During the Gilded Age men like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller made books of cash with their vast industrial empires. They pioneered new practices like horizontal integration and vertical integration. People who saw their practices as predatory on low wage factory workers called the Robber Barons. People who loved the expansion of capitalism called them Captains of Industry.
Whatever you call them, these men and their businesses marked a new age in the Industrial Revolution in America. Factories sprang up like Whack-a-Moles all across the land. And as more men, women, and children found their way into the life of factory work, they began to agitate for more rights.
Enter: Labor Unions. Labor Unions like the Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor (AFL) rose to give voice to the millions of factory workers of the time. And despite setbacks like the Haymarket Square Riot, many of the labor disputes were settled in favor of the workers.
All in all, the Gilded Age was the age of the Golden Covered Turd: some gold, and some turd, and depending one who you are, you probably believe there was more of one than the other.
