Yanis Varoufakis: Palestinian Genocide - Gaza, Resistance, Truth, and Europe’s Role

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Hello, I'm Yanis Varoufakis
with a few thoughts on what
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    we should be watching out
    for as the Palestinian
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    genocide unfolds.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    Watching, on the one hand,
    the Israeli soldiers' video
  • 0:10 - 0:15
    confessions of their genocidal
intent and acts, and on the
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    other hand, the Palestinians'
    live streaming of their own
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    deaths and devastation, it is
ever so easy to throw one's
  • 0:21 - 0:25
hands up in the air, to
despair, to want to shut the
  • 0:25 - 0:30
    cruelty out, to disengage,
    to find solace in oblivion.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
But it is not only ethically
    wrong to surrender to
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    despair, it is also
    factually wrong that nothing
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    good can be expected.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    Things change every day, and
yes, in the midst of this
  • 0:42 - 0:47
    misery, of this inhumanity,
the seeds of hope are already
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    planted on the blood-soaked
    soil of the ancient
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    land of Palestine.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
They may only be seeds, but
that's how new life is born.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    Let us begin with a
    difficult to discern,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    yet indubitable reality.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    Israel is not winning
    on the battlefields.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    Gaza has been destroyed, yes.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    Its population, its entire
    population, the entire
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    population of Gaza
    is on death row.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    And yet, the smarter amongst
    those in the Israeli military
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    know full well that the
    destruction they wreaked does
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    not translate into a victory.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    15 months after they
    re-invaded the open prison
  • 1:25 - 1:28
that was Gaza us since 1948.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    They still cannot
    control more than a small
  • 1:31 - 1:32
portion of it at a time.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Armed resistance, including
    the regular blowing
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    up of Israeli mighty
    tanks, is continuing.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    Israeli military officers
    also know that their political
  • 1:41 - 1:45
    leaders' stated aim of
    eradicating Hamas can never
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    be demonstrably achieved.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    However many Hamas fighters
they kill, as a former Israeli
  • 1:50 - 1:53
general put it to me, even
if we kill most of the Gazans
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    before we declare victory.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    A single teenager raising
    a single Hamas flag over
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    a pile of rubble will
    prove that we failed.
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    Similarly in Lebanon.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
Yes, Israel has killed much of
    the Hezbollah leadership and
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    yes, the ceasefire it imposed
    on Hezbollah succeeded
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    in stopping the Hezbollah
    missile launches in solidarity
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    with the Palestinian
    resistance further south.
  • 2:19 - 2:24
    However, the Lebanon ceasefire
    was also forced upon Israel
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    by its army's inability to
    venture without massive losses
  • 2:28 - 2:30
by more than a few kilometers
    into Lebanese territory.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
And lest we forget, it is
    simply not true that Hezbollah
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    had to accept the ceasefire
    because its missile
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    arsenal was destroyed.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    Israel signed the ceasefire
    hours after missiles,
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    you remember that?
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    Missiles of Hezbollah hit
    Haifa and indeed Tel Aviv.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    In other words, the past
    year will be remembered
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    as a cruel paradox.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    Israel destroyed Gaza and
    much of South Lebanon,
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    mainly from the air.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    But Israel failed abysmally
    to control the ground.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    The time is fast approaching
    when Israeli society will
  • 3:04 - 3:09
    realize that the thousands
    of Israeli soldiers that were
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    killed or seriously wounded
were the victims of an Israeli
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    leadership that ultimately
    placed the interests of those
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    soldiers and the people of
    Israel very low in their
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    own list of priorities.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
This is also confirmed by the
    readiness of the Netanyahu
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    government to lie through
    its teeth about its own
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    casualties on the battlefield.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    Compare the low number of
    casualties officially admitted
  • 3:35 - 3:39
    with the more than 20,000
    soldiers that Israel's health
  • 3:39 - 3:43
    authorities are telling us
    they have admitted to veteran
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    rehabilitation centres.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
Turning now to the medium and
long-term impact of the war on
  • 3:48 - 3:53
    Israel's economy, which, after
    all, is of great significance
  • 3:53 - 3:57
    from the perspective of the
    apartheid state's capacity to
  • 3:57 - 4:01
    reproduce itself through war
    and devastation, its financial
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    capacity to reproduce itself.
  • 4:03 - 4:07
    Well, it isn't instructive
to read a letter signed by
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    more than a hundred Israeli
    economists, including Dan
  • 4:10 - 4:17
    Bendavid, who explained in
    full technicality how Israel's
  • 4:17 - 4:22
    economic miracle is now in
    peril, how it hinges,
  • 4:22 - 4:26
iit always hinged, on a high-tech
    sector that numbers at
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    most 300,000 souls,
    including doctors,
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    scientists,
    technologists, academics.
  • 4:33 - 4:39
    And Ben David's point being,
well, if only 10%, he says,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    of these 300,000, in other
    words, if only about 30,000
  • 4:41 - 4:48
    of those experts and
    high-tech, well-educated elite,
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    if around 30,000 of
    them leave the country,
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    Israel's already
    hugely indebted economy
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    will simply fade out.
  • 4:57 - 5:01
    In Ben David's even starker
    words and I quote:
  • 5:01 - 5:06
'We won't become a third world country,
    we just won't be anymore.
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    Only 0.6% of the
    population are doctors
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    but who trains them?
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    The senior staff in
    research universities
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    are 0.1% of the people.
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    High-tech workers are
    6% of the population.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    Altogether, this is
    what I said before,
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    it's 300,000 people.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    It's enough that a critical
mass of this group chooses not
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    to be here tomorrow morning
    and the state of Israel
  • 5:30 - 5:35
    leaves the developed world.'
