creating a dopamine menu to end my doomscrolling

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    (calm music)
  • 0:04 -
Today, I'm creating my dopamine menu.
  • Not Synced
I saw people on the internet do this thing
  • Not Synced
    called a "dopamine menu".
  • Not Synced
I was intrigued, I did my research,
  • Not Synced
and I was like, "I need to do this thing."
  • Not Synced
A dopamine menu is a list of enjoyable
  • Not Synced
activities divided into courses that you
  • Not Synced
can do to stimulate the release of dopamine
  • Not Synced
in the brain. So it's just basically
  • Not Synced
designed as a way to provide alternative
  • Not Synced
    sources of excitement, enjoyment,
  • Not Synced
    pleasure, motivation, instead of relying
  • Not Synced
    on your typical doomscrolling,
  • Not Synced
    binge-watching, binge-anything.
  • Not Synced
And I actually don't hear a lot of people
  • Not Synced
talk about dopamine menus and what
  • Not Synced
they are and their purpose, so I just
  • Not Synced
decided I might as well do my own dopamine
  • Not Synced
menu while explaining to you what a
  • Not Synced
dopamine menu is. So, this is what
  • Not Synced
I am going to do today.
  • Not Synced
So, to create this menu, I used some
  • Not Synced
watercolor paper and folded it in half to
  • Not Synced
create this sort of... menu style kind of?
  • Not Synced
    You can see basically.
  • Not Synced
And then, I went on the internet to find
  • Not Synced
some ideas of how my menu could look like,
  • Not Synced
but I ended up not really finding
  • Not Synced
anything, so I just relied on my brain
  • Not Synced
and on my creativity to create my menu.
  • Not Synced
A dopamine menu, like I said, is a menu
  • Not Synced
divided into courses just like a
  • Not Synced
    restaurant menu that's divided
  • Not Synced
    into courses.
  • Not Synced
And the goal of this dopamine menu
  • Not Synced
is that, whenever you feel like getting
  • Not Synced
dopamine from doomscrolling, you can open
  • Not Synced
your dopamine menu and pick whatever
  • Not Synced
activity you want depending on your level
  • Not Synced
of motivation and the time you have ahead
  • Not Synced
of you, and get your source of dopamine,
  • Not Synced
    enjoyment, excitement, from
  • Not Synced
    these activities, from these healthy
  • Not Synced
    activities, instead of relying on
  • Not Synced
    doomscrolling and binge-watching.
  • Not Synced
And most importantly, to remind yourself
  • Not Synced
of these sources of dopamine because
  • Not Synced
sometimes, when we scroll on social media,
  • Not Synced
or when we wanna scroll on social media,
  • Not Synced
we forget the alternatives that make us
  • Not Synced
    happy, and fulfilled, and excited.
  • Not Synced
So, you just have to open your menu to
  • Not Synced
remind yourself of what you can do
  • Not Synced
    instead of doomscrolling.
  • Not Synced
I decided to include five courses
  • Not Synced
in my menu, but you don't actually have to
  • Not Synced
    include all of these courses.
  • Not Synced
The first course in my menu is appetizers
  • Not Synced
    or starters.
  • Not Synced
In this course, you include activities
  • Not Synced
that take less than 15 minutes to do, so
  • Not Synced
typically ranging from two minutes to 15
  • Not Synced
    minutes.
  • Not Synced
I included yoga, making a coffee,
  • Not Synced
    tidying my room, journaling,
  • Not Synced
sitting in front of direct sunlight,
  • Not Synced
playing my favorite song, listen to
  • Not Synced
    affirmations, but you can include
  • Not Synced
    whatever you want.
  • Not Synced
    Then there's the main course.
  • Not Synced
It includes activities that take over 45
  • Not Synced
minutes to do, or maybe 30 minutes.
  • Not Synced
I would say over 30 minutes to do.
  • Not Synced
In my main course, I added watching an
  • Not Synced
    educational video, reading articles,
  • Not Synced
    exercising, deep cleaning, long journaling
  • Not Synced
    sessions, and shadow work.
  • Not Synced
And again, you can add anything you want,
  • Not Synced
so those are activities that require more
  • Not Synced
energy from you and more time from you,
  • Not Synced
but that still gives you a sense of pride
  • Not Synced
    and satisfaction when it's finished.
  • Not Synced
My third course is the sides.
  • Not Synced
    So basically, this includes activities
  • Not Synced
that you do while doing other activities.
  • Not Synced
For example, listening to music while
  • Not Synced
working out, listening to a podcast while
  • Not Synced
doing some light work, lighting a candle
  • Not Synced
while you stretch or read a book.
  • Not Synced
The fourth course, which to me is the
  • Not Synced
    most interesting one, is the
  • Not Synced
    desserts course.
  • Not Synced
So, I call this one a treat after an
  • Not Synced
    exhausting day.
