Managing the Material Prep for Elementary Art Teachers

  • 0:00 - 0:01
hey there it's Katie Jarvis with
  • 0:01 - 0:04
    managing the mess and I'm a k through 6
  • 0:04 - 0:06
Elementary art teacher in this video I'm
  • 0:06 - 0:07
going to bring you along and show you
  • 0:07 - 0:10
some of the magic and madness that goes
  • 0:10 - 0:12
on when you're prepping art materials
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    for an elementary arts
  • 0:17 - 0:20
class today my kindergarten students are
  • 0:20 - 0:22
going to start on this mouse paint
  • 0:22 - 0:24
project Mouse paint is a book for
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    elementary students about color mixing
  • 0:26 - 0:28
and they're going to mix the colors to
  • 0:28 - 0:30
make the mice that you see there in the
  • 0:30 - 0:31
background so here's what the prep for
  • 0:31 - 0:34
the lesson looks like I've got my
  • 0:34 - 0:36
magenta turquoise and yellow paints out
  • 0:36 - 0:39
those work the best for mixing for me
  • 0:39 - 0:42
mix a dinosaur purple a macaroni and
  • 0:42 - 0:45
cheese orange and a slimy green we're
  • 0:45 - 0:47
using these art uh craft swaps just kind
  • 0:47 - 0:49
of like a Q-tip uh for mixing so we can
  • 0:49 - 0:51
simply just throw those away at the end
  • 0:51 - 0:53
of the lesson and I have a plastic
  • 0:53 - 0:56
container with a lid and this is where
  • 0:56 - 0:58
I'm pre pouring my paint I've poured the
  • 0:58 - 1:01
paint into half of an egg carton so that
  • 1:01 - 1:03
each student can have their own
  • 1:03 - 1:06
opportunity with mixing to fit the whole
  • 1:06 - 1:08
class in this bin I've just put a little
  • 1:08 - 1:10
tray in there so that I can have two
  • 1:10 - 1:13
layers of paint that is all set up and
  • 1:13 - 1:17
ready to go I did pour this yesterday
  • 1:17 - 1:18
after school but it will be good for
  • 1:18 - 1:21
about 24 hours set up like this in those
  • 1:21 - 1:23
paper cartons I have a couple different
  • 1:23 - 1:26
systems that I use for prepping and
  • 1:26 - 1:28
preparing the paint and they all revolve
  • 1:28 - 1:30
around recycled materials so at the
  • 1:30 - 1:32
beginning of the school year I send a
  • 1:32 - 1:34
note out to my families that I'll be
  • 1:34 - 1:36
collecting things like greek yogurt cups
  • 1:36 - 1:38
and egg cartons and they can just send
  • 1:38 - 1:40
them in whenever they have some
  • 1:40 - 1:42
throughout the school year I don't have
  • 1:42 - 1:44
students and staff come in and interrupt
  • 1:44 - 1:46
me when I'm prepping and I'm teaching I
  • 1:46 - 1:48
haven't put them in a container out in
  • 1:48 - 1:51
the hallway and then each afternoon I
  • 1:51 - 1:53
bring these in and then prep them as
  • 1:53 - 1:56
needed so I would cut the lids off of
  • 1:56 - 1:59
the egg cartons and then I sort them by
  • 1:59 - 2:01
type so I collect the the paper ones the
  • 2:01 - 2:03
styrofoam ones and the plastic ones and
  • 2:03 - 2:05
I use each for different things in my
  • 2:05 - 2:09
room for the older kids I would use the
  • 2:09 - 2:11
plastic or styrofoam and I put them in a
  • 2:11 - 2:13
smaller container so they can just carry
  • 2:13 - 2:15
this back to their table and then use
  • 2:15 - 2:18
the paints right out of the container
  • 2:18 - 2:20
and using these Sterilite bins like this
  • 2:20 - 2:23
the paint will last for several weeks I
  • 2:23 - 2:25
would say any project that I'm doing
  • 2:25 - 2:26
even if my classes are all in a
  • 2:26 - 2:30
different space um on a different day
  • 2:30 - 2:32
this will still work for that entire
  • 2:32 - 2:34
project and not dry out another system
  • 2:34 - 2:36
that I use is I will use like these big
  • 2:36 - 2:39
