Can Trump Become Lord of Greenland and the Panama Canal?

  • 0:00 - 0:05
American God Emperor Trump wants to expand
    America’s dominion.
  • 0:05 - 0:11
Critics say he’s crazy, but can he actually pull it off?
  • 0:11 - 0:13
Welcome to America Uncovered. I’m Chris Chappell.
  • 0:13 - 0:18
They say Manifest Destiny ended when
Hawaii embraced the bosom of the US union.
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    But fear not
  • 0:19 - 0:25
    ! It remains alive
    and well as MAGA-fest Destiny!
  • 0:25 - 0:30
Every time Donald Trump gazes upon the lands
of Greenland, the Panama Canal, and Canada,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    his eyes sparkle with possibility!
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    To
Trump, the US flag needs more stars!
  • 0:36 - 0:40
Given Trump is BFFs with Elon Musk
, it may not be long before SpaceX
  • 0:40 - 0:45
takes to the skies and adds some
    literal stars to America’s domain.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    But Trump’s earthbound
ambitions might be a stretch, even for Trump.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    Canada probably
    won’t become the 51st state.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    Though personally I’m in favor.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    Forget war for oil.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
I’m down for a war for
    poutine.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    I love that stuff.
  • 1:00 - 1:05
However, Trump is dead serious when
it comes to Greenland and the Panama Canal.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
Ahem, I mean the United States Canal.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
And the rebranded Gulf of America!
  • 1:12 - 1:13
That’s not a joke, Trump said,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
“We're going to be changing the name of
the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
which has a beautiful ring…The Gulf of America.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
What a beautiful name. And it's appropriate."
  • 1:23 - 1:26
These renamings have big “Freedom Fry”
    energy.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
And for those of you old enough to remember that reference,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    it’s time
    to schedule your first colonoscopy.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
Trump is so serious his son Donald Trump Jr.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
and other representatives traveled to Greenland…
  • 1:38 - 1:41
And met with MAGA supporters there.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
    Yes, there are actually MAGA
    supporters in Greenland. Go figure.
  • 1:45 - 1:51
When asked about his wants, Trump had
    something completely uncontroversial to say.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
“To Greenland and the Panama Canal, so forth,
  • 1:55 - 2:02
can you assure the world that as you try to get control of these areas,
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    you are not going
to use military or econo mic coercion?” “No.”
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    Warhammer is coming true.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    Guardsman Chris
    warns you about Chaos.
  • 2:11 - 2:17
True to form, the mainstream media couldn’t help but go
absolutely ballistic over that one-word response.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    Just as you’d expect,
  • 2:18 - 2:22
there’s a gazillion headlines on Trump
    potentially using military force.
  • 2:22 - 2:27
Which has led the media to compare Trump to
Vladmir Putin and his invasion of Ukraine…
  • 2:27 - 2:31
And to talk about what would happen if
NATO members went to war with each other.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
Well, considering America foots most of the
    bill for NATO,
  • 2:34 - 2:36
I think I know how that would go.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
You might be getting the impression
    that Trump is absolutely crazy,
  • 2:39 - 2:43
or worse: he’s both dumb and dangerous.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
But the US wanting Greenland and the Panama
    Canal
  • 2:45 - 2:48
isn’t nearly as outrageous as you'd think.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    Let’s first look at Greenland.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    Trump said ownership of it
    is an “absolute necessity”...
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    To save the animals!
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    They’re eating the
    whales!
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    They’re eating the polar bears!
  • 2:58 - 3:01
He even went as far as suggesting putting tariffs
    on Denmark,
  • 3:01 - 3:04
a US ally, to make the sale work.
  • 3:04 - 3:09
But this isn’t new for Trump. He’s had
eyes on Greenland since his first term.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
At the time, people thought he was joking.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    What “an absurd discussion”. Right?
  • 3:13 - 3:15
Well, it might not be as absurd as you
    think
  • 3:15 - 3:19
. This isn't the first time the US has considered purchasing Greenland.
  • 3:19 - 3:24
The US considered it in 1867 and 1946.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
It makes a lot of strategic and economic sense.
  • 3:27 - 3:32
It’s so important the US has had a base there
    since the 1950s,
  • 3:32 - 3:34
now known as Pituffik Space Base.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
You see China and Russia are rapidly
expanding their footprint in the Arctic.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
Trump wants the US, not China or Russia,
  • 3:42 - 3:47
    to access Greenland’s resources, including
oil, rare earth minerals, and uranium.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
And if you’re thinking, “But wait,
    isn’t Trump a puppet of Putin’s,
  • 3:50 - 3:55
so wouldn’t he want his master to have
all those resources and not interfere?”
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    Welcome back to reality.
  • 3:56 - 4:01
    Take it slow,
you went on a pretty nasty MSNBC bender.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
What it comes down to is the
    more resources the US has,
  • 4:04 - 4:06
the less dependent it and other countries
  • 4:06 - 4:10
are on Chinese and Russian supply chains.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
Trump also wants to keep Arctic sea lanes
  • 4:12 - 4:14
from falling under Russian or Chinese control.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
Because the last thing we need is for the
    Arctic Ocean
  • 4:17 - 4:20
to become something like a New South China Sea
  • 4:20 - 4:24
    full of militarization
    and competing territorial claims.
  • 4:24 - 4:27
And Denmark has sold territory to the US
    before—
  • 4:27 - 4:32
the Danish West Indies, which we now call the US Virgin Islands
    .
