CONTENT CREATOR: Next, we'll be answering
one of the weekend's biggest questions:
-
Not Synced
Who has the nicest coat?
Young Scar or Shadow the Hedgehog?
-
Not Synced
Let's begin with sheen.
-
Not Synced
KYLE: The Game Awards 2024
happened last week
-
Not Synced
and there were surprising winners
and funny speeches
-
Not Synced
and touching speeches.
But,
-
Not Synced
thing is, nobody cares about those things.
Get a clue.
-
Not Synced
Above all else, The Game Awards 2024 had
trailers, better trailers than ever before.
-
Not Synced
So let's talk about those.
-
Not Synced
If you told me a week ago The Witcher IV
would be in The Game Awards, I'd say,
-
Not Synced
"Okay, that will obviously be
the biggest trailer of the show."
-
Not Synced
And if we're going by YouTube views,
I'm not wrong about that.
-
Not Synced
But I guess beyond the confirmation that
Ciri will be the main playable character,
-
Not Synced
I don't feel like this trailer left a
massive impact on the public imagination.
-
Not Synced
It's a different person, sure, but
she's mostly still doing Witcher stuff.
-
Not Synced
Here we go, drinking potions
so she can do slightly more damage.
-
Not Synced
I'm just saying, as a reveal trailer,
-
Not Synced
it doesn't provide a lot to chew on
for the next 2 or 3 years.
-
Not Synced
Or 4.
-
Not Synced
Or 5.
-
Not Synced
Or six.
[laugh]
-
Not Synced
My favorite trailer for the show is for
Fumito Ueda's untitled Project Robot.
-
Not Synced
And what I love about it
is just how tangible it feels.
-
Not Synced
It's clear in the opening seconds
-
Not Synced
that you're watching someone
control a video game character.
-
Not Synced
But I do-- I can acknowledge that
it's kind of a low-key announcement.
-
Not Synced
Maybe some of that Ueda allure has worn off
in the years since The Last Guardian
-
Not Synced
but I do believe someday
people will come to realize
-
Not Synced
that this WAS the greatest game shown.
-
Not Synced
Until then, I can understand that 150-something
million people just don't get it yet.
-
Not Synced
After all, the rocket boosters
are the robot's ears
-
Not Synced
and that just looks silly.
-
Not Synced
Unlikely sequels for:
-
Not Synced
were announced.
But, in my opinion,
-
Not Synced
the biggest trailer of the show
belonged to a brand-new franchise:
-
Not Synced
And I guess we can't say
it's a new IP starting from nothing.
-
Not Synced
It from the studio who brought you:
-
Not Synced
Naughty Dog.
But
-
Not Synced
it's still cool to see a brand new thing
like this at this scale
-
Not Synced
at a time when it is riskier to do
than ever.
-
Not Synced
So I was rewatching the reveal trailer a lot
and it kind hit me how similar it actually is to
-
Not Synced
Concord, and not in the way that the
YouTube comments would suggest.
-
Not Synced
But it belongs in this strangely specific
sub-genre of:
-
Not Synced
'Cause, you know, it's hard for
normal people like you and me
-
Not Synced
to imagine ourselves
being space travelers.
-
Not Synced
But it feels more grounded when we
see things that we're familiar with
-
Not Synced
like cheeseburgers and
-
Not Synced
sandwiches
-
Not Synced
or soda cups.
"Whoa, that's what I drink out of."
-
Not Synced
So then I was watching
that Starfield reveal trailer
-
Not Synced
and it's actually even more similar
to the Intergalactic trailer.
-
Not Synced
There's a lot of shots in common.
-
Not Synced
Starfield.
-
Not Synced
Intergalactic.
-
Not Synced
Yeah, you got this
and you got that.
-
Not Synced
You got this.
-
Not Synced
You got that.
-
Not Synced
Flippin' switches,
flippin' switches.
-
Not Synced
Boosters on.
Boosters on.
-
Not Synced
And in putting them side-by-side,
-
Not Synced
you do begin to appreciate the
differences between the two approaches.
-
Not Synced
So here they are:
-
Not Synced
First, probably most obviously:
-
Not Synced
Starfield introduces you.