under the bed storage containers and I
  • 2:39 - 2:41
will put a bunch of egg cartons all
  • 2:41 - 2:43
filled up and ready to go inside of
  • 2:43 - 2:45
there for students to use as well so
  • 2:45 - 2:48
they just take the egg carton then right
  • 2:48 - 2:50
to their table to use I wouldn't
  • 2:50 - 2:52
recommend these systems with the younger
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    grades second grade can probably
  • 2:55 - 2:57
handle the egg cartons but Kindergarten
  • 2:57 - 3:00
first, if you teach PreK I would just use
  • 3:00 - 3:02
something like a yogurt cup so that they
  • 3:02 - 3:06
would be using one color at a time and
  • 3:06 - 3:08
that paintbrush would be staying in that
  • 3:08 - 3:10
color so I love the system of putting
  • 3:10 - 3:12
the lids on it just helps the paint to
  • 3:12 - 3:14
last a lot longer and I'm putting
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    different colors inside these Greek
  • 3:15 - 3:17
yogurt cups and then I would have a
  • 3:17 - 3:19
paintbrush in there ready to go if they
  • 3:19 - 3:22
want a new color they're just switching
  • 3:22 - 3:23
yogurt containers and I think that's
  • 3:23 - 3:26
easier for them to see um what's going
  • 3:26 - 3:27
on and keep them organized so that
  • 3:27 - 3:32
    they're not mixing your colors
  • 3:32 - 3:34
for erasers I really just prepped this
  • 3:34 - 3:36
at the beginning of the year I love to
  • 3:36 - 3:39
buy the white erasers that don't leave
  • 3:39 - 3:42
marks on the paper when they erase and I
  • 3:42 - 3:44
recommend that you cut them in half so
  • 3:44 - 3:47
there's a less eraser to be
  • 3:47 - 3:49
destroyed I think you're living on the
  • 3:49 - 3:51
edge if you store them at your tables
  • 3:51 - 3:54
like in table baskets I keep mine in my
  • 3:54 - 3:57
little art Buffet here and they're in
  • 3:57 - 3:59
ice cube trays so at the end of class my
  • 3:59 - 4:01
students know that if any of them are
  • 4:01 - 4:04
missing or they're severely um destroyed
  • 4:04 - 4:07
it counts as a frown for our happy and
  • 4:07 - 4:09
sad board for the class so they really
  • 4:09 - 4:11
monitor each other they're the ones that
  • 4:11 - 4:12
notice oh my goodness we're missing five
  • 4:12 - 4:14
eraser and kind of call that out at the
  • 4:14 - 4:16
end of the class and look around and
  • 4:16 - 4:18
find them the white ones are the same
  • 4:18 - 4:20
color as the floor that's really the
  • 4:20 - 4:22
only downside to this system many of
  • 4:22 - 4:24
these erasers we've had since the
  • 4:24 - 4:27
beginning of the year a recent art
  • 4:27 - 4:30
teacher Discovery are these little white
  • 4:30 - 4:32
pencil caps I think everyone can relate
  • 4:32 - 4:34
that the Erasers on the pencils just are
  • 4:34 - 4:37
not big enough for art classes so what I
  • 4:37 - 4:39
did was get these little white eraser
  • 4:39 - 4:43
caps and I hot glued them to my pencils
  • 4:43 - 4:44
and I did a little bit of a test I had
  • 4:44 - 4:46
somewhere I just placed it on the pencil
  • 4:46 - 4:48
and put them in my pencil cups and
  • 4:48 - 4:50
others where I hot glued them it's
  • 4:50 - 4:52
definitely worth your time to hot glue
  • 4:52 - 4:54
them or Gorilla Glue them onto your
  • 4:54 - 4:56
pencil and again I don't recommend
  • 4:56 - 4:59
storing your pencils at your tables this
  • 4:59 - 5:00
spot here next to to my erasers just
  • 5:00 - 5:03
sort of an extra pencil spot for pencils
  • 5:03 - 5:04
that we might find laying around the
  • 5:04 - 5:07
room but I store my pencils in
  • 5:07 - 5:09
Pennsylvania and then we just pass those
  • 5:09 - 5:12
out as needed and the Eraser system is
  • 5:12 - 5:15
    working really well so
  • 5:16 - 5:19
