Not Synced
CONTENT CREATOR: Next, we'll be answering
one of the weekend's biggest questions:
-
Not Synced
Who has the nicest coat?
Young Scar or Shadow the Hedgehog?
-
Not Synced
Let's begin with sheen.
-
Not Synced
KYLE: The Game Awards 2024
happened last week
-
Not Synced
and there were surprising winners
and funny speeches
-
Not Synced
and touching speeches.
But,
-
Not Synced
thing is, nobody cares about those things.
Get a clue.
-
Not Synced
Above all else, The Game Awards 2024 had
trailers, better trailers than ever before.
-
Not Synced
So let's talk about those.
-
Not Synced
If you told me a week ago The Witcher IV
would be in The Game Awards, I'd say,
-
Not Synced
"Okay, that will obviously be
the biggest trailer of the show."
-
Not Synced
And if we're going by YouTube views,
I'm not wrong about that.
-
Not Synced
But I guess beyond the confirmation that
Ciri will be the main playable character,
-
Not Synced
I don't feel like this trailer left a
massive impact on the public imagination.
-
Not Synced
It's a different person, sure, but
she's mostly still doing Witcher stuff.
-
Not Synced
Here we go, drinking potions
so she can do slightly more damage.
-
Not Synced
I'm just saying, as a reveal trailer,
-
Not Synced
it doesn't provide a lot to chew on
for the next 2 or 3 years.
-
Not Synced
Or 4.
-
Not Synced
Or 5.
-
Not Synced
Or six.
[laugh]
-
Not Synced
My favorite trailer for the show is for
Fumito Ueda's untitled Project Robot.
-
Not Synced
And what I love about it
is just how tangible it feels.
-
Not Synced
It's clear in the opening seconds
-
Not Synced
that you're watching someone
control a video game character.
-
Not Synced
But I do-- I can acknowledge that
it's kind of a low-key announcement.
-
Not Synced
Maybe some of that Ueda allure has worn off
in the years since The Last Guardian
-
Not Synced
but I do believe someday
people will come to realize
-
Not Synced
that this WAS the greatest game shown.
-
Not Synced
Until then, I can understand that 150-something
million people just don't get it yet.
-
Not Synced
After all, the rocket boosters
are the robot's ears
-
Not Synced
and that just looks silly.
-
Not Synced
Unlikely sequels for:
-
Not Synced
were announced.
But, in my opinion,
-
Not Synced
the biggest trailer of the show
belonged to a brand-new franchise:
-
Not Synced
And I guess we can't say
it's a new IP starting from nothing.
-
Not Synced
It from the studio who brought you:
-
Not Synced
Naughty Dog.
But
-
Not Synced
it's still cool to see a brand new thing
like this at this scale
-
Not Synced
at a time when it is riskier to do
than ever.
-
Not Synced
So I was rewatching the reveal trailer a lot
and it kind hit me how similar it actually is to
-
Not Synced
Concord, and not in the way that the
YouTube comments would suggest.
-
Not Synced
But it belongs in this strangely specific
sub-genre of:
-
Not Synced
'Cause, you know, it's hard for
normal people like you and me
-
Not Synced
to imagine ourselves
being space travelers.
-
Not Synced
But it feels more grounded when we
see things that we're familiar with
-
Not Synced
like cheeseburgers and
-
Not Synced
sandwiches
-
Not Synced
or soda cups.
"Whoa, that's what I drink out of."
-
Not Synced
So then I was watching
that Starfield reveal trailer
-
Not Synced
and it's actually even more similar
to the Intergalactic trailer.
-
Not Synced
There's a lot of shots in common.
-
Not Synced
Starfield.
-
Not Synced
Intergalactic.
-
Not Synced
Yeah, you got this
and you got that.
-
Not Synced
You got this.
-
Not Synced
You got that.
-
Not Synced
Flippin' switches,
flippin' switches.
-
Not Synced
Boosters on.
Boosters on.
-
Not Synced
And in putting them side-by-side,
-
Not Synced
you do begin to appreciate the
differences between the two approaches.
-
Not Synced
So here they are:
-
Not Synced
First, probably most obviously:
-
Not Synced
Starfield introduces you.
You are special.
-
Not Synced
You found the key to unlocking everything.
-
Not Synced
STARFIELD VO: What you'd found,
it's the key to unlocking
-
Not Synced
[inhale] everything.
-
Not Synced
KYLE: Intergalactic introduces:
-
Not Synced
Let me know of that's pronounced Moon,
which would be cool and funny.
-
Not Synced
But for now, I'm going to presume it's Munn.
-
Not Synced
In this game, that's-- You're--
That's you.
-
Not Synced
You are so badass and
you're the boss.
-
Not Synced
AJ: There, you're the boss.
-
Not Synced
KYLE: Obviously, two very different
choices and, you know, like,
-
Not Synced
in a Bethesda game,
you're going to be a created character
-
Not Synced
so the approaches are inherently different.
Neither is the right way to go.
-
Not Synced
But I am just-- I'm super impressed
by the facial animation.
-
Not Synced
Maybe it's because I spent too much time
playing Star Wars Outlaws
-
Not Synced
[HONK] this year.
But I was, like, studying this shift
-
Not Synced
from fearful apprehension
-
Not Synced
to space
-
Not Synced
to this almost darkly focused game face.
-
Not Synced
You're lookin' at the same thing
I'm lookin' at.
-
Not Synced
Maybe that's not impressive to you
but to me, that's just animators showing off.
-
Not Synced
Also, the eye patch was a good call.
-
Not Synced
An eye patch is like a narrative gimme,
makes anyone more interesting.
-
Not Synced
So Starfield referred to their look as
NASA punk.
-
Not Synced
ISTVAN PELY: We've been referring
to this approach as NASA punk.
-
Not Synced
This means a design language where
the tech is advanced yet
-
Not Synced
still looks grounded and relatable.
-
Not Synced
KYLE: And I guess we have the
advantage of hindsight on this one
-
Not Synced
but I have to say,
NASA punk didn't really resonate.
-
Not Synced
Hard to look at Starfield's spacecraft
and say, "Oh yeah, that is definitely Starfield."
-
Not Synced
Meanwhile, I'd say the