You are special.
-
Not Synced
You found the key to unlocking everything.
-
Not Synced
STARFIELD VO: What you'd found,
it's the key to unlocking
-
Not Synced
[inhale] everything.
-
Not Synced
KYLE: Intergalactic introduces:
-
Not Synced
Let me know of that's pronounced Moon,
which would be cool and funny.
-
Not Synced
But for now, I'm going to presume it's Munn.
-
Not Synced
In this game, that's-- You're--
That's you.
-
Not Synced
You are so badass and
you're the boss.
-
Not Synced
AJ: There, you're the boss.
-
Not Synced
KYLE: Obviously, two very different
choices and, you know, like,
-
Not Synced
in a Bethesda game,
you're going to be a created character
-
Not Synced
so the approaches are inherently different.
Neither is the right way to go.
-
Not Synced
But I am just-- I'm super impressed
by the facial animation.
-
Not Synced
Maybe it's because I spent too much time
playing Star Wars Outlaws
-
Not Synced
[HONK] this year.
But I was, like, studying this shift
-
Not Synced
from fearful apprehension
-
Not Synced
to space
-
Not Synced
to this almost darkly focused game face.
-
Not Synced
You're lookin' at the same thing
I'm lookin' at.
-
Not Synced
Maybe that's not impressive to you
but to me, that's just animators showing off.
-
Not Synced
Also, the eye patch was a good call.
-
Not Synced
An eye patch is like a narrative gimme,
makes anyone more interesting.
-
Not Synced
So Starfield referred to their look as
NASA punk.
-
Not Synced
ISTVAN PELY: We've been referring
to this approach as NASA punk.
-
Not Synced
This means a design language where
the tech is advanced yet
-
Not Synced
still looks grounded and relatable.
-
Not Synced
KYLE: And I guess we have the
advantage of hindsight on this one
-
Not Synced
but I have to say,
NASA punk didn't really resonate.
-
Not Synced
Hard to look at Starfield's spacecraft
and say, "Oh yeah, that is definitely Starfield."
-
Not Synced
Meanwhile, I'd say the most standout
aspect of Intergalactic
-
Not Synced
is how well it's nailed down its aesthetic,
which is 80s sci-fi cool.
-
Not Synced
One of the first things your eyes
settle on in the Intergalactic trailer
-
Not Synced
is the Porsche logo
on the back of this cool spaceship.
-
Not Synced
Now, your media training up to this point
has probably led you to believe that
-
Not Synced
anytime you see a recognizable brand
in a movie or TV show or video game,
-
Not Synced
that they paid to be there.
Pizza Hut paid to have the Ninja Turtles eat them.
-
Not Synced
SPLINTER: Of course, you've all
tasted the five-cheese pizza.
-
Not Synced
But this...
-
Not Synced
KYLE: I don't think it worked
that way this time.
-
Not Synced
To be frank with you, I think Porsche
was approached because it's cool.
-
Not Synced
And, most importantly, cool in the 80s.
-
Not Synced
Adidas?
-
Not Synced
Cool in the 80s.
-
Not Synced
Sony?
-
Not Synced
Incidentally, cool in the 80s.
-
Not Synced
So this kind of cool, 80s vision of an
alternate future that couldn't possibly be
-
Not Synced
but seems like a nod to the movies
that these developers clearly loved,
-
Not Synced
it's a cleanly defined aesthetic.
-
Not Synced
And also-- I do feel like
this maybe a little unfair.
-
Not Synced
I feel like a lot of game studios couldn't
get a deal like that, you know what I mean?
-
Not Synced
I'm imagining, like, a Porsche executive,
even somebody at marketing,
-
Not Synced
getting a phone call from a game designer
and they say, "No. No.
-
Not Synced
Is it a car game?
No. No."
-
Not Synced
But then you have,
-
Not Synced
"Neil Druckmann from HBO?
Do you know the HBO series The Last of Us?"
-
Not Synced
And they say, "HBO, you say?
-
Not Synced
Let him in.
Let's talk.
-
Not Synced
I have HBO."
