How I made $95,000 selling presets

    at how much I've made from Lightroom Presets,

    considering that

    I don't really promote them

    in a sort of dedicated fashion.

    They sort of just sat as a side product,

    sort of side project sort of thing.

    and then I also have two iPhone ProRAW
    preset packages as well.

    have made over $95,000.

    I very much just had it

    sitting in the background.

    And the reason why

    is because Lightroom presets for me
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    were never really meant
    to be a big money-maker.

    It was sort of the breadcrumbs
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    of what I was already doing,
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    which is taking photos,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    uploading them on Instagram and Twitter
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and these other places.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    I was uploading pictures
    of tech or whatever else.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    I was also just doing
    photography for myself.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    So people ask me quite often,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    "Hey, Oliur, what would you do
    if money wasn't an option?
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    You had all the money in the world
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    and you didn't have to worry
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    about making an income or whatever.
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    What would you do?"
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    I'm actually partly already doing it,
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    which is photography.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    I love photography, I love video.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    I love anything to do with cameras.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    It's just been a personal passion of mine.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    A lot of sort of hobby of mine
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    since before I was making
    any money on the Internet.

    I remember, you know, picking up
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    my dad's little Samsung phone
  • 2:09 - 2:10
    that he had at the time
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    and had a camera on it,
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    and I remember taking pictures with it.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    And I must have been like
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    10, 11, 12, something like that.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    I'm thinking like, "Man, this so cool."
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    I can take pictures.
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    This is so fascinating to me.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    I remember being fascinated by it
    ever since then.

    And I've bought cameras
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    and stuff along the way.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    Just for fun, again,
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    just out of passion
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    because I want to take pictures.

    And I think to myself,
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    if I had all the money in the world
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    and I could do whatever I wanted,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    I didn't have to worry about money anymore.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    I think all I would do
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    is take pictures.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    I would just travel and take pictures.
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    It's just what I love to do.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    So Lightroom presets for me
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    were very much just a breadcrumb thing
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    where I was already using them,
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    I already had them,
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    I already put together
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    my own sort of look for images.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    Why not turn them into presets
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    and just sell them on my website?
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    And if anyone is interested,

    they can buy them.

    If they're not, it doesn't matter.

    It just doesn't.

    It's not gonna make a difference.

    I think this is a great example
    of selling a digital product

    that necessarily doesn't
    actually need to have

    any sort of brand or face behind it.

    As long as you take good pictures,

    you share them online.

    You don't need to have your face in them.

    There don't have to be pictures of you
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    or anything like that.

    As long as you take good pictures,

    you share them online, Twitter, Instagram,
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    and people like your pictures.

    You're taking pictures that, you know,
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    people like,
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    people think look,
  • 3:20 - 3:21
    look amazing.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    There are always gonna be people asking,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    "Hey, what are your settings?"
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    "Hey, what camera are using?"
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    "Hey, what presets are you using?"
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    And that's where I sort of saw
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    the potential to make money from this
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    because people would ask me,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    "Hey, what are your settings in Lightroom?"
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    And I just bundled them up,
  • 3:39 - 3:39
    put them in a package,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    uploaded them on Gumroad and Payhip.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    And like I said, if anyone
    is interested in buying them,
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    they can buy them.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    But what I've done over the last year,
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    maybe two years,
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    is I've started pushing my presets,
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    my iPhone presets quite a bit more,
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    mainly because I'm so interested
    in iPhone photography,
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    my iPhone now has pretty much
    become my main camera.
  • 3:56 - 3:57
    Even though I love cameras,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    I have all these expensive cameras.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    I think I have six cameras right now.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    I have like five Sony cameras
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    and I have a Fujifilm camera as well,
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    a Fujifilm X100VI.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    And I already wanna buy a Leica.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    It's just because I love cameras of photography.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    But even with all those cameras,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    I still use my iPhone,
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    mainly because the iPhone
    is just so convenient, man.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    You can just have it always in your pocket,
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    this thin little device
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    that's always in your pocket.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    And because it shoots ProRAW,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    it shoots 48 megapixel pictures,
  • 4:24 - 4:25
    the quality that comes out of this thing
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    just blows my mind every time.
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    I think to myself,
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    if I'm taking pictures on my iPhone
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    and I'm editing them
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    to make them look more like
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    they're sort of professional pictures,
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    again, why not just make some presets
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    and just sell them online?
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    It just seemed to make the most sense.
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    So when Apple released the functionality
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    of ProRAW on their iPhone, again,
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    I just thought it made sense to sort of
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    edit them how I want,
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    put the presets together, sell them.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    And again, because I was sharing pictures
  • 4:48 - 4:49
    that I had shot with my iPhone,
  • 4:49 - 4:50
    people were asking,
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    "Hey, what settings are you using?"
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    "Hey, what presets are you using?"
  • 4:54 - 4:54
    So it just made sense for me
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    to package them up and sell them online.
  • 4:56 - 4:58
    My ProRAW presets actually,

    if I look at my Gumroad, my Payhip account,

    that's made $20,000.