far I feel as though Clay is the biggest
  • 5:19 - 5:22
mess that we have to manage where I
  • 5:22 - 5:26
store my extra pieces of clay is inside
  • 5:26 - 5:29
of these like Dollar Tree dish pans
  • 5:29 - 5:30
these are great for all sorts of things
  • 5:30 - 5:32
in the art room what I recently
  • 5:32 - 5:34
discovered though is instead of putting
  • 5:34 - 5:37
the clay right into these containers you
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    can
  • 5:39 - 5:43
line your container with a plastic bag
  • 5:43 - 5:45
first so I put it inside of the trash
  • 5:45 - 5:47
bag then we're putting all the scraps of
  • 5:47 - 5:50
our extra clay then you can put wet
  • 5:50 - 5:53
paper towels or spray this and then you
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    take another trash
  • 5:55 - 5:58
bag and you put it inside of there just
  • 5:58 - 6:01
makes the cleaner but the and a little
  • 6:01 - 6:05
bit easier now if I'm preparing slabs I
  • 6:05 - 6:08
do have a secret my clay mats are Dollar
  • 6:08 - 6:11
Tree Cutting Boards these are now two
  • 6:11 - 6:14
for a125 I've had these for more than
  • 6:14 - 6:17
eight years so in between uses I will
  • 6:17 - 6:19
wash these down throw them on the drying
  • 6:19 - 6:22
R to dry and then use them again and
  • 6:22 - 6:24
what I do with these is I can prep these
  • 6:24 - 6:28
several days in advance when I'm cutting
  • 6:28 - 6:32
slabs I'm using this multi-lab cutter
  • 6:32 - 6:34
this is a tool that you need to have I
  • 6:34 - 6:36
don't really have a link for this but a
  • 6:36 - 6:38
lot of the local clay companies will
  • 6:38 - 6:39
sell this just make sure you're
  • 6:39 - 6:42
searching multi slab cutter and lots of
  • 6:42 - 6:43
these little things will come up it's
  • 6:43 - 6:46
only about $50 it's definitely in worth
  • 6:46 - 6:47
    your investment because you're cutting
  • 6:47 - 6:50
all the slabs exactly at the same size
  • 6:50 - 6:52
and you're cutting them very quickly at
  • 6:52 - 6:55
the same time and I will store these in
  • 6:55 - 6:58
the Sterilite bins like a larger one and
  • 6:58 - 7:00
    then put them directly
  • 7:00 - 7:02
on one of those cutting boards so these
  • 7:02 - 7:04
are houses that we're making with
  • 7:04 - 7:06
kindergarten and then I can just stack
  • 7:06 - 7:09
up lots of them and just fill this bin
  • 7:09 - 7:12
as I'm prepping um with all of those and
  • 7:12 - 7:14
then it's easy to just pass them out and
  • 7:14 - 7:17
they already have then a mat to work off
  • 7:17 - 7:21
of if I'm cutting clay for Pinch pots or
  • 7:21 - 7:23
coil pots I'm just using the regular
  • 7:23 - 7:25
clay cutting tool which just has two
  • 7:25 - 7:27
little wooden handles and a little wire
  • 7:27 - 7:30
going across but I think about the shape
  • 7:30 - 7:32
that I'm going to cut for a pinch pot
  • 7:32 - 7:34
I'm just cutting little squares of clay
  • 7:34 - 7:36
but when I'm doing coil students are
  • 7:36 - 7:39
going to need that long coil shape so I
  • 7:39 - 7:42
will cut the clay into what I call fish
  • 7:42 - 7:46
sticks so it's long skinny rectangles
  • 7:46 - 7:48
then when they get the little fish stick
  • 7:48 - 7:51
they squeeze it and then they start to
  • 7:51 - 7:53
roll so they're able to move through the
  • 7:53 - 7:54
process faster and have a lot more
  • 7:54 - 7:56
success than having them start off with
  • 7:56 - 8:00
a little ball or a little square of clay
  • 8:00 - 8:02
when you're prepping clay one thing that
  • 8:02 - 8:04
I think you don't need to worry about at
  • 8:04 - 8:06
this Elementary level is wedging the
  • 8:06 - 8:08
clay I know when I was taught this in
  • 8:08 - 8:10
college this was a huge deal we were