[laugh]
-
Not Synced
Now, there is one aspect of Intergalactic's
aesthetic that I think is plainly weak.
-
Not Synced
And if you read through
300 negative YouTube comments,
-
Not Synced
it'll drive you crazy because
none of them even acknowledge this,
-
Not Synced
the actual thing that's wrong with the game.
-
Not Synced
This robot enemy is kind of boring.
It's kind of bland, compartively.
-
Not Synced
Game designers, you know this.
-
Not Synced
If you want to launch a franchise,
-
Not Synced
the design of your baddies
is just as important
-
Not Synced
as the design of your main characters.
-
Not Synced
It's why Borderlands
is so attached to this stupid mask.
-
Not Synced
It's the one thing everyone recognizes.
-
Not Synced
So we all know
it's gonna be a long, long time
-
Not Synced
until Intergalactic
is ready to be released.
-
Not Synced
There is, quite frankly,
plenty of time to fix that robot.
-
Not Synced
Let me give you a few recommendations.
-
Not Synced
Red eyes are played out.
-
Not Synced
Of all the glowing eye colors
in the imagined universe,
-
Not Synced
how are you gonna go and pick red again?
I'm gonna recommend
-
Not Synced
purple eye. Think about that.
You could own purple eyes.
-
Not Synced
Next, I can't explain this but,
-
Not Synced
I really think it would be more fun to
chop up that robot if it had a mouth.
-
Not Synced
See?
Now I really wanna fight this guy.
-
Not Synced
Fuck this robot.
-
Not Synced
And finally, it needs
a defining characteristic.
-
Not Synced
I'm gonna suggest
-
Not Synced
a big, full head of human hair.
Maybe they harvested it from humans.
-
Not Synced
Or maybe they just-- They became
obsessed with hair for some reason.
-
Not Synced
So they spent years developing
a method to grow it themselves.
-
Not Synced
And that actually adds a kind of
interesting dynamic with our protagonist,
-
Not Synced
who chooses not to have
a full head of hair.
-
Not Synced
I can't believe Naughty Dog
isn't considering these things.
-
Not Synced
Anyway, there you go:
iconic enemy design.
-
Not Synced
And the #3 Big Difference:
-
Not Synced
And now we get into
the sticky muck of the truth.
-
Not Synced
'Cause I feel like Interstellar,
in its reveal,
-
Not Synced
is selling me more of a franchise
than it is selling me a video game.
-
Not Synced
This is the title of their
PlayStation blog post:
-
Not Synced
Weird use of capital letters there.
-
Not Synced
Starfield was also very clearly
trying to sell you a franchise.
-
Not Synced
And looking at the provided facts,
Starfield is a massive success today.
-
Not Synced
However, I believe it has
limited potential as a franchise.
-
Not Synced
Hard to imagine genuine excitement
for a Starfield TV show or movie,
-
Not Synced
let alone the next DLC expansion.
-
Not Synced
This is a brand new universe
"25 years in the making."
-
Not Synced
I'm not saying they're going to bail on it,
but also,
-
Not Synced
I'm saying
they should probably bail on it.
-
Not Synced
Conversely, I feel like Intergalactic
did a better job of presenting a franchise.
-
Not Synced
You can imagine the world
beyond the characters presented there.
-
Not Synced
You could be curious about
what else you might see in this universe,
-
Not Synced
what other subtitles
they could come up with.
-
Not Synced
I actually think this shot is dorky.
-
Not Synced
Seems like it's just bait
for YouTubers to pause and disect.
-
Not Synced
'Cause when you're watching it
in real time,
-
Not Synced
it's too fast to even comprehend
what you should be looking at.
-
Not Synced
I think I saw Face Aces at one point?
I don't-- What do you want me to read?
-
Not Synced
But Neil Druckmann himself,
in that PlayStation blog post, promises:
-
Not Synced
Yet, the trailer made absolutely
no effort to convey that at all.
-
Not Synced
So I think there's a concern that maybe some
big studios are getting ahead of themselves.
-
Not Synced
Maybe you just need to focus on
making one good video game
-
Not Synced
before even imagining
the tie-in comic books.
