Journey 2050 Lesson 7: Technology & Innovation | Self-Guided Experience
-
0:04 - 0:07PRESENTER: This is the Journey 2050
self-guided experience. -
0:07 - 0:11You are on lesson seven
on innovation and technology. -
0:13 - 0:16For step two of this lesson,
you're going to pause this video -
0:16 - 0:19and start watching
the TED Talk that's called, -
0:19 - 0:22"A global food crisis
may be less than a decade away." -
0:22 - 0:27Note that you're only gonna watch
the t--first 2 minutes and 29 seconds -
0:27 - 0:29of this particular TED Talk,
-
0:29 - 0:31and then you're going
to consider a statement -
0:31 - 0:35that Sara makes in this TED Talk
and respond to it on your handout. -
0:36 - 0:39After you're done with step two,
move right on to step three, -
0:39 - 0:43and that is to watch the "Journey 2050:
Technology & Innovation" video, -
0:43 - 0:45and then answer the three questions.
-
0:46 - 0:48So with those instructions,
pause this video -
0:48 - 0:51until you finish step three
on your handout. -
0:53 - 0:57You should have just finished
the technology and innovation video, -
0:57 - 1:00and hopefully you have
also answered the three questions. -
1:00 - 1:01But just to...
-
1:02 - 1:05uh, reiterate this reflection
just a little bit, -
1:05 - 1:06make sure that you're taking time
-
1:06 - 1:09to think about which innovation
you think is most impactful, -
1:09 - 1:14and what some of the pros and cons
of these new technologies...could be -
1:14 - 1:16in relation to our sustainability.
-
1:18 - 1:21For step four of the lesson,
I want to discuss just a little bit -
1:21 - 1:26to make sure you understand the difference
between a developing country, -
1:26 - 1:28and a developed country.
-
1:28 - 1:31Developed countries are industrialized.
-
1:31 - 1:35they have high standards of living,
they have strong economic growth. -
1:36 - 1:40Developing countries
are typically agrarian, -
1:40 - 1:42meaning that they're not industrialized.
-
1:42 - 1:45They're more centered around
agriculture, with more people, -
1:46 - 1:48participating in agriculture.
-
1:49 - 1:50Um, they also have,
-
1:50 - 1:56lower standards of living, and they quite
often have a weak economy with slow, -
1:56 - 1:59or even nonexistent growth.
-
2:00 - 2:05So, make sure that you keep these in mind,
uh, as we move on to step four. -
2:08 - 2:12For step four of the lesson,
you're going to pause this video, -
2:12 - 2:16and go back to the TED talk
that you started in step two, -
2:17 - 2:20and you're going to finish
watching the rest of the Ted talk, -
2:20 - 2:23and answer the questions on your handout.
-
2:24 - 2:27We're now on step five
of your handout. And, -
2:27 - 2:31what I want to do in this step is really
try to pull a lot of things together that, -
2:31 - 2:34we have learned throughout the
entire "Journey 2050" program. -
2:34 - 2:36We're coming to the end,
we're almost there. -
2:36 - 2:38But, I want to ask you a question.
-
2:38 - 2:42How do consumers like yourself
influence what producers grow? -
2:44 - 2:45Take a minute to just,
-
2:45 - 2:49think about that and think about
you, yourself as a consumer, -
2:49 - 2:52How do you influence what producers grow?
-
2:55 - 2:57If you think back to lesson,
-
2:57 - 3:01four, on economies, we talked
about the law of supply and demand, -
3:01 - 3:04and we discussed how
when there is a high demand, -
3:05 - 3:08that the price, prices go up and
more things are produced. -
3:08 - 3:13When there's low demand,
prices go down and less of, -
3:13 - 3:14that will eventually be produced.
-
3:14 - 3:19So, you as a consumer
have the ability to influence, -
3:19 - 3:26what producers, or farmers, same thing,
what producers grow and how they grow it. -
3:26 - 3:29So your choices will impact
overall sustainability, -
3:29 - 3:31throughout your life.
-
3:33 - 3:34In summary, I want to talk about,
-
3:34 - 3:38three ways we can expand
our capacity to produce food. -
3:39 - 3:43The first is by developing and
implementing new technologies. -
3:43 - 3:48We talked about best management practices
throughout the "Journey 2050" program. -
3:48 - 3:52Those best management practices
are going to change throughout your life, -
3:52 - 3:56as new things are discovered, as research
is done, and we're going to continue, -
3:56 - 4:01finding better ways and better
technologies to use our resources wisely. -
4:03 - 4:08The second is to help developing countries
improve their farming efficiency. -
4:11 - 4:14The third and the last is learning
how consumer choices, -
4:14 - 4:18can either support or challenge
food sustainability. -
4:21 - 4:22To finish up this lesson,
-
4:22 - 4:26go ahead and review the key points
that are found at the end of your handout. -
4:27 - 4:28Congratulations!
-
4:28 - 4:32This marks the end of the entire
"Journey 2050" program. -
4:32 - 4:36You should at this point
be able to answer the question, -
4:36 - 4:41How can we sustainably feed nearly
10 billion people by the year 2050? -
4:42 - 4:43Hope you've enjoyed the path.
