What's it like riding with FLIXBUS?

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    GLOVESTRAINS: Hey, everyone!
    GLovesTrains 'ere.
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    Now today, I'm doing
    one of the things
  • 0:04 - 0:06
that's been on my sort of
    bucket list type of thing.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
And it is to ride with FlixBus.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Now FlixBus,
    contrary to the name,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    is a worldwide coach operator.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    It serves over 3,000 destinations
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    across 39 countries.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    Today, I'm gonna be
    travelling with FlixBus
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    from Manchester to London.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
I am really excited for this, though.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    I'm just at Shudehill Interchange.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
In front of me is the tram stop
  • 0:28 - 0:30
and behind me is the bus station.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
However, I have got over an hour
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    before I need to go
    into the bus station, so
  • 0:34 - 0:36
I think I'm gonna go and...
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    stock up on some snacks
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    for this long journey ahead.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    Squishy boobies!
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 0:47 - 0:48
Right, I've got some snacks now
  • 0:48 - 0:50
and I have picked up Lucy.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    We are at stand G.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
I guess it's my favourite stand.
    (LAUGHS)
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    And we are waiting...
    I think we've got about
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    half an hour to wait.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    But then again, the coach...
  • 0:59 - 1:01
I keep wanting to say "bus,"
    honestly.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
The coach is probably gonna pull in
    a little bit earlier,
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    hopefully anyway,
    so we can get onboard.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
But it is the 10:50 service
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    which is the second service
  • 1:08 - 1:10
of the day on a Sunday,
  • 1:10 - 1:11
'cause yep, we are travelling down
    on a Sunday,
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    ...down to London.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
So, we're just gonna sit 'ere
  • 1:15 - 1:16
and wait for the coach to come in.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    Well, that's gone melons up.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    Basically, our coach
    has been cancelled.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    We were actually told
    three days ago
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    that it was cancelled, but
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    Lucy didn't check her email.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
So we've had to reschedule it.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    But the next coach
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    is only at 15:40.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    So we've now got
  • 1:36 - 1:38
five hours to kill in Manchester,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    before we can actually
    go down to London.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    Right, we've successfully...
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    killed five hours.
    It's actually flown by.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    Doing long waits with Lucy
    is actually a great help.
  • 1:48 - 1:49
We're just at stand G again.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
And our FlixBus is about to pull in
    any second.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    LUCY: Want the window?
    G: Yeah, please. Thank you.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    All right, we're onboard now.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
When we booked the tickets online,
    it did give an option
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    whether you wanted
    to reserve a seat.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
We tried to get the back seats,
    but they were already taken.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    So we ended up reserving
the two in front of that.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    However, now that
    we're on a different coach,
  • 2:14 - 2:15
we have been still given seats
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    5C and 5D.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    We did have to pay
an extra £1.99, I think, each
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    to reserve the seats.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    But because obviously
we're on a different coach now,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
they have refunded us that amount.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    DRIVER: 'Welcome aboard
    this 030 service.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    'When you use the toilet
whilst the coach is in motion,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
'take extra care going down the stairs.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    'Also, strongly recommend
    when you use the toilet,
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    'lock the door behind you.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    'Saves any embarrassment
on someone walking in on you.
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    'Also, please do not
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    'flush any tissues,
    paper towels, toilet rolls
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    'down it.
    It will only block it
  • 2:48 - 2:50
'and close it for the duration
    of this service.'
  • 2:50 - 2:51
G: We have set off now.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    We're just making our way
    through the centre of Manchester.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
Now, it is gonna take us
    overall the journey,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
five hours thirty to get from
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    Manchester to London.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
I have been going down to London
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    a little bit more
    this past year, actually.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    But obviously,
    usually I take the train.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    It is a shorter journey
    on the train, of course.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    But also, it's more expensive
    on the train.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
The tickets per person for us
    have ended up costing
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    just £7.99.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    But you also might
    remember me saying,
  • 3:20 - 3:21
once upon a time in a vlog,
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    that coaches are the only
    form of transport...
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    well, that I know of,
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    that give me travel sickness.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
So, we'll see how I cope with that.
  • 3:29 - 3:30
But yeah, like I said before,
  • 3:30 - 3:33
this is just one of those things
that I've just always wanted to do.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 3:46 - 3:47
We are on the motorway now.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
And we are pretty much gonna be
    travelling along motorways...
  • 3:51 - 3:52
the whole ride down to London.
