  • 0:06 - 0:09
This is mahjong, a tile-based game that
  • 0:09 - 0:12
originated in China some 300 years ago.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
Today, the game and its numerous
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    variations are widely played throughout
  • 0:16 - 0:19
Asia. And it's gaining popularity in
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    other parts of the world.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
Hi, I'm Winnie. I've been playing mahjong
  • 0:23 - 0:26
for as long as I can remember, and it's
  • 0:26 - 0:29
really easy to learn. But to play this
  • 0:29 - 0:31
game, I need four people so I've invited
  • 0:31 - 0:33
my colleagues from SCMP to join me today
  • 0:33 - 0:40
to show you how it's done.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on
  • 0:43 - 0:46
Chinese symbols and characters. Try to
  • 0:46 - 0:50
think of them as playing cards in poker.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
To start the game, players first shuffle
  • 0:54 - 0:59
the tiles, roll the dice to decide who
  • 0:59 - 1:02
plays first, and each draws 13 tiles from
  • 1:02 - 1:06
the pool. The player who goes first draws
  • 1:06 - 1:10
one extra tile to kick off the game.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
"Chi." Through the course of the game, players
  • 1:13 - 1:16
take turns to draw and discard tiles. In
  • 1:16 - 1:18
order to win, you need to form four suits
  • 1:18 - 1:22
and a pair. Two of the same tiles are a
  • 1:22 - 1:26
pair. And you can form suits through
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    combinations called
  • 1:28 - 1:34
    "Chi," "Pong"
  • 1:34 - 1:39
"Gong." While playing, you can use tiles
  • 1:39 - 1:41
discarded by other players to form the
  • 1:41 - 1:44
ready hand. So, keep an eye out, as the tile
  • 1:44 - 1:46
you need might turn up any minute during
  • 1:46 - 1:53
the course of the game. Pong. After you form
  • 1:53 - 1:55
the ready hand, just patiently wait for
  • 1:55 - 1:59
the tile you need to win. It can be a
  • 1:59 - 2:01
tile discarded by other players or from
  • 2:01 - 2:04
a tile you draw from the deck. And when
  • 2:04 - 2:13
you win, you say: Sik wu! [APPLAUSE & LAUGHTER] There are many ways to
  • 2:13 - 2:15
win and the rules are slightly different
  • 2:15 - 2:18
in the many variations. But no matter
  • 2:18 - 2:20
what style you play, the keys is always
  • 2:20 - 2:24
remember to have fun. [MUSIC & LAUGHTER]
