[Calm music]
-
You know, I always tell my students,
-
and we always say this,
especially, like, when
-
ICE raids are happening or when the
-
current administration has said
something
-
that's harmful towards immigrants
-
or refugees, I ground them in
-
this exercise where we repeat that
-
"I belong wherever I place my feet upon,"
-
and that's something I actually heard
-
from a friend of mine.
-
And we say that, because it's
trying to remind us
-
that there is this narrative that
-
somehow humans don't
belong wherever they are
-
and that they're not worthy of
just being and existing,
-
and that is not true.
-
It is a human right to migrate,
-
it has been around since
the beginning of time.
-
It is a human right to want to seek safety
-
for your children and for yourself.
-
It is a human right to move away
-
from spaces that are unsafe to you.
-
And there is humanity and there is beauty
-
in that struggle. The reality is that as a
-
human being, you deserve to exist
-
wherever you want to exist,
-
and that you are worthy.
-
And I always try to remind
my students that,
-
no matter what you hear,
-
I want you to bring yourself
back to that truth.
-
And I wish that politicians and I wish
-
that everyone in the world
could see that truth,
-
and could always return to that whenever
-
they're internalizing these harmful
-
and horrible narratives about
-
immigrants and refugees out there.
-
When you meet our students,
-
when you meet our families and our kids
-
and you learn their stories
-
and you hear how strong and brave
-
and resilient they are, you have no choice
-
but to turn towards that truth.
