Campaign role

  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Campaign Ambassador
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    BSL in our Hands Campaign
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    ROLE DESCRIPTION
  • 0:15 - 0:25
The BDA wants you to bring your
personal experience, as a parent of a deaf child,
  • 0:25 - 0:35
to help us make a lasting impact for
deaf children in the Early Years.
  • 0:36 - 0:46
Your support is vital to our
    campaigning and #TakingBSLForward.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    Our vision
  • 0:50 - 1:02
In the wake of the BSL Act 2022,
the BDA launched a 10-year strategy,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    “Taking BSL Forward”.
  • 1:06 - 1:14
Our goal is that every deaf baby,
child and adult in the UK will have a
  • 1:14 - 1:20
good quality of life where there are no
    communication barriers and
  • 1:20 - 1:27
    British Sign Language (BSL/ISL)
is provided a space to flourish.
  • 1:28 - 1:37
One of the core areas of focus in our
strategy is Early Years. We believe it is
  • 1:37 - 1:48
a vital time of a child’s development and
by adding value here, the issues affecting
  • 1:48 - 1:54
Deaf people later in life can be avoided.
  • 1:55 - 2:00
    BSL in Our Hands Campaign
  • 2:02 - 2:12
We launched the ‘BSL In Our Hands’
campaign in March 2024, calling for
  • 2:12 - 2:24
the Government to fund free BSL/ISL lessons
in the home for the parents and families
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    with deaf babies and children.
  • 2:28 - 2:38
There are over 50,000 deaf children
across the UK, over 90% of whom are
  • 2:38 - 2:46
born to hearing parents with no
    knowledge of sign language.
  • 2:46 - 3:00
Babies start to develop language from birth.
    Early language acquisition is essential
  • 3:00 - 3:09
for a child’s development and wellbeing,
yet access to sign language is limited,
  • 3:09 - 3:17
and the provision is patchy and expensive.
  • 3:17 - 3:24
We believe that offering access to
both sign - and spoken language,
  • 3:24 - 3:35
reduces the risk of deaf children
    becoming language deprived.
  • 3:35 - 3:43
We believe that with the right access
to language, there's no limit to what a
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    deaf child can achieve.
  • 3:47 - 3:52
Meet Lara (not her real name)
  • 3:53 - 4:04
Lara is Deaf and grew up deprived of a
language as her family are all hearing
  • 4:04 - 4:13
can’t sign. She couldn’t follow the
    conversation around the dinner table
  • 4:13 - 4:23
    and struggled with everyday interactions.
The Audiologist advised her parents not
  • 4:23 - 4:34
to introduce and use sign language.
Their education policy stated that use of
  • 4:34 - 4:47
sign language would affect the development
of speech. The recommendation was that
  • 4:47 - 4:55
they should raise her as they
would were she a hearing child.
  • 4:56 - 5:07
Her parents learned of the BDA’s
    Deaf Roots & Pride project,
  • 5:07 - 5:16
from a Teacher of the Deaf, and took
    Lara there. To their amazement,
  • 5:16 - 5:24
    Lara immediately connected with all
the deaf children and picked up quickly
  • 5:24 - 5:34
on BSL. She was so happy in their
    company and her parents realised
  • 5:34 - 5:40
    the Audiologist’s advice didn’t
    meet their daughters’ needs.
  • 5:42 - 5:49
Your role as a BDA Campaign Ambassador
  • 5:50 - 6:00
We need your support to help children
like Lara. This is a vital role to ensure
  • 6:00 - 6:03
