:52
and pre-K programming across the state.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
We have explicitly aligned our standards
  • 0:56 - 0:59
with our K 12 standards to
    make that transition from pre-K
  • 0:59 - 1:01
to K, uh, a strong one.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    We have recently revised the
    list of approved curricula
  • 1:06 - 1:09
that may be used in our
    pre-K classrooms to ensure
  • 1:09 - 1:10
that our teachers are focused on
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    providing deep learning
    opportunities for students,
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    building their conceptual
    knowledge simultaneously
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    to building their skills.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    - So, so far we've um,
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    actually been engaged in
    having some professional
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    development, um, trainings going on
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    across, um, the districts.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    And it's been really exciting
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    to hear teacher testimonies
    already this early into
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    implementation where they're
    saying it's changing the way
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    they're thinking about teaching.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    And while they were always
    doing good teaching,
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    but they're being more intentional,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
like even in the vocabulary they're using
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    and connecting, learning
    across, um, standards as well
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    as really thinking about how
    to make it more meaningful
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    for the, for the children
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    and connecting it to their
    lives and families. We
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    - Are very, we're a group
    of very strong teachers
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    who very much believe in,
    um, preparing them as much
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    as we can for kindergarten
    because it's very important.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    It's essential. It's a, it's a
    grade that is often forgotten
  • 2:01 - 2:03
because they think we're just playing
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    and we're not, we're really
    doing important work down here.
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    It looks like play. Um,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
but that's, that's what makes us unique is
  • 2:08 - 2:10
because we make it beneficial play.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
    We're really valuable to
    every school as we're starting
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    that foundation that then
    gets built from kindergarten
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    to first to second,
    all the way to college.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    At this point, we've been
here long enough for our kids
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    to be in second grade
    that started this school,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
and we get compliments all the time.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    We can tell the kids
    that have been in pre-K
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    to the kids who haven't.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    So we, we are seeing
    long-term benefits for sure.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    - Well, it, um, the beginning of,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    of children's educational
    path is always, um,
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    the most important piece
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    because it's where strong
    foundations are laid
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    and we really wanna start
    them on the right trajectory
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    for learning and success.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
And, and you know, we know
    from research that most
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    of brain development happens
in the early years, so we want
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    to maximize those opportunities
  • 2:55 - 2:58
and we know that that will
    not only affect third grade
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    reading scores, but also all
    the way through high school
  • 3:01 - 3:02
and their career and life beyond.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
So we have the most important
    work that's exciting.