    So the reason why
    the iPhone Presets Package 02

    hasn't sold as many

    is because I have the iPhone Creator Course,

    and the iPhone Creator Course

    is basically all the presets
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    bundled up in one price.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    And you also get all the settings,
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    the way I shoot pictures,

    all that sort of stuff in one place.

    So this has started sort of overtaking that.

    I'll be sort of pushing people to here

    rather than just buying the presets

    because this is better value, right?

    because there are gonna be people

    who are interested

    in this sort of stuff regardless,

    there are always people

    who want to achieve the same results

    in whatever you're doing.

    So this is where it just makes a lot of sense

    for me to package up in a bundle like this.

    Like I said as well,

    the great thing about this is that

    this can be completely faceless.

    just everyday stuff.

    I'm putting it on Twitter and Instagram

    and then I'm telling people

    in the description

    or the link or the caption, whatever it is,

    And of course, the same applies to pictures

    who was making $1,000,000 a year

    from Lightroom presets,

    which is just absolutely wild.

    I think some people wil be able to guess
  • 7:20 - 7:21
    who I'm talking about,
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    but there's quite a few.

    He's not just one.
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    There are quite a few creatives
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    who are making bank from presets,
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    creators that you have never have heard of,
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    photographers you have never heard of,
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    purely just because
    they're good at what they do.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    They're good at taking cool-looking pictures,
  • 7:34 - 7:35
    they're good at editing their pictures
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    and then they're packaging them up
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    into a Lightroom preset bundle
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    and then selling it online.
  • 7:41 - 7:43
    I know plenty of creators who are doing this,
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    who are making 20, 30, 40,
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    $50,000 a month.

    There are also dedicated websites to stuff like this.

    I think, again,

    a lot of people have the misconception

    that this is a saturated market,

    that there are already hundreds
  • 7:56 - 7:56
    of Lightroom presets.

    There are already thousands
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    of Lightroom presets,
  • 7:58 - 8:01
    why would someone buy
    your Lightroom presets?

    If anything that actually proves
    the market is there.

    If there are already hundreds of--
    Well, thousands,

    tens of thousands
    of Lightroom preset packages,

    surely the market is there.

    Surely there is people who are out there

    wanting to buy these things.

    And the way I see it is

    that it's not saturated

    because a person doesn't go out

    and just buy a one
    Lightroom preset package.

    Usually people buy Lightroom preset packages

    regularly every year,

    every few months, or whatever it might be,

    because styles in photography changes.

    It just makes sense
    to then package these styles up.

    Every year there is a different aesthetic,
  • 8:35 - 8:36
    there is a different style,
  • 8:36 - 8:39
    there is something else that comes along
  • 8:39 - 8:40
    that we can replicate,
  • 8:40 - 8:41
    that people wanna replicate,
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    that people want to easily
    apply to their picture.

    It's so easy to sell a different
    Lightroom preset packages.

    It's so easy to sell different looks

    because that's what people want.

    I could technically make this

    into loads of different
    Lightroom preset packages,

    even though I sort of bundle them into one.

    I could do one outdoor

    I could do a wedding

    a person who's coming along,

    and I can apply them

    to all of my different types
    of photography that I do."

    And it's not just people who have a camera

    and are taking pictures for fun

    that are buying these

    businesses buy them too,

    professional photographers buy them too.

    They might not necessarily take the preset
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    and apply it just like you have,

    but they can take the preset
  • 9:31 - 9:32
    and then adjust it,
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    tweak it to their photos,
  • 9:34 - 9:35
    their look in the way they want it.

    And that's where I think,

    again, people don't realise
    a lot of businesses,

    a lot of professionals
  • 9:40 - 9:41
    are buying these products.

    It's not just your old Joe,
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    whatever his name is, Joe John Doe,
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    sort of sitting at home
  • 9:47 - 9:47
    with his camera,
  • 9:47 - 9:48
    taking pictures
  • 9:48 - 9:49
    when he goes out for a walk.
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    No, no, no, actually those
  • 9:51 - 9:52
    are the worst type of customers.
  • 9:52 - 9:54
    The best type of customers are the ones
  • 9:54 - 9:57
    who are businesses, who are professionals,
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    who want to achieve a certain look,
  • 9:59 - 10:00
    a certain aesthetic.
  • 10:00 - 10:01
    And they know that the only way to do that
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    is to buy your Lightroom presets.
  • 10:03 - 10:04
    I also think with a product like this, it's
  • 10:04 - 10:06
    very easy to make it quite unique
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    because it's very easy to have
  • 10:09 - 10:10
    like one piece of package
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    that is your style,

    that has a specific style.

