উত্তর ২৪ পরগনার স্বরূপনগর ব্লকের বাংলাদেশ সীমান্তবর্তী আমুদিয়া বাজার এবং নিত্যানন্দকাটি গ্রামের মাঝ দিয়ে প্রবাহিত সোনাই নদী বহু বছর ধরে স্থানীয় বাসিন্দাদের জন্য একটি বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ হয়ে ছিল। আগে একটি বাঁশের সাঁকোই ছিল তাঁদের একমাত্র ভরসা, যা ২০০০ সালে ভেঙে পড়ার পর থেকে যোগাযোগ প্রায় সম্পূর্ণ বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। তারপর থেকে নদী পারাপারের জন্য মানুষকে নৌকার উপর নির্ভর করতে হত—যা ছিল অত্যন্ত ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ ও সময়সাপেক্ষ। জরুরি মুহূর্তে, বিশেষ করে অসুস্থ রোগীদের হাসপাতালে নেওয়ার জন্য ৪ কিলোমিটার ঘুরপথ অবলম্বন করতে হতো, যা প্রায়শই বিপজ্জনক হয়ে উঠত।

এই এলাকার প্রধান জীবিকা কৃষিকাজ হওয়ায় কৃষকরাও দারুণ সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হতেন। ফসল বাজারে পৌঁছাতে অতিরিক্ত সময় ও খরচ হত, ফলে তাঁরা প্রায়শই ন্যায্য মূল্য থেকে বঞ্চিত হতেন।

এই দীর্ঘদিনের দুর্ভোগের অবসান ঘটাতে, ২১ ডিসেম্বর ২০২৪ সালে বালটি নিত্যানন্দকাটি গ্রাম পঞ্চায়েতের উদ্যোগে একটি নতুন সেতু নির্মাণের কাজ শুরু হয়। বর্তমানে সেতুর নির্মাণ সম্পন্ন হয়েছে এবং এটি চালু হওয়ায় স্থানীয় বাসিন্দারা স্বস্তির নিঃশ্বাস ফেলেছেন। কৃষকরা এখন সহজেই ফসল বাজারে পৌঁছে দিচ্ছেন, রোগীদের দ্রুত হাসপাতালে নেওয়া যাচ্ছে, ছাত্রছাত্রীরা নির্বিঘ্নে স্কুলে যেতে পারছে—সার্বিকভাবে মানুষের জীবনযাত্রার মান অনেকটাই উন্নত হয়েছে।

সীমান্তবর্তী এই অঞ্চলে নতুন এই সেতুটি শুধু একটুকরো কংক্রিট নয়—এটি এক নতুন সম্ভাবনার দিশা দেখাচ্ছে।

In the Swarupnagar block of North 24 Parganas, the Sonai River—flowing between the Bangladesh-bordering Amudia Bazar and Nityanandakati village—had long been a major challenge for locals. Once, a bamboo bridge was the only means of crossing, but after its collapse in 2000, connectivity was virtually lost. Since then, residents were forced to depend on boats to cross the river—a risky and time-consuming affair. In emergencies, particularly when transporting patients to hospitals, people had to take a 4-kilometer detour, which at times proved fatal.

Given that agriculture is the primary livelihood in the area, farmers suffered as well. Reaching markets with their produce involved long routes and delays, often causing them to lose out on fair prices.

To end this prolonged suffering, the Balti-Nityanandakati Gram Panchayat initiated the construction of a new bridge on December 21, 2024. Now completed and operational, the bridge has brought immense relief to the community. Farmers can now easily reach markets, patients can be taken to hospitals without delay, and students can go to school without hassle. Overall, the quality of life has significantly improved.

For this border-region community, the bridge is more than just concrete—it’s a gateway to new possibilities.
