How to Use a Drawing Tablet

  • 0:00 - 0:03
on today's episode of tablets with
  • 0:03 - 0:05
drawings on them we are looking at the
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    Rosetta Stone no stop
  • 0:08 - 0:11
stop drawing tablets we're looking at
  • 0:11 - 0:13
drawing tablets today come again little
  • 0:13 - 0:15
flat things come with a pen you plug
  • 0:15 - 0:16
them into a computer you could draw with
  • 0:16 - 0:18
them you're going to be giving people
  • 0:18 - 0:20
some tips on how to use one like for
  • 0:20 - 0:23
beginners do I look like the sort of
  • 0:23 - 0:26
person who gives tips tell you what I'll
  • 0:26 - 0:28
do you a solid why don't you let me Host
  • 0:28 - 0:30
this episode and you can go back to
  • 0:30 - 0:33
looking at your old rocks old rocks and
  • 0:33 - 0:37
I what is this I did not
  • 0:37 - 0:40
this is a drawing tablet they come in
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    different sizes from different
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    manufacturers and they're often chosen
  • 0:43 - 0:45
by new artists who are just getting
  • 0:45 - 0:47
their feet wet in digital art because
  • 0:47 - 0:49
they tend to be cheaper and are a great
  • 0:49 - 0:51
entry point the downside to one of these
  • 0:51 - 0:53
is they also tend to have a steeper
  • 0:53 - 0:56
learning curve than say a drawing tablet
  • 0:56 - 0:58
with a screen so we're here today to get
  • 0:58 - 1:00
you up the ladder of learning faster I'm
  • 1:00 - 1:02
coming down when did we get a budget for
  • 1:02 - 1:04
a ladder I'm drawing in Photoshop here
  • 1:04 - 1:07
but you can use any drawing app that you
  • 1:07 - 1:09
like I have a list of five really good
  • 1:09 - 1:10
ones that are free you can check that
  • 1:10 - 1:12
out when you're done watching this video
  • 1:12 - 1:14
link that down below in the description
  • 1:14 - 1:16
on your tablet you will see some marks
  • 1:16 - 1:19
these show your live area this is the
  • 1:19 - 1:21
area where you can draw and the live
  • 1:21 - 1:24
area maps to your computer's screen if
  • 1:24 - 1:25
you tap your pen up here in the corner
  • 1:25 - 1:28
your cursor will show up here in the
  • 1:28 - 1:30
corner on your screen tap down here
  • 1:30 - 1:31
it'll show up down here of course
  • 1:31 - 1:33
dragging your pen across the screen will
  • 1:33 - 1:35
leave a mark that's called Drawing yeah
  • 1:35 - 1:37
I am aware of that if you're new to one
  • 1:37 - 1:39
of these your main goal should be
  • 1:39 - 1:42
getting used to using it your first time
  • 1:42 - 1:45
jumping in is just not gonna feel as
  • 1:45 - 1:47
natural as it does when you're drawing
  • 1:47 - 1:49
on paper this is an adjustment everybody
  • 1:49 - 1:51
goes through it so if you start drawing
  • 1:51 - 1:52
and you feel like you don't have full
  • 1:52 - 1:54
control You Are Not Alone it does take
  • 1:54 - 1:57
some time to settle in so get ready to
  • 1:57 - 2:00
practice using this every single day
  • 2:00 - 2:02
your first goal should be getting used
  • 2:02 - 2:05
to how wide the live area of your tablet
  • 2:05 - 2:08
is so take your stylus in your hand and
  • 2:08 - 2:10
tap on a tool or part of the screen
  • 2:10 - 2:12
that's in the upper left hand corner
  • 2:12 - 2:14
then move your cursor down over to the
  • 2:14 - 2:17
right lower corner and tap again then
  • 2:17 - 2:19
move to the lower left corner and tap
  • 2:19 - 2:21
again then to the upper right corner and
  • 2:21 - 2:23
tap again the first time you do this you
  • 2:23 - 2:25
probably aren't going to be moving
  • 2:25 - 2:26
really fast like I said you are just
  • 2:26 - 2:28
getting used to the screen and how your
  • 2:28 - 2:31
pen maps to it but I want you to do this
  • 2:31 - 2:33
several times upper left lower right
  • 2:33 - 2:36
lower left upper right each time you do
  • 2:36 - 2:38
it I want you to try to do it a little
  • 2:38 - 2:40
bit faster I want you to speed up your
  • 2:40 - 2:42
hand is going to get used to moving
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    across that space and understanding
  • 2:44 - 2:45
where it needs to be to hit the various
  • 2:45 - 2:47
parts of your screen now once you feel
  • 2:47 - 2:48
comfortable moving around the screen a
  • 2:48 - 2:49
little bit I want you to practice
  • 2:49 - 2:52
something similar but on the canvas
  • 2:52 - 2:53
first of all let's go to the upper left
  • 2:53 - 2:55
hand corner of that canvas and let's
  • 2:55 - 2:58
draw a small circle not too close to the
  • 2:58 - 3:00
edge then draw one in the lower right
  • 3:00 - 3:02