    And I think that's specifically

    why people buy my life size.

    It's not because they're necessarily

    better than someone else's

    Lightroom Presets.

    Not at all.

    They're just presets.

    I think there's just some settings

    for picture.

    The reason why people buy my life

    pieces is for my specific style,

    and I think everyone

    can build their own specific style

    when it comes to liking presets.

    You don't even necessarily

    have to be a photographer.

    There are lots of colourists,

    lots of editors and Lightroom
  • 10:39 - 10:40
    and other programs

    that don't take pictures at all.

    They simply just edit
  • 10:43 - 10:45
    other people's pictures so you don't
  • 10:45 - 10:46
    necessarily have to be a photographer.

    You can take someone else's pictures,

    get your own look, get your own aesthetic,

    and bundled up into a Lightroom preset

    package as well.

    I think if I were to start again

    from the beginning

    and I had no other sources of income

    starting from scratch

    and I want to build a business like this,

    the way I would do it would be

    so this is basically like a high level way

    I would do it.

    I would of course, take the pictures,

    get the Lightroom Presets,

    sell the store, sell the website,

    have the product on that, show

    what the product can do before and after.

    All the filters

    just show you what's possible

    I think a lot of people fall

    into the trap of thinking

    they only need a following.

    Like when I was posting pictures

    and making money

    from sort of presets and stuff,

    you know,

    I didn't have a big following at all.

    I actually grew the following

    alongside the products.

    I actually had the products

    and I don't know, maybe like a

    a few months or a few years

    into sort of doing this stuff properly

    because before

    that I was kind of

    just placing on this scam for fun.

    It wasn't really serious.

    And then when I sort of started

    taking it seriously, thinking like, Oh,

    how can I make money from this?

    You know, that's when I was like,

    I could probably go quite a few followers

    from this.

    And I remember with Instagram

    when I was posting regularly on Instagram,

    I was gaining like 10,000 followers
  • 14:56 - 14:59
    a month, which is just insane.

    Now I don't really care about.

    And Scott like that because my

    the direction
  • 15:05 - 15:06
    of what I want to do has changed.

    But I do think to myself, man, like,

    you know, if I just had to focus

    solely on selling Lightroom Presets,

    pathetic, low profile post every single day

    of offering free things.

    I see a lot of creators do this.

    A lot of creators make this mistake

    of offering stuff for free

    at the beginning

    because they think it's

    the way to get followers.

    But the problem with that is that you then

    only gain followers that are interested
  • 16:37 - 16:40
    in free stuff and free things.

    There are free
  • 16:41 - 16:42
    creators out there who have done this
  • 16:42 - 16:44
    and they have been hurt badly by it
  • 16:44 - 16:47
    because that audience is turned on them.

    They build this audience of
  • 16:48 - 16:50
    free stuff, offering free stuff,
  • 16:50 - 16:51
    offering whatever it might be.

    They're offering videos, just
  • 16:53 - 16:54
    whatever products for free.
  • 16:54 - 16:56
    And then as soon as they start
  • 16:56 - 16:57
    having a premium product,
  • 16:57 - 16:58
    something they're charging
  • 16:58 - 17:00
    for their audience goes ballistic
  • 17:00 - 17:01
    because the audience feels betrayed.

    They've just built the wrong audience,
  • 17:03 - 17:05
    the right audience,
  • 17:05 - 17:07
    the right customers, the right people
  • 17:07 - 17:08
    who you want
  • 17:08 - 17:09
    on the millions
  • 17:09 - 17:11
    of followers, 100,000 followers.

    They're actually the few key followers
  • 17:13 - 17:15
    that are that see the value
  • 17:15 - 17:16
    in what you have to offer,
  • 17:16 - 17:18
    see the value in your services
  • 17:18 - 17:19
    or your products.

    So do not make the mistake of trying

    to offer free stuff to gain a following
  • 17:24 - 17:26
    like numbers or vanity

    like numbers and nothing.

    And this is something I've learned is very,

    over the last like year two years

    that the follower count

    is actually like nonsense.

    I know people who have only a few thousand

    followers, yet they make ten, 20,

    30, 40, $50,000 a month.

    Like the follower count

    does not correlate
  • 17:45 - 17:46
    to how much money you make.

    Unless, of course, like you're
  • 17:47 - 17:49
    some famous celebrity with like 50 million
  • 17:49 - 17:51
    followers on Twitter or Instagram as a lot.

    See, that's like,

    that's like a different level.

    But you can 100% make an extra thousand

    dollars a month extra $5,000.

    with a following of less

    than like 10,000, 5000,