  • Not Synced
For example, if I had a bad day, or if
  • Not Synced
I've been productive, or if I'm proud of
  • Not Synced
myself and I wanna give myself a treat,
  • Not Synced
then I will pick one of these desserts,
  • Not Synced
    let's just say.
  • Not Synced
So, I've included things like scrolling
  • Not Synced
on Pinterest, watching a movie or my
  • Not Synced
favorite TV show, watching a YouTube video,
  • Not Synced
read a fiction book, do a complete
  • Not Synced
skincare routine, and more, and more,
  • Not Synced
    and more.
  • Not Synced
You can literally add anything you want,
  • Not Synced
but I personally try to keep it in check,
  • Not Synced
not put "doomscrolling on social media"
  • Not Synced
or anything, or maybe if you put
  • Not Synced
    "doomscrolling on social media", maybe
  • Not Synced
    put "15 minutes of doomscrolling",
  • Not Synced
something like that, I don't know.
  • Not Synced
And the last course of the menu is
  • Not Synced
    the specials.
  • Not Synced
So, I call this one out of the ordinary
  • Not Synced
events, things that I don't get to do
  • Not Synced
    every day.
  • Not Synced
So, I've added "go to the movies",
  • Not Synced
"go to a coffee shop", "go to a concert",
  • Not Synced
"go to the beach", "buy a wishlist item",
  • Not Synced
    and "take a class".
  • Not Synced
So, those are events that are not ordinary
  • Not Synced
for me, and that's what you're supposed to
  • Not Synced
put in your specials as well.
  • Not Synced
Then, I decided to create the front page
  • Not Synced
of my menu and it was a disaster.
  • Not Synced
I ended up coloring the page in green and
  • Not Synced
I hated it - I absolutely hated it, so
  • Not Synced
please do not judge me for it, but this
  • Not Synced
was a way for me to beat my perfectionism,
  • Not Synced
because that's also one of the reasons why
  • Not Synced
I stopped painting and I stopped drawing,
  • Not Synced
because I am a freaking perfectionist.
  • Not Synced
So, I decided to let it go and just
  • Not Synced
    do something.
  • Not Synced
I just try to remind myself that things
  • Not Synced
are not supposed to be perfect,
  • Not Synced
and especially because it's for me, so it
  • Not Synced
doesn't even have to be perfect.
  • Not Synced
    (music)
  • Not Synced
Then, I wrote a little note on the back
  • Not Synced
page that you can see, and I've decided to
  • Not Synced
fill the menu by adding PNG images of food,
  • Not Synced
because it was a bit empty, so I just
  • Not Synced
printed some images of food and glued them
  • Not Synced
to my menu and it really turned out super,
  • Not Synced
    super cute.
  • Not Synced
I just love the way it turned out.
  • Not Synced
    (music)
  • Not Synced
So, I'm done with my dopamine menu.
  • Not Synced
The front page looks like this.
  • Not Synced
I kinda regret having put the green,
  • Not Synced
it doesn't look that good, honestly.
  • Not Synced
So, I think - I feel like I'm gonna do my
  • Not Synced
dopamine menu again, but - because it
  • Not Synced
kinda gave me ideas while I was making it,
  • Not Synced
but this is the front page, "dopamine menu",
  • Not Synced
"pick what you wanna try, made by your chef."
  • Not Synced
I added these little PNG images of food.
  • Not Synced
My printer didn't have any juice, so the
  • Not Synced
images don't even look good, but, yeah.
  • Not Synced
And then, when you open the menu, you have
  • Not Synced
the starters, the mains, the sides,
  • Not Synced
the deserts, and - desert or dessert?
  • Not Synced
The desserts, and the specials with more
  • Not Synced
    PNG images of food.
  • Not Synced
    Honestly, it looks really cute.
  • Not Synced
    It looks really, really cute.
  • Not Synced
    And then, the last page.
  • Not Synced
"We hope to see you soon."
  • Not Synced
I actually kinda want to make another
  • Not Synced
    dopamine menu, but more work.
  • Not Synced
I didn't really plan the way I wanted
  • Not Synced
    it to be.
  • Not Synced
That's why it turned out a bit random,
  • Not Synced
but I want to work in more.
  • Not Synced
And I invite you to do the same thing.
  • Not Synced
I'm not gonna keep it on my desk, but you
  • Not Synced
can see like this: "Hmm, dopamine menu."
  • Not Synced
laughs But anyway, I hope you liked the
  • Not Synced
video, and if you did, then, that's nice
  • Not Synced
because this was really exciting to make,
  • Not Synced
and yeah, you can tell me in the comments
  • Not Synced
if you knew about dopamine menus, if you
  • Not Synced
didn't know, if you plan on making a
  • Not Synced
dopamine menu now that you have watched
  • Not Synced
my video, and yeah, I will see you in
  • Not Synced
    the next video.
