Africa Day 2025 Message of President of Ghana H.E. John Dramani Mahama,

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Fellow Africans, esteemed leaders,
  • 0:02 - 0:03
    brothers and sisters
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    of the African continent,
  • 0:05 - 0:06
It is with great honor that
  • 0:06 - 0:08
I address you today on the occasion of
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    Africa Day, 2025.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
As we gather in Addis Ababa and
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    connect across our vast continent
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    and beyond,
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    we celebrate our resilience,
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    our rich heritage and
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    our unwavering spirit.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    This year, our celebration
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    is particularly significant.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
The African Union has declared 2025 as
  • 0:27 - 0:30
the year for justice for Africans and
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    people of African decent
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    through reparations.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    As the AU champion
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    for this critical cause,
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    I'm deeply committed
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    to working with you all
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    to achieve this vital objective.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
For too long, the legacy of slavery,
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    colonialism and neocolonialism
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    has cast a long shadow
  • 0:48 - 0:51
on the lives and progress of Africans
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    and people of African decent.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    These historical injustices have
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    left deep scars.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    Reparations are not merely about
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    financial compensation,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
they are about acknowledging the profound
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    and enduring damage inflicted upon
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    our people.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    They are about confronting
  • 1:09 - 1:12
the uncomfortable truths of our past
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    and taking concrete steps
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    to rectify these wrongs.
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    We seek justice.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    Justice that encompasses a comprehensive
  • 1:19 - 1:25
    range of measures including:
  • 1:25 - 1:25
    Official and unequivocal apology
  • 1:25 - 1:25
    from the nations and institutions
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    responsible for perpetuating these
  • 1:26 - 1:26
    historical injustices.
  • 1:26 - 1:26
    Addressing the crippling debt burden
  • 1:26 - 1:26
that continues to stifle economic growth
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    in many African nations -
  • 1:27 - 1:27
    a direct consequence of exploitation
  • 1:27 - 1:27
    and unfair trade practices.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    Providing resources and expertise to
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    empower African nations to achieve
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    sustainable development and participate
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    fully in the global economy.
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    Returning stolen artefacts
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    and cultural treasures that rightfully
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    belong to our heritage.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    Investing in the educational initiatives
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    to promote a deeper understanding
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    of African history, culture
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    and contributions to the world.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    This is not a simple task;
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    it requires courage, determination
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    and a unified front.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    It requires us to engage
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    in meaningful dialogue
  • 1:55 - 1:57
with those responsible and to advaocate
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    tirelessly for our rights.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
I call upon my colleague African leaders,
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    civil society organizations and
  • 2:02 - 2:05
youth groups and members of the diaspora
  • 2:05 - 2:07
to join hands in this important endeavor.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
Let us work together to build a future
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    where justice prevails,
  • 2:10 - 2:12
where the wounds of the past are healed
  • 2:12 - 2:14
and where the potential of every African
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    and person of African decent
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    is fully realized.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
Let Africa Day, 2025 be a turning point.
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    Let us reaffirm our commitment
  • 2:20 - 2:22
to building a continent of prosperity,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    opportunity, and equality
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    for all our people.
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    Let the pursuit of reparations
  • 2:27 - 2:29
be a testament to our resilience,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    our determination and
  • 2:31 - 2:33
our unwavering belief in a brighter future
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Happy Africa day,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
let us move together - united in purpose
  • 2:37 - 2:39
towards a just and equitable future
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    for all Africans
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    and people of African decent.