  • 8:10 - 8:13
    worried about air
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    bubbles I don't know this doesn't seem
  • 8:15 - 8:17
to be an issue for me I get the clay
  • 8:17 - 8:19
it's already wedged my students use it
  • 8:19 - 8:21
even if my students are using the
  • 8:21 - 8:23
leftover scraps I've never had trouble
  • 8:23 - 8:26
I've never once wedged the clay I think
  • 8:26 - 8:29
anything to do with explosions has to do
  • 8:29 - 8:31
with with drying time now if you're
  • 8:31 - 8:34
looking for some clay tips and tricks or
  • 8:34 - 8:36
how to use a kiln I've got separate
  • 8:36 - 8:38
videos about that I have over
  • 8:38 - 8:42
120 videos about art room management so
  • 8:42 - 8:44
make sure that you like this video And
  • 8:44 - 8:46
subscribe so you don't miss out on any
  • 8:46 - 8:48
    of
  • 8:49 - 8:51
those one thing that I prep for my
  • 8:51 - 8:55
students before they come to Art is name
  • 8:55 - 8:57
tag labels so I have a label in my
  • 8:57 - 9:00
computer that I print out for each class
  • 9:00 - 9:02
it has each student's name the seat
  • 9:02 - 9:04
number that they sit at their classroom
  • 9:04 - 9:07
teacher and then I use this to label all
  • 9:07 - 9:09
of their artwork so once I get these
  • 9:09 - 9:11
organized I'm printing out nine of them
  • 9:11 - 9:14
I have enough for the whole quarter each
  • 9:14 - 9:16
quarter I'll kind of Review Who's moved
  • 9:16 - 9:19
away who's moved in and I will make some
  • 9:19 - 9:22
adjustments but this helps me so much to
  • 9:22 - 9:25
keep organized because I can prep the
  • 9:25 - 9:27
artwork when I take it off the drying
  • 9:27 - 9:30
rack I can put it in seat number order
  • 9:30 - 9:34
so I can pass these out in seconds it is
  • 9:34 - 9:37
magical I also don't have any noname
  • 9:37 - 9:39
papers because anybody that still has a
  • 9:39 - 9:41
name tag here hasn't put their name on
  • 9:41 - 9:44
their work if someone is absent I'll
  • 9:44 - 9:46
just take a little marker I'll write an
  • 9:46 - 9:48
A and I'll save a paper or the materials
  • 9:48 - 9:51
that we're using that day for the absent
  • 9:51 - 9:53
students but I have it marked then that
  • 9:53 - 9:55
when I go to grade that artwork I can
  • 9:55 - 9:57
see right there on their name tag that
  • 9:57 - 9:59
they were absent another thing that I'm
  • 9:59 - 10:01
might mark on these is if they got
  • 10:01 - 10:04
    teacher assistance to complete the
  • 10:04 - 10:06
project or if they were assisted by
  • 10:06 - 10:08
another student to complete the work I'd
  • 10:08 - 10:09
want to note that just with a little
  • 10:09 - 10:11
code for myself so I know what to do
  • 10:11 - 10:14
with that artwork when I'm grading it
  • 10:14 - 10:16
now another thing that I discovered I
  • 10:16 - 10:18
don't know why I resisted this so long
  • 10:18 - 10:20
because I saw the classroom teachers did
  • 10:20 - 10:22
    this um I started
  • 10:22 - 10:25
using these little laminated pouches and
  • 10:25 - 10:28
what I did was I stuck the name tag
  • 10:28 - 10:31
labels in inside there and then used an
  • 10:31 - 10:33
expo marker to mark off I was taking
  • 10:33 - 10:36
photos of sixth graders okay like who
  • 10:36 - 10:38
still needs a photo and I was able to
  • 10:38 - 10:40
mark that off then simply just wipe this
  • 10:40 - 10:42
off and use it again and then I got even
  • 10:42 - 10:45
smarter I use my seating chart is a
  • 10:45 - 10:47
little folder inside of the folder this
  • 10:47 - 10:51
is where I would keep um all of their
  • 10:51 - 10:53
name tag labels for the whole quarter I
  • 10:53 - 10:55
have a little log where I keep track of
  • 10:55 - 10:57
behaviors but the outside is my seating