corner move over to the lower left and
  • 3:02 - 3:03
draw another one then in the upper right
  • 3:03 - 3:05
and draw your circle again we are going
  • 3:05 - 3:08
to do what we did before but instead of
  • 3:08 - 3:10
speeding up what I want you to do is try
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    drawing another circle around the
  • 3:12 - 3:14
circles you've already drawn and just
  • 3:14 - 3:17
move from one to the other into the
  • 3:17 - 3:18
other you're getting the hang of this if
  • 3:18 - 3:20
you'd like you can keep going and draw
  • 3:20 - 3:22
even larger circles around those this is
  • 3:22 - 3:25
a great warm-up activity another thing
  • 3:25 - 3:27
you can try doing is practicing
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    connecting lines between those circles
  • 3:29 - 3:31
take your pen and draw a line from the
  • 3:31 - 3:33
center of one of those circles to the
  • 3:33 - 3:34
center of another one of those circles
  • 3:34 - 3:37
pick your pen up go to another area and
  • 3:37 - 3:39
connect another line as you get used to
  • 3:39 - 3:40
it you can try speeding up these lines
  • 3:40 - 3:42
and seeing if you can draw them faster
  • 3:42 - 3:44
and still stay accurate this has been
  • 3:44 - 3:46
another edition of thanks for practice
  • 3:46 - 3:49
we're not actually done practicing I
  • 3:49 - 3:51
have more if you learn through these
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    kind of Hands-On practice exercises
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    check out bradsartschool.com I have a
  • 3:57 - 3:59
brand spanking new digital art for
  • 3:59 - 4:00
beginners course where we get some
  • 4:00 - 4:02
Hands-On time with homework and all
  • 4:02 - 4:04
sorts of projects it's built for
  • 4:04 - 4:06
beginners to be an on-ramp to some of
  • 4:06 - 4:08
the more advanced drawing courses and
  • 4:08 - 4:09
tutorials out there check out the
  • 4:09 - 4:12
details on my site now back to the video
  • 4:12 - 4:14
okay you want another practice tip
  • 4:14 - 4:17
okay enough of the singing we're moving
  • 4:17 - 4:18
on now one of the great benefits to a
  • 4:18 - 4:21
tablet like this is pen pressure the
  • 4:21 - 4:22
harder you press with your pen The Wider
  • 4:22 - 4:24
or darker your stroke gets depending on
  • 4:24 - 4:26
the type of paint brush you're using
  • 4:26 - 4:29
bust open your favorite drawing app and
  • 4:29 - 4:31
grab a brush you like the one I have
  • 4:31 - 4:33
here changes sizes based on how hard I
  • 4:33 - 4:36
press on my tablet now I'm gonna make it
  • 4:36 - 4:39
bigger than what I think I need probably
  • 4:39 - 4:42
like 30 or 40 pixels now when I hover in
  • 4:42 - 4:45
Photoshop I can see how big that brush
  • 4:45 - 4:47
is going to be if I applied all of my
  • 4:47 - 4:49
pressure on my tablet it is showing me
  • 4:49 - 4:51
my brush cursor on the screen what I
  • 4:51 - 4:52
want to do with this is I want to get
  • 4:52 - 4:54
used to drawing lightly I'm going to
  • 4:54 - 4:56
start by drawing a line across the top
  • 4:56 - 4:58
of the page as light as I can then I'm
  • 4:58 - 5:00
going to draw another line but this time
  • 5:00 - 5:02
I'm gonna apply just a little bit more
  • 5:02 - 5:03
pressure and then I'm gonna do it again
  • 5:03 - 5:04
this time with a little more pressure
  • 5:04 - 5:07
the goal is to see how many lines I can
  • 5:07 - 5:09
draw before I completely max out the
  • 5:09 - 5:10
pressure of the pen now the first time
  • 5:10 - 5:12
you do do this you may only get three or
  • 5:12 - 5:14
four lines before you max out that brush
  • 5:14 - 5:16
that's totally normal what your goal for
  • 5:16 - 5:18
this exercise should be is to get as
  • 5:18 - 5:20
many different widths of lines across
  • 5:20 - 5:22
your page as possible it's harder than
  • 5:22 - 5:23
it looks because sometimes as you cross
  • 5:23 - 5:25
the page you're just gonna naturally
  • 5:25 - 5:27
apply more pressure that's okay all
  • 5:27 - 5:29
practice is good practice and you're
  • 5:29 - 5:31
just trying to get a feel for the pen
  • 5:31 - 5:33
oh I know that noise it's the question
  • 5:33 - 5:35
giraffe we're gonna answer a question
  • 5:35 - 5:38
from someone in the audience how my
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    tablet won't work I've installed it I
  • 5:39 - 5:41
have to pet pressure I Hate Everything
  • 5:41 - 5:43
PS do you like roller coasters you can't
  • 5:43 - 5:46
handle them yes I can I love roller
  • 5:46 - 5:48
coasters okay so I got your back Dr
  • 5:48 - 5:50
Octopus for life I have installed a lot