  • 4:32 - 4:35
So why not try another deal?
  • 4:35 - 4:40
Many people in Greenland don’t even
want to be under Denmark’s thumb.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
In case you haven’t heard, there’s
    a push for Greenland’s independence.
  • 4:43 - 4:46
    With a majority of Greenlanders
    already in favor of it.
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    Greenland has already drafted its
    own constitution,
  • 4:49 - 4:54
and the Prime Minister hinted at a referendum
    on independence later this year.
  • 4:54 - 4:56
But even if Greenland gains independence,
  • 4:56 - 4:59
it’ll have to worry about how to sustain itself.
  • 4:59 - 5:03
    It currently depends on
    Danish subsidies to keep afloat.
  • 5:03 - 5:06
So why not join the US?
  • 5:06 - 5:09
After all, the US and Greenland have common Viking
    roots
  • 5:09 - 5:12
, as I learned in this documentary series.
  • 5:12 - 5:16
But short of full annexation, many speculate
that Trump will try to get Greenland
  • 5:16 - 5:20
to agree to a Compacts of Free Association
    styled agreement—
  • 5:20 - 5:24
a pact similar to what the US has with several Pacific Island
    nations
  • 5:24 - 5:28
where the U.S. gets military and economic privileges in the region
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    while
    allowing countries to maintain sovereignty.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    As for the Panama Canal,
  • 5:32 - 5:37
which the US built a century ago and
gave away under President Jimmy Carter…
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    Trump cites “ridiculous” fees.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    He feels
like American ships are being ripped off.
  • 5:42 - 5:46
But that’s not the only reason
he wants the US to retake the Panama Canal.
  • 5:46 - 5:52
    Trump alludes to national
    security threats there, namely, China!
  • 5:52 - 5:56
    Panama’s president claims that
    there’s no Chinese interference
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    or participation in anything that
has to do with the Panama Canal.
  • 5:59 - 6:03
But China has a lot of its
    sticky fingers around it.
  • 6:03 - 6:06
    Since 1996, Panama has outsourced
    management
  • 6:06 - 6:10
of the canal’s two entry ports to a subsidiary of Hutchison
    Whampoa,
  • 6:10 - 6:13
    a Hong Kong-based shipping firm.
  • 6:13 - 6:19
Which, by the way, co-owns a real
estate joint venture with Aviation Industry Corporation of China ,
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    one
    of China’s largest defense companies.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
This is despite the fact that the US and Panama
    made a deal
  • 6:24 - 6:28
that guaranteed Panamanian operational control, local security
  • 6:28 - 6:32
    , and ownership with the
understanding the canal would remain neutral.
  • 6:32 - 6:36
Wow. I can’t believe Panama would
    outsource work to China.
  • 6:36 - 6:38
Thankfully no American companies do that.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
Boy, that would be really stupid.
  • 6:40 - 6:43
When the agreement was first made,
Hong Kong was a British colony,
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    But times have changed.
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    It’s now
    under mainland China’s control.
  • 6:48 - 6:52
And China has been making tons of
    investments around the Panama canal.
  • 6:52 - 6:55
With dozens of Chinese companies operating
    in the area,
  • 6:55 - 6:59
building infrastructure and commercial projects in sectors like mining,
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    finance, logistics, and telecommunications.
  • 7:01 - 7:06
Given that every Chinese company must
    obey the Chinese Communist Party,
  • 7:06 - 7:10
it’s safe to say that they all act
    as agents for Chinese influence.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
So whenever you see tons of Chinese investments,
  • 7:12 - 7:16
you bet you’re seeing tons of
    Chinese corruption and influence.
  • 7:16 - 7:19
In fact, according to an analysis by the
    China Index
  • 7:19 - 7:21
, an initiative created by Doublethink Lab ,
  • 7:21 - 7:26
    a civil society organization
    dedicated to studying digital authoritarianism,
  • 7:26 - 7:30
Panama is one of the most China-corrupted
    countries in the world,
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    ranking at number 12.
  • 7:32 - 7:36
There’s especially a lot of Chinese
    influence in Panama’s domestic
  • 7:36 - 7:39
and foreign policy, as well as media and society.
  • 7:39 - 7:43
So the US has every right
    to be concerned about this.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
Over 60 percent of goods transiting
  • 7:46 - 7:50
through the Panama Canal originate in
or end up in the US market.
  • 7:50 - 7:53
Should war between the US and China break
    out,
  • 7:53 - 7:55
    China could easily weaponize ports.
  • 7:55 - 7:58
China could surveil ship and cargo movements …
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    Hinder US naval ship movement…
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    Disrupt supply chains…
  • 8:02 - 8:04
Cripple the US economy, and more.
  • 8:04 - 8:09
So… yeah. Wanting the Panama Canal suddenly
    seems less manifest destiny
  • 8:09 - 8:13
and more “Why did we ever give it away in the first place,
    what were we thinking?!”...
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    destiny.
  • 8:15 - 8:21
Trump knows that he needs to put the US in a
stronger position to counter Russia and China.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
That’s why he’s looking at every possible
    avenue,
  • 8:23 - 8:25
no matter how crazy it might sound.
  • 8:25 - 8:29
After all, the man does have a golden throne.
  • 8:29 - 8:30
    What do you think?
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    Can you imagine a
world with more than 50 US states?