  • 10:57 - 11:01
chart so I stuck that into this little
  • 11:01 - 11:03
pouch and this is just a dry erased
  • 11:03 - 11:05
pouch from the Dollar Tree and then I
  • 11:05 - 11:07
could go around and grade students and
  • 11:07 - 11:10
Mark it down directly on the seating
  • 11:10 - 11:13
chart because I don't know about you but
  • 11:13 - 11:14
last quarter I got to the end of the
  • 11:14 - 11:17
quarter and I was just so overwhelmed
  • 11:17 - 11:21
with how many things that I had to grade
  • 11:21 - 11:23
and I do think a better system is
  • 11:23 - 11:25
walking around seeing the students in
  • 11:25 - 11:27
action talking with them and asking them
  • 11:27 - 11:29
    questions about their artwork speaking
  • 11:29 - 11:32
of talking connecting with your students
  • 11:32 - 11:34
when I'm passing out these name tag
  • 11:34 - 11:37
labels often I will pass them out myself
  • 11:37 - 11:39
um for upper grades occasionally I will
  • 11:39 - 11:42
take these clip them to a chair and then
  • 11:42 - 11:44
have students like come up and take an
  • 11:44 - 11:46
exit ticket put their name on the exit
  • 11:46 - 11:48
ticket with the sticker and then go back
  • 11:48 - 11:50
to their seats to complete it but I will
  • 11:50 - 11:53
go around and pass these out very often
  • 11:53 - 11:56
because that way I am stopping and
  • 11:56 - 11:59
checking in with each student I
  • 11:59 - 12:02
otherwise don't think I would slow down
  • 12:02 - 12:05
enough to do this but this is making me
  • 12:05 - 12:09
stop and also is connecting their name
  • 12:09 - 12:12
in my brain to that cute little face so
  • 12:12 - 12:13
it's a great way to learn your students
  • 12:13 - 12:16
names my artwork then is already prepped
  • 12:16 - 12:20
and ready for hallway displays and for
  • 12:20 - 12:22
art shows so it's a great system to keep
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    yourself
  • 12:24 - 12:27
organized I don't just use the labels
  • 12:27 - 12:29
for paintings and drawings but I use
  • 12:29 - 12:32
them for anything that we need to label
  • 12:32 - 12:34
in the classroom when we're doing clay
  • 12:34 - 12:36
my fourth graders do a coil pot where
  • 12:36 - 12:39
they build it within these bowls we of
  • 12:39 - 12:41
course remove this before we fire it but
  • 12:41 - 12:44
I will take a name tag label and have
  • 12:44 - 12:46
this already prepped and on the bowls we
  • 12:46 - 12:48
can just pass these out when we start to
  • 12:48 - 12:51
do the clay project after the clay dries
  • 12:51 - 12:54
then I peel off this paper bowl and I
  • 12:54 - 12:57
can see the student name to etch it into
  • 12:57 - 12:59
the clay my kindergarten is are
  • 12:59 - 13:02
currently making clay houses and it's
  • 13:02 - 13:05
easier for them to build on a little
  • 13:05 - 13:07
tray especially for the glazing part
  • 13:07 - 13:10
because I do glazing as centers students
  • 13:10 - 13:12
move around the room and carrying it on
  • 13:12 - 13:14
a tray means that their Clay is less
  • 13:14 - 13:17
likely to break so I take name tag
  • 13:17 - 13:20
labels again label those before the
  • 13:20 - 13:22
students come in so those are super easy
  • 13:22 - 13:24
to match up with their clay and to pass
  • 13:24 - 13:27
out my first graders made animal mask I
  • 13:27 - 13:29
have this lesson over and Teachers Pay
  • 13:29 - 13:31
te where I taught them threedimensional
  • 13:31 - 13:33
paper techniques and then they used them
  • 13:33 - 13:36
on a simple mask form that I hot glued
  • 13:36 - 13:40
to a piece of paper again take a name
  • 13:40 - 13:42
tag I stick it right on the back there
  • 13:42 - 13:45
and then everything is labeled when we
  • 13:45 - 13:48
