A.B. Lucas Class of 2024 - Valedictorian Speech

  • 0:03 - 0:05
Incredible stuff, thank you so much.
  • 0:05 - 0:09
That was unbelievable, really really exciting.
  • 0:09 - 0:13
The graduates voted on who would give the valedictorian speech.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
It's with my utmost pleasure to introduce this year's valedictorian,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    Alessandro De Menech.
  • 0:18 - 0:25
    [applause]
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    [in crowd] Let's go, Alessandro!
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    [clears throat]
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    Distinguished guests, teachers,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
fellow students, and Lucas friends and families.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
Thank you so much for coming today to share our joys at graduation.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
I am honoured to be the valedictorian today,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
representing the Graduating Class of 2024.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    As a starting note,
  • 0:49 - 0:52
we’ve never had a graduation ceremony before,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
so for a first run crossing the stage, that was pretty good.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
Give yourselves a pat on the back.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
As we reflect on our time here,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
it's impossible to not review the journey we've shared together,
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    these past four years.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
The first day of our classes in Grade 9 seems like just yesterday.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
Every radio station was playing Roxanne on repeat,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
and the phrases “you cooked” and “you ate” were referring to food.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
Lifelong friends were divided into Cohort A and B,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
and desks were placed 6 feet apart.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
In-person learning was not for long,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
as classes were soon moved online.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
Lessons were done through early-morning Google Meets,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
where all our laptop cameras suddenly “stopped working”,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
and teachers would interact with their students like Twitch streamers.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
There was nothing more embarrassing than forgetting to leave the Meet
  • 1:39 - 1:41
half an hour after class ended.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    This experience, however,
  • 1:44 - 1:47
instilled in us a powerful sense of resilience.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
We learned that even when faced with the unexpected,
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    we could persevere.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    In the years that followed,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
we slowly transitioned back to normal.
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    We grew so much,
  • 1:57 - 1:59
from wearing blue masks, to stylish black ones,
  • 1:59 - 2:03
and finally getting to see what the lower half of people’s faces looked like.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
Regardless, it is in those moments of adversity
  • 2:07 - 2:09
that we discovered the true strength of our character.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
With cautious optimism, 2022 saw a gradual return
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    to some semblance of normalcy.
  • 2:18 - 2:23
The posters telling us to stand “one Drake” apart were taken off the walls.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
The joy of reuniting in classrooms,
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    hanging out with friends,
  • 2:26 - 2:29
and getting to see other students walking through the halls ...
  • 2:29 - 2:33
... these simple moments were magnified after two years of isolation.
  • 2:33 - 2:38
The spirit of Lucas began to rekindle, brighter than ever before.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    In the years that ensued,
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    we embraced these experiences,
  • 2:41 - 2:44
cherishing the in-person connections we had missed.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
Even in the face of adversity,
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    we Vikings stick together.
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    In the wintertime,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
friend groups would trek together through snow banks and blizzards,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
just because one person wanted a Popeyes chicken sandwich.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
Now, we fight over who gets shotgun.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    We shared the joys, heartaches,
  • 3:02 - 3:06
and the rollercoaster of emotions that come with our teenage years,
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    but we also have had
  • 3:07 - 3:09
our own unique experiences and challenges,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
and our own unique situations with families and friends
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    that helped shape our character.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
If it’s alright, I’d like to say some thank yous.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    To our teachers ...
  • 3:17 - 3:20
I know it couldn’t have been easy trying to instruct us
  • 3:20 - 3:23
and impart to us the qualities for a successful future.
  • 3:23 - 3:24
We thank you for your guidance
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    - and your patience.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    To our families …
  • 3:28 - 3:29
Thank you for your unwavering support
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    and sacrifices throughout our journey.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
We couldn’t have done it without you.
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    And to students …
  • 3:35 - 3:39
Thank you for making these past 4 years so memorable.
  • 3:39 - 3:43
Some of us will be starting a new phase of our lives right here in London.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
Some of us will be starting our new lives in far away places.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    But whatever the circumstances,
  • 3:48 - 3:51
we'll always have the memories of the last four years together.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
I’m really going to miss you guys.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
I’m going to miss spending time with friends,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    going on adventures during lunch,
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    walking through the crowded hallways,
  • 4:01 - 4:04
the Lucas sports teams, the Friday night football games,
  • 4:04 - 4:07
the caf cookies, the walks to Smiley’s,
  • 4:07 - 4:09
and even Dr. Loney’s Learning Portfolios. [audience groans]
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    [audience groans]
  • 4:11 - 4:14
These past 4 years have been filled with laughter and fun,
  • 4:14 - 4:16
and I have made incredible memories with so many of you
  • 4:16 - 4:20
that I'll hold onto for so many years to come.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
If there’s anything I’ve learned from our Lucas sports teams,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
it’s that I should end this speech with a Vikes-on-3.
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    But I’d like to acknowledge,
  • 4:26 - 4:29
we usually do this chant at the start of our games, not at the end.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    So let this be symbolic,
  • 4:31 - 4:35
not as the end of a previous chapter of our lives,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
but as the beginning of a new one.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
We vikings are going forth and conquering:
  • 4:39 - 4:41
some of us returning in the fall,
  • 4:41 - 4:43
some of us going off into the world.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
This may be the last time we will ever be assembled together in one place.
  • 4:48 - 4:49
I'm sure that in the coming years,
  • 4:49 - 4:52
everyone's paths will cross many times over.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
When you see a fellow Viking,
  • 4:54 - 4:55
make sure to stop and say hi.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
Because once a Viking, always a Viking.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
So if everyone’s ready, for one last time,
  • 5:01 - 5:02
    Vikes on three!
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    [1, 2, 3, VIKES!]
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    Thank you. [audience cheers]
  • 5:06 - 5:17
    [audience cheers]
  • 5:17 - 5:19
Wonderful job, Alessandro, that was incredible.
  • 5:19 - 5:21
I would like to call vice-principal
  • 5:21 - 5:22
Ms. Jamie Brosel up to present Alessandro
  • 5:22 - 5:25
with a special gift to say thank you.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    Greetings everyone,
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    Thank you Alessandro for your
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    words of reflection as valedictorian,
  • 5:38 - 5:41
Would you kindly join me again here?
  • 5:41 - 5:42
    Thank you.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
We wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavours,
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    Thank you very much.
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    Thank you. [applause]
  • 5:48 - 5:56
    [applause]
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    Ooookay.
  • 5:59 - 6:01
I know you love hearing from me, students...
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    [audience laughs]
  • 6:03 - 6:08
So, here are my last words to you,
  • 6:08 - 6:11
if I don't find you in the bathroom again on Monday!