  • 3:52 - 3:53
But when I first stepped on here,
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    I was actually surprised
    at the interior.
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    Because obviously, the exterior
  • 3:56 - 3:59
is a bright lime green colour,
    which I do love.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
I do also love the interior of this.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    But I almost thought,
there'll be green inside of here as well.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
But it is a black and red theme.
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    LUCY: Simplified colours are used
  • 4:08 - 4:10
for easier transferring out of the fleet
    in the future.
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    G: Thank you, bus expert.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    Also down the coach,
obviously there's a lot of seats.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    There's also overhead luggage space.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
You are allowed to bring one...
  • 4:19 - 4:20
piece of hand luggage with you.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    Or you can pay extra
if you want to bring more.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    There's also air-con throughout
  • 4:25 - 4:27
and free Wi-fi which can be used.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
And also, just a little bit
    further back behind us,
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    there is a toilet,
    which is great for me.
  • 4:32 - 4:33
And inevitably, I will be going
  • 4:33 - 4:35
checking that out at some point.
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    Now, as for your suitcases,
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    you're allowed to bring
    one suitcase per person.
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    And they do...take that
and put it below the seats
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    in the luggage storage space,
  • 4:44 - 4:46
as you're boarding onto the coach.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    Now at your seat itself,
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    you have got...
    There is a USB port
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    which is on the back
of the seat in front of you.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    However, mine isn't working.
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    Lucy's is working though,
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    so I shall be
    using hers later on.
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    We've got a seat tray
    with two cup-holders.
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    Handy for Lucy
    'cause she drinks a lot.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
And we've also got this little
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    slot thing
where you can put your phone
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    and stand it up.
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    (LAUGHS)
    There's also a little flap,
  • 5:09 - 5:11
like what you find on aeroplanes,
  • 5:11 - 5:12
where you put like magazines and stuff.
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    There's a curtain.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
Above you is where the air-con is.
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    There's also a Stop button.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    However, you don't actually
    need to use that,
  • 5:19 - 5:21
because all the coaches on FlixBus
  • 5:21 - 5:24
stop at all the calling points anyways.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    And then, of course,
    you've got the seat.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    You have got a seatbelt.
You do have to wear your seatbelt, of course.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
And you've got a headrest on here.
  • 5:30 - 5:33
    The seat itself,
    I think it's pretty comfy.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    You can also recline it,
    if you so wish to,
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    you know,
    go a little bit backwards.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    But I'm good sitting upright.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    And at the very bottom,
    you do have a footrest.
  • 5:41 - 5:42
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    It's raining, it's pouring,
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    Lucy's nearly snoring.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
But no, yeah, it is actually
  • 6:06 - 6:07
    proper raining out there
    at the minute.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
And it's been like really sunny
  • 6:09 - 6:10
over the past few days as well.
  • 6:10 - 6:13
    So...I'm definitely we're inside
    on this coach.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    As opposed to waiting around
    out in the rain.
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    But anyways,
    we have just passed over
  • 6:17 - 6:19
the West Coast Main Line, actually.
  • 6:19 - 6:21
And we are now making our way
    through Stafford.
  • 6:21 - 6:23
Which is where the Knicker Monster lives.
  • 6:24 - 6:25
So I am on the lookout.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
LUCY: Pretty sure it won't be out.
    It's not Halloween.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    G: It might be Halloween
by the time this vlog goes out!
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    (BUS NOISE)
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    (SLAPPING SOUND)
    G AND LUCY: (LAUGH)
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 6:47 - 6:50
G: We are on the approach
    to our first stop now.
  • 6:50 - 6:53
Now this is the 030 route
    we're travelling on,
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    which goes from Glasgow...
  • 6:56 - 6:58
and it stops at Lancaster, Preston,
  • 6:58 - 7:00
    and then Manchester,
which is obviously where we got on.
  • 7:01 - 7:03
We make two calling points en route
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    at Birmingham and
    London Finchley Road,
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    before we reach the terminus
    of London Victoria.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
Now the coach that we were
meant to get on this morning,
  • 7:12 - 7:14
that was on the 023 route,
  • 7:15 - 7:17
    which runs from Manchester,
    calls at the two stops,
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    and then terminates
    at London Victoria.
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    DRIVER: 'Right, sorry about that.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
'We had an alarm keep going off
  • 7:34 - 7:35
'for the last hour and a half.'
    (CHILD CHEERS)
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    DRIVER: 'It turns out
    it was the wheelchair door.