-
Not Synced
But at the same time, I imagine that
it may be difficult to acquire,
-
Not Synced
to get the green light
for a AAA game budget
-
Not Synced
without promising to your bosses,
your Hermen Hulsts,
-
Not Synced
that you will provide them with
decades of transmedia revenue.
-
Not Synced
You can probably sell
that jacket at some point.
-
Not Synced
So I think this scenario we're stuck with
in our modern age
-
Not Synced
is if you want a game
as nice as Intergalactic,
-
Not Synced
if you want a team of hundreds
to work on facial animation like that
-
Not Synced
or, you know, have this budget
-
Not Synced
or, you know, have a
Porsche logo on the spaceships,
-
Not Synced
it needs to be a franchise
and not just one game.
-
Not Synced
Otherwise, the investment
would not be worth it.
-
Not Synced
If it is just one game,
-
Not Synced
you're gonna have a little jankiness.
-
Not Synced
And as you can certainly tell,
I'm quite the janky individual myself,
-
Not Synced
so no judgements there.
-
Not Synced
And that is Delayed Input for this week.
-
Not Synced
I will be back next week.
Until then, thanks for watching.
-
Not Synced
Something that's personally
kind of interesting to me,
-
Not Synced
coming out of The Game Awards,
is that
-
Not Synced
Fromsoft announced a
multiplayer Elden Ring game that is
-
Not Synced
deeply hard to care about.
-
Not Synced
Talkin' about:
-
Not Synced
If you're just an audio listener,
that's reign as in a period of ruling
-
Not Synced
and not, you know,
precipitation.
-
Not Synced
But it's an alternate universe run-based
co-op Fortnite storm game but
-
Not Synced
with Elden Ring.
It's just-- It's interesting to witness
-
Not Synced
a Fromsoftware trailer that has all of
the elements of a thing that you love
-
Not Synced
but is just missing
a certain magical intrigue.
-
Not Synced
It's almost exactly, like, why I think
it's scary to clone a dog after they die.
-
Not Synced
This is a multiplayer sequel, quasi-sequel,
to Elden Ring,
-
Not Synced
Bandai Namco's best-selling game of all time.
This should be huge.
-
Not Synced
We should be frothing for this.
-
Not Synced
I don't know, generally, you know,
I feel like even hardcore fans are like,
-
Not Synced
[mildly] "Yeah, let's go," you know,
at best.
-
Not Synced
So it Christmas still.
Maybe I can help you out.
-
Not Synced
Maybe I can give you a few tips to make
Elden Ring Nightreign exciting to people:
-
Not Synced
You know I'm right about this.
If you're taking--
-
Not Synced
If you're putting this whole thing
in some alternate timeline,
-
Not Synced
enemies from other Souls games
is not good enough.
-
Not Synced
I need Orochimaru.
-
Not Synced
This one's a very good idea.
-
Not Synced
So it kind of works like
how the scarves did in Journey.
-
Not Synced
Basically, if you complete a run,
if you're living at the end of the 3 days
-
Not Synced
and you defeat the boss,
-
Not Synced
your tongue grows a little longer.
-
Not Synced
So then, when you're, like,
lobbying up with people,
-
Not Synced
there's this process
where everyone goes, like,
-
Not Synced
"Alright, let's see them."
-
Not Synced
And everybody goes, "Wuh."
And then, like,
-
Not Synced
if you got somebody
on your team who's, like,
-
Not Synced
flopping down into the grass,
you know you're in good hands.
-
Not Synced
So you follow their lead.
-
Not Synced
Basically, like, it's like, "Okay,
longest tongue picks where we drop."
-
Not Synced
I really think
this would get people talking.
-
Not Synced
Has anyone done this before?
Here's what I'm suggesting.
-
Not Synced
Basically, I give you money for you
to ruin the game for my friends.
-
Not Synced
Basic-- Like, here's the--
I, like, I'll give you $5
-
Not Synced
and then you make sure that
they never get good loot.
-
Not Synced
They're, like, opening a chest
and it's like
-
Not Synced
just some fucking blue potion.
[laughs]