have pieces like for this mask we had
  • 13:48 - 13:49
    all these different little paper
  • 13:49 - 13:52
techniques the first day of this lesson
  • 13:52 - 13:54
was just an exploring centers day so
  • 13:54 - 13:57
every single table had a different paper
  • 13:57 - 14:00
technique at the table and they practice
  • 14:00 - 14:03
making Fringe making a cone and they put
  • 14:03 - 14:06
it inside of a bag before they started
  • 14:06 - 14:08
on the project we labeled a little
  • 14:08 - 14:11
Ziploc bag for everyone with their name
  • 14:11 - 14:15
I do this for clay projects and anything
  • 14:15 - 14:18
that can help me be more organized so
  • 14:18 - 14:19
that I'm not losing student artwork and
  • 14:19 - 14:23
I'm not using my time to find missing
  • 14:23 - 14:26
things or figure out where someone's is
  • 14:26 - 14:29
were they absent everything is clearly
  • 14:29 - 14:31
marked and it just makes my job easier
  • 14:31 - 14:35
to be a little bit extra on the
  • 14:38 - 14:40
organization as art teachers a lot of
  • 14:40 - 14:42
the prep that we do is with paper the
  • 14:42 - 14:46
first of which is making copies now make
  • 14:46 - 14:48
sure that you're setting aside enough
  • 14:48 - 14:50
time in your schedule to make all your
  • 14:50 - 14:52
copies so you're not running to the copy
  • 14:52 - 14:56
machine on Monday to make 25 copies of
  • 14:56 - 14:57
mouse paint and oh my goodness on
  • 14:57 - 14:59
Wednesday I have first grade again I'm
  • 14:59 - 15:02
making 25 more copies of mouse paint set
  • 15:02 - 15:03
aside enough time you can copy for it
  • 15:03 - 15:06
the entire grade level make some extras
  • 15:06 - 15:11
because you never know and copy for one
  • 15:11 - 15:15
extra class so I have four first grade
  • 15:15 - 15:18
classes I would make enough copies for
  • 15:18 - 15:21
five first grade classes that way I have
  • 15:21 - 15:24
you know one class of extra that I can
  • 15:24 - 15:26
file away in my filing cabinet so when I
  • 15:26 - 15:29
come to this mouse paint lesson next
  • 15:29 - 15:31
year if I'm caught off guard and I want
  • 15:31 - 15:33
to start it one day and I don't have
  • 15:33 - 15:36
time to make the copies I have enough
  • 15:36 - 15:39
for one day to get me going so this is a
  • 15:39 - 15:41
real time saer something that really
  • 15:41 - 15:44
gives me a lot less stress just knowing
  • 15:44 - 15:46
that that is filed away for me should I
  • 15:46 - 15:49
decide on a whim I'm doing Mouse paint
  • 15:49 - 15:52
today it is ready to roll now when I'm
  • 15:52 - 15:54
making copies of things that resources
  • 15:54 - 15:57
that I'm going to use over and over I
  • 15:57 - 15:59
will laminate them and I like to use
  • 15:59 - 16:01
my personal laminator it's one of my
  • 16:01 - 16:03
favorite uh little teacher things that
  • 16:03 - 16:04
I've bought for myself because it comes
  • 16:04 - 16:06
    with these little pouches they're
  • 16:06 - 16:08
exactly the size of a sheet of paper
  • 16:08 - 16:10
comes in smaller sizes or bigger sizes
  • 16:10 - 16:12
for construction paper too but it's
  • 16:12 - 16:14
great for handouts you just slide that
  • 16:14 - 16:16
through your laminator it melts the
  • 16:16 - 16:18
pouch and you don't have to do any
  • 16:18 - 16:20
cutting and your handouts are ready to
  • 16:20 - 16:22
go for your students of course now that
  • 16:22 - 16:24
things are laminated it will literally
  • 16:24 - 16:28
last you your entire career um my
  • 16:28 - 16:31
favorite uh paper trick for prepping is
  • 16:31 - 16:34
    copying on construction paper for
  • 16:34 - 16:36
    construction paper my kindergarteners do
  • 16:36 - 16:38
a texture painting with the story
  • 16:38 - 16:41
corduroy and I copy this onto