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    'Apologies for the young lady
    that her bag fell out.
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    'But...but we did
    pick everything up for you.'
  • 7:44 - 7:47
    PASSENGER: You really did.
    G: (LAUGHS)
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    We are leaving Scaremingham now.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
A lot of people did actually get off.
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    So I think it is
one of the more popular stops
  • 7:54 - 7:55
    along this route.
  • 7:55 - 7:57
But also, a lot of people did get on.
  • 7:58 - 7:59
    We were sitting there
    for a little while,
  • 7:59 - 8:01
    because there was a problem
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    with an alarm going off
    on the coach.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    And...that was finally sorted out.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    It was some problem
    with the disabled door.
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    But we are now running
    about twenty minutes late.
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    Hopefully, we will make up...
  • 8:13 - 8:16
    that time back
on the way down to London.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    And do you know what?
  • 8:18 - 8:21
I actually have not felt sick
    at all, so far.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
I'm actually really enjoying this ride.
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    (LOUD BUS NOISE)
Okay, the toilet is very small.
  • 8:42 - 8:44
And it's very loud and rattly.
  • 8:45 - 8:48
    But you're not even allowed
    to flush toilet paper.
  • 8:49 - 8:50
I use a lot of toilet paper!
    (LAUGHS)
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 9:01 - 9:02
Well, I was about to say it was
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    absolutely just chucking it down
  • 9:04 - 9:05
    and you could barely see
    out the windows.
  • 9:05 - 9:06
But it's gone a little lighter now.
  • 9:06 - 9:08
    And I think
the rain's calming down a bit.
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    (LAUGHS)
    As for the coach,
  • 9:10 - 9:11
    we are on...
  • 9:11 - 9:13
    I'm not supposed
    to call them units,
  • 9:13 - 9:14
    I know, Lucy keeps
    telling me off for it.
  • 9:15 - 9:17
But we're on 0643 and this is
  • 9:17 - 9:20
    a Volvo 9700
  • 9:20 - 9:22
which is actually a newer model.
    (CHILD SHOUTS)
  • 9:22 - 9:25
    I have been informed
that it's only a year old.
  • 9:25 - 9:28
    We have got thereabouts
    around two hours left, so...
  • 9:29 - 9:31
I think we're gonna just get
    the snacks back out.
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    I've actually bought
    a beetroot sandwich.
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    I saw it in Co-op, I mean.
    (LAUGHS)
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    That sounds like something
I would invent, to be fair.
  • 9:38 - 9:40
So, let's give that a try.
  • 9:40 - 9:41
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 9:43 - 9:44
It does taste all right, to be fair.
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    I do actually love beetroot.
  • 9:46 - 9:48
It's crunchy and pickly. Do you want a taste?
    (CHILD SHOUTS)
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    LUCY: It's actually quite nice!
  • 9:53 - 9:55
G: Do you like that? I'm surprised you like that.
LUCY: But I don't like the tex...
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 10:07 - 10:09
G: Oh look, we're going by
    a diversionary route.
  • 10:09 - 10:11
Ooh, there's some flowing water there.
  • 10:13 - 10:15
    But basically,
    there is a major delay
  • 10:15 - 10:16
on the M1 at the moment.
  • 10:17 - 10:19
So, the drivers are taking us
  • 10:19 - 10:20
    around through Milton Keynes
  • 10:20 - 10:22
    and tryna avoid that.
  • 10:22 - 10:24
    It will mean we're
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    a little more delayed
    going into London.
  • 10:26 - 10:28
    (BUS RATTLES)
But if we were to stay on the M1,
  • 10:28 - 10:31
we'd be an hour further delayed
    getting into London.
  • 10:31 - 10:33
    There's also
    nowhere near as many
  • 10:33 - 10:36
    as in actual Roundabout Central,
    Chorley, but...
  • 10:36 - 10:38
there are quite a few roundabouts
    we're going around
  • 10:38 - 10:41
at the minute in Milton Keynes.
  • 10:41 - 10:42
    Do you know what?
    It's probably gonna be dark
  • 10:42 - 10:44
by the time we get into London
    at this rate!
  • 10:44 - 10:46
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 10:58 - 11:00
We have just left the motorway now
  • 11:00 - 11:02
    and that is us done
  • 11:02 - 11:04
    with motorways
for the rest of the ride.
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    Should be coming into
    near Finchley Road
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    in about ten, fifteen minutes.
  • 11:09 - 11:10
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 11:19 - 11:20
    We've pulled in
    to Finchley Road now.
