Julie: Hey, it's Julie with Mahalo.com
with some hints on
-
orders of operations.
-
Now when solving many problems,
you have to go in a very specific
-
order in order to get the correct answer.
-
And the correct order is:
-
Parentheses,
-
exponents,
-
then multiplication and division,
-
then addition and subtraction.
-
Students across the country
remember this as
-
"Please Excuse My
Dear Aunt Sally."
-
Good way to remember it.
-
Now it's important to know
that these go in certain sections.
-
Parentheses goes first.
-
The next section, exponents.
-
The section after that is
multiplication and division,
-
so we do multiplication and division
from left to right,
-
in order that's seen in the problem,
-
that's very, very important.
-
Then, obviously,
addition and subtraction.
-
Same thing, from left to right
in order that it's seen.
-
Now you can consider these sections
a little bit like
-
levels of a video game.
-
You can't move on to the next level
until you've completed the first one.
-
So you need to go through your
entire problem and do
-
all parentheses first.
-
Once you finish that,
you move on to exponents.
-
Once you finish that, your next level
is multiplication and division.
-
And you do all multiplication and division
from left to right.
-
Once you finish that, you can then move
on to your addition and subtraction.
-
And that's order of operations.
-
Good luck!
-