  • 16:41 - 16:44
    construction paper yes 12 by8
  • 16:44 - 16:46
construction paper fits in your copy
  • 16:46 - 16:49
machine this is actually a freebie if
  • 16:49 - 16:51
you want this little template over on my
  • 16:51 - 16:54
Teachers Pay Teachers um I do a similar
  • 16:54 - 16:56
project with the first graders they each
  • 16:56 - 16:58
pick a different winter animal and we
  • 16:58 - 16:59
    paint a texture
  • 16:59 - 17:01
so I take the animals and I copy
  • 17:01 - 17:03
different animals that they can choose
  • 17:03 - 17:06
from onto the construction paper when my
  • 17:06 - 17:08
    older students are painting we're
  • 17:08 - 17:10
    studying the different painting
  • 17:10 - 17:12
techniques um this is something that I
  • 17:12 - 17:15
sell on teachers p teachers I copy it on
  • 17:15 - 17:17
to construction paper and then students
  • 17:17 - 17:19
test out these painting techniques and
  • 17:19 - 17:21
try them out and then when we jump into
  • 17:21 - 17:24
a painting they use this as a menu which
  • 17:24 - 17:25
of these techniques that they learn do
  • 17:25 - 17:28
they want to use within the picture I
  • 17:28 - 17:30
have them choose like five that they're
  • 17:30 - 17:33
going to use in the real painting at the
  • 17:33 - 17:35
end for a reflection and an exit ticket
  • 17:35 - 17:38
    they're identifying which techniques did
  • 17:38 - 17:40
they use and where did they use them
  • 17:40 - 17:41
within their painting so that's an
  • 17:41 - 17:44
excellent way to use construction paper
  • 17:44 - 17:46
one of my all-time favorites is having
  • 17:46 - 17:49
um this for weaving looms so I've made a
  • 17:49 - 17:52
little template on construction paper um
  • 17:52 - 17:54
it's just construction paper folded in
  • 17:54 - 17:55
half and you can see that I've only
  • 17:55 - 17:58
Drawn Lines on half of it I've numbered
  • 17:58 - 18:00
this so students can go under over under
  • 18:00 - 18:02
over and look at those numbers and I've
  • 18:02 - 18:04
created a stop line where the students
  • 18:04 - 18:07
are to stop cutting to create their Loom
  • 18:07 - 18:11
I will copy these on to different colors
  • 18:11 - 18:12
of construction paper to make our looms
  • 18:12 - 18:16
really fun and then what the students do
  • 18:16 - 18:18
is they just cut cut cut stop cut cut
  • 18:18 - 18:20
cut stop cut cut cut stop cut cut cut
  • 18:20 - 18:24
Stop open this up and then they have a
  • 18:24 - 18:27
paper weaving loom so the prep for me is
  • 18:27 - 18:29
that I do have to copy these ahead aheed
  • 18:29 - 18:31
time and I do need to fold them for my
  • 18:31 - 18:33
    students for them to be
  • 18:33 - 18:36
successful when it comes to prepping
  • 18:36 - 18:38
construction paper I have learned to
  • 18:38 - 18:42
limit myself to certain sizes so I will
  • 18:42 - 18:44
pre-cut these sizes and then just have
  • 18:44 - 18:47
them ready to go at any time so for
  • 18:47 - 18:49
    squares I like to do 12 by 12 that's a
  • 18:49 - 18:52
great background size I will have this
  • 18:52 - 18:54
ready in all the colors so when I come
  • 18:54 - 18:56
up with a project and I need that it is
  • 18:56 - 18:59
ready to go another size that I prep is
  • 18:59 - 19:03
3x3 this could be House's Windows it
  • 19:03 - 19:06
could be origami works for both and it's
  • 19:06 - 19:09
ready to roll for any scraps that I have
  • 19:09 - 19:12
or I will prep this at like a 4X 6 in
  • 19:12 - 19:15
size I will put them in these file
  • 19:15 - 19:17
folding bins and there are folders in
  • 19:17 - 19:19
here I laminated a little construction
  • 19:19 - 19:21
paper piece on there so they can see
  • 19:21 - 19:23
what color goes where but this would be