  • 11:20 - 11:23
    And it honestly felt like
    the whole coach just emptied.
  • 11:23 - 11:25
There are still a few people on.
  • 11:25 - 11:27
But Lucy has just told me,
    actually, that...
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    'Cause I was wondering,
    "I wonder if anybody would
  • 11:30 - 11:32
    "actually get on here
    to go to Victoria?"
  • 11:32 - 11:33
    But you're not allowed to...
  • 11:33 - 11:35
to book between those two stops.
  • 11:35 - 11:38
And also, there's an Aldi Local
  • 11:38 - 11:39
across the road from this stop.
  • 11:39 - 11:41
I've never in my life seen an Aldi Lo...
  • 11:41 - 11:43
    What is an Aldi Local?
  • 11:43 - 11:44
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 11:52 - 11:54
    (BACKGROUND CHATTER)
G: It will have been half an hour since
  • 11:54 - 11:56
    we left Finchley Road,
    by the time
  • 11:56 - 11:59
    we do pull very shortly
    into Victoria.
  • 11:59 - 12:01
As for the light late evenings...
  • 12:01 - 12:02
it certainly is going dark now.
  • 12:02 - 12:04
Hence why they did put the lights on
  • 12:04 - 12:05
    a little while back.
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    And do you know what?
    I'm so relaxed right now.
  • 12:07 - 12:09
I mean I could do with
  • 12:09 - 12:10
stretching my legs a little bit,
    not gonna lie.
  • 12:11 - 12:13
    But...yeah, I kinda don't wanna
    get off here, really!
  • 12:13 - 12:14
    Could actually fall asleep.
  • 12:14 - 12:16
    I was initially tempted
  • 12:16 - 12:18
    to do the night coach
    down to London.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
    But...in the end,
  • 12:20 - 12:21
    it just turned out
    handier for us
  • 12:22 - 12:23
to get the day one down.
  • 12:23 - 12:24
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 12:35 - 12:36
All right, we're off the coach now.
  • 12:36 - 12:38
We've just picked up our suitcase.
  • 12:38 - 12:40
    We were supposed to arrive
    at ten past nine,
  • 12:40 - 12:43
    but we were about
twenty minutes delayed, to be fair.
  • 12:43 - 12:45
I thought it was gonna be
    a little bit later.
  • 12:46 - 12:48
But yeah, we're here at half nine.
  • 12:48 - 12:49
    And I have been forewarned
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    that Victoria Coach Station
    (LUGGAGE WHEELS RATTLE)
  • 12:51 - 12:54
    is absolutely humungous.
  • 12:54 - 12:56
    Apparently, it's split
    into several buildings.
  • 12:56 - 12:59
    We've just come out of
    the arrivals building.
  • 12:59 - 13:01
    It is only like
    a five, ten minute walk
  • 13:01 - 13:03
    to Victoria railway station.
  • 13:03 - 13:04
    (HAPPY MUSIC)
  • 13:05 - 13:07
    (MUSIC ENDS)
  • 13:07 - 13:08
    (TRAFFIC NOISE)
  • 13:08 - 13:10
G: Well, I have really enjoyed that.
  • 13:10 - 13:12
    What an experience
    riding FlixBus
  • 13:12 - 13:13
    for the first time.
  • 13:14 - 13:16
    Even with the...
    kid in front of us
  • 13:16 - 13:18
    pretending to be half-duck
    the whole way,
  • 13:18 - 13:20
    throwing cake at my shoes!
    (LAUGHS)
  • 13:20 - 13:21
But anyways, I tell you what,
  • 13:21 - 13:24
    I didn't get a single bit
    of travel sickness
  • 13:24 - 13:26
the whole way down just then.
    I mean,
  • 13:26 - 13:29
    I don't think I've ever had that
    on a coach before.
  • 13:29 - 13:30
I think the newer modern seats
  • 13:30 - 13:32
really did help with that as well.
  • 13:32 - 13:34
And I have been left wondering,
    actually like,
  • 13:34 - 13:36
what happens if you need a poo?
  • 13:36 - 13:38
    Because you literally had to
    put the toilet paper
  • 13:38 - 13:41
    in an open bin
at the side of the toilet.
  • 13:41 - 13:43
    Anyways, let's leave that one
    to imagination.
  • 13:44 - 13:45
    Thank you very much
    for watching, everyone!
  • 13:46 - 13:47
    Byesie byes!
