Journey 2050 Lesson 7: Technology & Innovation | Self-Guided Experience

  • 0:04 - 0:07
PRESENTER: This is the Journey 2050
    self-guided experience.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    You are on lesson seven
    on innovation and technology.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
For step two of this lesson,
you're going to pause this video
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    and start watching
    the TED Talk that's called,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    "A global food crisis
may be less than a decade away."
  • 0:22 - 0:27
Note that you're only gonna watch
    the t--first 2 minutes and 29 seconds
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    of this particular TED Talk,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    and then you're going
    to consider a statement
  • 0:31 - 0:35
that Sara makes in this TED Talk
and respond to it on your handout.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
After you're done with step two,
move right on to step three,
  • 0:39 - 0:43
and that is to watch the "Journey 2050:
    Technology & Innovation" video,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
and then answer the three questions.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    So with those instructions,
    pause this video
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    until you finish step three
    on your handout.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
    You should have just finished
    the technology and innovation video,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    and hopefully you have
    also answered the three questions.
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    But just to...
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    uh, reiterate this reflection
    just a little bit,
  • 1:05 - 1:06
make sure that you're taking time
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    to think about which innovation
    you think is most impactful,
  • 1:09 - 1:14
and what some of the pros and cons
    of these new technologies...could be
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    in relation to our sustainability.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
For step four of the lesson,
I want to discuss just a little bit
  • 1:21 - 1:26
to make sure you understand the difference
    between a developing country,
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    and a developed country.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    Developed countries are industrialized.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
They have high standards of living,
    they have strong economic growth.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    Developing countries
    are typically agrarian,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    meaning that they're not industrialized.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    They're more centered
    around agriculture with more people,
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    participating in agriculture.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    Um, they also have
    lower standards of living,
  • 1:51 - 1:56
and they quite often have a w--
    a weak economy with slow,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    or, uh, even nonexistent growth.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    So make sure
that you keep these in mind, uh,
  • 2:03 - 2:05
as we move on to step four.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
For step four of the lesson,
you're going to pause this video
  • 2:12 - 2:16
and go back to the TED Talk
that you started in step two.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    You're going to finish watching
the rest of the TED Talk
  • 2:20 - 2:22
and answer the questions on your handout.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
We're now on step five of your handout
and what i want to do in this step,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
is really try to pull a lot of things
    together that we've
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    learned throughout
    the entire Journey 2050 program.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    We're coming to the end,
    we're almost there.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
But I want to ask you a question.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
    How do consumers like yourself
    influence what producers grow?
  • 2:44 - 2:47
Take a minute to just think about that
    and think about,
  • 2:47 - 2:52
    you yourself as a consumer,
how do you influence what producers grow?
  • 2:55 - 2:59
If you think back to lesson four
    on economies we talked about
  • 2:59 - 3:01
the law of supply and demand,
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    and we discussed how
when there is a high demand,
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    that the price--prices go up
    and more things are produced.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    When there's low demand
    prices go down,
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    and less of that that
    will eventually be produced.
  • 3:14 - 3:19
    So you as a consumer
    have the ability to influence,
  • 3:19 - 3:26
what producers or farmers same thing,
what producers grow and how they grow it.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    So your choices will impact
    overall sustainability
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    throughout your life.
  • 3:33 - 3:34
In summary I want to talk about
  • 3:34 - 3:38
    three ways we can expand
    our capacity to produce food.
  • 3:39 - 3:43
The first, is by developing and
    implementing new technologies.
  • 3:43 - 3:48
We talked about best management practices
    throughout the Journey 2050 program.
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    Those best management practices
are going to change throughout your life,
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    as new things are discovered,
    as research is done,
  • 3:55 - 3:59
and we're going to continue finding
    better ways and better technologies
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    to use our resources wisely.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    The second, is to help
    developing countries
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    improve their farming efficiency.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    The third and the last,
    is learning how consumer choices
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    can either support
    or challenge food sustainability.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    To finish up this lesson,
  • 4:22 - 4:26
go ahead and review the key points
that are found at the end of your handout.
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    Congratulations!
  • 4:28 - 4:32
    This marks the end
of the entire Journey 2050 program.
  • 4:32 - 4:36
    You should at this point
be able to answer the question,
  • 4:36 - 4:41
How can we sustainably feed nearly
10 billion people by the year 2050?
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    Hope you've enjoyed the path.