  • 19:23 - 19:25
filled and ready to go at all times so
  • 19:25 - 19:28
if I decided to do a collage project
  • 19:28 - 19:29
    tomorrow
  • 19:29 - 19:31
it is ready to roll another size that I
  • 19:31 - 19:34
will do is I will cut the paper in half
  • 19:34 - 19:37
and then I will have this ready to go in
  • 19:37 - 19:38
like these magazine holders I think this
  • 19:38 - 19:41
is from Ikea and then it's simply just
  • 19:41 - 19:44
in a paper copy box so that could be
  • 19:44 - 19:46
used for my animal mask project or any
  • 19:46 - 19:48
other projects where I need that same
  • 19:48 - 19:52
size of paper another tip with this is
  • 19:52 - 19:52
if you're going to be doing
  • 19:52 - 19:54
    self-portraits for collages which I
  • 19:54 - 19:58
often do my students love pattern paper
  • 19:58 - 20:01
so I go to Michaels definitely with a
  • 20:01 - 20:03
coupon use your Tut your discount look
  • 20:03 - 20:05
in the clearance section but I look for
  • 20:05 - 20:08
patterned paper and then I cut it up
  • 20:08 - 20:10
really small like 4x6 and I'll put it
  • 20:10 - 20:13
all in a little bin already prepped and
  • 20:13 - 20:15
ready so that if we're doing collages I
  • 20:15 - 20:18
can just easily pull this out for my
  • 20:18 - 20:21
students to use this school year I have
  • 20:21 - 20:24
a lot of backto back classes and one of
  • 20:24 - 20:27
the ways that I am surviving is I am
  • 20:27 - 20:30
covering my tables and what I found is
  • 20:30 - 20:33
is this takes a lot of time so I wipe
  • 20:33 - 20:36
off my tables I let them dry and then I
  • 20:36 - 20:39
put the paper on and what I've done is I
  • 20:39 - 20:41
take a little bit of time and I prep the
  • 20:41 - 20:43
paper ahead of time so I pre-cut it I
  • 20:43 - 20:45
count out how many I need and then I put
  • 20:45 - 20:47
a little bit of painters tape on it so I
  • 20:47 - 20:49
have a bunch of packs like these sitting
  • 20:49 - 20:51
in the corner of my room just ready to
  • 20:51 - 20:54
go now because of the back to backto
  • 20:54 - 20:56
back situation there are times when I
  • 20:56 - 20:58
double cover the tables so I put this
  • 20:58 - 21:01
paper underneath and I tape it down um
  • 21:01 - 21:03
and I will then put this plastic
  • 21:03 - 21:05
tablecloth it's like a cut to size
  • 21:05 - 21:08
plastic tablecloth um that we found from
  • 21:08 - 21:10
Amazon it works like Saran Wrap there's
  • 21:10 - 21:13
a little cutter inside of there so you
  • 21:13 - 21:14
just simply measure out how much you
  • 21:14 - 21:17
need and this slices across and cuts the
  • 21:17 - 21:19
size that you would need and then I
  • 21:19 - 21:22
would tape this down on top of the paper
  • 21:22 - 21:24
I've taught my students in all my upper
  • 21:24 - 21:27
grades on how to gently remove the tape
  • 21:27 - 21:30
and make a burrito keeping all the
  • 21:30 - 21:31
toppings the paints and the scraps and
  • 21:31 - 21:34
things like that inside and then
  • 21:34 - 21:36
disposing of this in the trash so it's a
  • 21:36 - 21:39
very fast way for us to clean up and
  • 21:39 - 21:41
it's a good way for me to survive those
  • 21:41 - 21:43
backtack classes if you enjoyed this
  • 21:43 - 21:45
video seeing a little bit of behind the
  • 21:45 - 21:47
scenes art teacher prep and you'd like
  • 21:47 - 21:50
to see more make sure that you like this
  • 21:50 - 21:52
video an area that I didn't cover that
  • 21:52 - 21:54
I'd love to in future videos is doing
  • 21:54 - 21:56
how do I prep the yarn and the weaving
  • 21:56 - 21:58
and the sewing projects um so if you
  • 21:58 - 22:00
like to see that make sure you hit that
  • 22:00 - 22:03
like button I'll see you in my next
  • 22:08 - 22:11
    video