  • 5:50 - 5:52
of Graphics tablets over the years and
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    it's it's not a hard process since
  • 5:54 - 5:56
you've already installed your tablet and
  • 5:56 - 5:57
it's not working properly my first step
  • 5:57 - 6:00
would be to uninstall the software and
  • 6:00 - 6:02
then reboot your computer I know often
  • 6:02 - 6:04
one attack person tells you to reboot
  • 6:04 - 6:06
they're wasting your time um sir have
  • 6:06 - 6:08
you tried rebooting your router I just
  • 6:08 - 6:10
want you to tell me if the network in my
  • 6:10 - 6:12
area is down first but this time you
  • 6:12 - 6:14
really do need to reboot your computer
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    after installing and uninstalling now
  • 6:16 - 6:17
that your software is uninstalled you've
  • 6:17 - 6:19
rebooted hook up your tablet to your
  • 6:19 - 6:22
computer and reinstall the software then
  • 6:22 - 6:24
yes here we go again I want you to
  • 6:24 - 6:26
reboot a second time now test out your
  • 6:26 - 6:28
tablet still not working try out a few
  • 6:28 - 6:29
different drawing apps that you might
  • 6:29 - 6:32
have that have pen pressure again this
  • 6:32 - 6:34
is where having one or two free drawing
  • 6:34 - 6:35
apps installed on your computer comes in
  • 6:35 - 6:38
really handy sometimes it's just one app
  • 6:38 - 6:39
that's having a problem and that really
  • 6:39 - 6:41
will help you troubleshoot in that case
  • 6:41 - 6:44
you can Google krita no pen pressure and
  • 6:44 - 6:45
folks can help you find your way
  • 6:45 - 6:47
sometimes it's as easy as installing
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    another driver sometimes it's just
  • 6:49 - 6:50
playing with the settings of the app
  • 6:50 - 6:53
itself oh it's time for the rapid fire
  • 6:53 - 6:54
round I have some more tips for getting
  • 6:54 - 6:56
used to your new tablet and we're going
  • 6:56 - 6:57
to be going through them lightning fast
  • 6:57 - 7:01
are you ready too bad one try ditching
  • 7:01 - 7:03
your mouse technically this pen is just
  • 7:03 - 7:04
a fancy mouse it could do everything
  • 7:04 - 7:07
that your mouse can do so try just using
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    this for everyday Computing activities
  • 7:09 - 7:11
with your pen instead of your trackpad
  • 7:11 - 7:13
or your mouse surfing the web checking
  • 7:13 - 7:15
your email editing a document designing
  • 7:15 - 7:17
Ransom notes use that pen number two
  • 7:17 - 7:20
grab a photo of a sketch and try drawing
  • 7:20 - 7:23
over it for practice this is a great way
  • 7:23 - 7:25
to get used to drawing on your tablet
  • 7:25 - 7:26
you could do line art or sketch whatever
  • 7:26 - 7:28
you want to do just practice with it
  • 7:28 - 7:30
number three undo is your friend well Hi
  • 7:30 - 7:32
friend if you get a line wrong just
  • 7:32 - 7:34
control Z it and try again number four
  • 7:34 - 7:36
if you have two screens you can use your
  • 7:36 - 7:38
tablet across both this will also take
  • 7:38 - 7:40
some getting used to and you might not
  • 7:40 - 7:42
want to draw when you're set up that way
  • 7:42 - 7:44
but it will help you ditch your mouse
  • 7:44 - 7:46
number five try playing some video games
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    with your tablet I mean I wouldn't
  • 7:48 - 7:50
recommend playing Elden ring with this
  • 7:50 - 7:51
thing but there are some games designed
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    specifically for graphics tablets the
  • 7:53 - 7:55
most popular one out there is called OSU
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    it's a rhythm game and it's a really
  • 7:57 - 7:59
great way to build up ihag coordination
  • 7:59 - 8:01
number six last tip put those shortcut
  • 8:01 - 8:03
keys to use many of these tablets have
  • 8:03 - 8:05
shortcut keys and you could go into the
  • 8:05 - 8:06
settings and change those keys to
  • 8:06 - 8:09
anything you want set it to undo change
  • 8:09 - 8:11
your brush size zoom in and out force
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    quit Chrome constantly accidentally
  • 8:13 - 8:16
whatever okay I hoped all of this was
  • 8:16 - 8:17
helpful for those of you who have been
  • 8:17 - 8:19
using your tablets for a while what
  • 8:19 - 8:21
helped you learn let me know Down Below
  • 8:21 - 8:23
in the comments thank you all for
  • 8:23 - 8:24
watching and I'll talk to you in a
  • 8:24 - 8:26
    couple of days
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    foreign
  • 8:28 - 8:33