    Close quotation marks.
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    Are they leaving?
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    You bet they are.
  • 5:38 - 5:42
Leaving behind them, in a more
    influential position, more
  • 5:42 - 5:45
    dominant than ever, the
    low productivity bigots
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    who are driving the fascist
    settler movement in the
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    occupied territories.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    And the more dominant these
    low productivity bigots
  • 5:52 - 5:56
    become, within government
    and in society,
  • 5:56 - 6:00
the greater the exodus of the
    high-tech, secular,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    more liberally-minded Israelis.
  • 6:02 - 6:07
    This is the definition
    of a spiral of collapse.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    This spiral is, of course,
    utterly connected with the
  • 6:10 - 6:14
    precipitous reputational loss
    of Israel, the massacres,
  • 6:14 - 6:17
    the genocide of Palestinians,
    and in particular, the manner
  • 6:17 - 6:20
in which so so many Israeli
    soldiers and politicians
  • 6:20 - 6:26
    celebrate it in videos, in
    speeches, in posts on X.
  • 6:26 - 6:30
    All that has claimed what
is left of the illusion of
  • 6:30 - 6:34
    Israel as a European liberal
    democracy embedded in
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    a hostile Middle East.
  • 6:36 - 6:39
    That illusion has been a
    central underpinning of
  • 6:39 - 6:43
    the propaganda that helped
    Israeli lobbyists succeed in
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    Washington and in Brussels.
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    Now it is gone.
  • 6:47 - 6:51
It has drowned in the sea of
    flesh and blood the Israeli
  • 6:51 - 6:55
    military has strewn all over
    Gaza, wherever they went.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    And of course the trail
    of destruction, hatred and
  • 6:58 - 7:02
    viciousness that the settlers
    have unleashed across the
  • 7:02 - 7:05
West Bank and in East Jerusalem.
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    Once Israel's cleverly
    constructed reputation
  • 7:09 - 7:13
    has gone solid, it
    cannot be reclaimed.
  • 7:13 - 7:17
And that is good news in the
    sense that the first step
  • 7:17 - 7:21
    towards a just peace is
    the ethical fall from
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    grace of the aggressor.
  • 7:23 - 7:26
    Turning now to the situation
in the West Bank, it is
  • 7:26 - 7:29
    utterly heart-wrenching to
    watch the non-stop violence
  • 7:29 - 7:33
    against the Palestinians
    who live under the brutal
  • 7:33 - 7:37
    apartheid regime in the
    West Bank in East Jerusalem.
  • 7:37 - 7:40
    The violence against the
    Palestinians in the West Bank
  • 7:40 - 7:44
    and in East Jerusalem comes
    from three quite separate,
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    but of course interlinked
    and connected quarters.
  • 7:47 - 7:50
    It comes from the Israeli
    military, from Israeli
  • 7:50 - 7:54
    settlers, and most tragically,
    from the Palestinian
  • 7:54 - 7:58
    Authority's own security
forces who are in the midst of
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    the genocide of their people
    by the apartheid state,
  • 8:01 - 8:04
    they are cooperating fully
    with the security forces of
  • 8:04 - 8:07
    that same apartheid state.
  • 8:07 - 8:09
    Why the Israeli
    army is doing it?
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    We know.
  • 8:10 - 8:12
    Why the Israeli
    settlers are doing it?
  • 8:13 - 8:14
    We know.
  • 8:14 - 8:17
But why oh why is the
    leadership of the Palestinian
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    Authority doing it?
  • 8:19 - 8:22
    It's important to note that
this is not the first time.
  • 8:22 - 8:26
    The Palestinian Authority,
    the leadership has cooperated
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    fully with the Israeli
    occupiers for a
  • 8:28 - 8:29
    very long time.
  • 8:30 - 8:35
    With occupiers, remember, who
    are steadfastly rejecting any
  • 8:35 - 8:38
    prospect of the Palestinian
    Authority becoming the
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    government of a Palestinian
    state, which contradicts the
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    very raison d'etre of the
    Palestinian Authority,
  • 8:44 - 8:47
    which, ostensibly, is to
    set up a Palestinian state.
  • 8:47 - 8:52
But now, in the face of
    the fully-fledged genocidal
  • 8:52 - 8:55
    campaign by Israel, the
    Palestinian Authority's
  • 8:55 - 8:58
    excuses are becoming
    transparent, thin,
  • 8:58 - 8:59
    impossible to fathom.
  • 9:00 - 9:03
    The unelected,
    unrepresentative, patently
  • 9:03 - 9:06
    corrupt leadership of the
    Palestinian Authority is
  • 9:06 - 9:11
    behaving as if to impress
    Netanyahu, and soon Trump,
  • 9:11 - 9:15
    that they, the Palestinian
    Authority, can do Netanyahu's
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    and Trump's dirty work
    for them, with a veneer
  • 9:18 - 9:21
    of legitimacy, that they
    have a role to play.
  • 9:21 - 9:24
That's what they are trying to
    convince Netanyahu and Trump.
  • 9:24 - 9:28
It is a pathetic plea to
    the genocidal US-Israeli
  • 9:28 - 9:32
    establishment to give them a
job to do, especially now that
  • 9:32 - 9:35
    the Palestinian people have
    seen through them,
  • 9:35 - 9:38
nothing else explains why they, the
    leadership of the Palestinian
  • 9:39 - 9:42
    Authority, are turning
    even against Fatah
  • 9:42 - 9:45
    members who continue
    to resist in Jenin
  • 9:45 - 9:46
    and elsewhere.
  • 9:46 - 9:49
This, I have to confess, is
    the saddest, most depressing
  • 9:49 - 9:52
    aspect of the Palestinian
tragedy, so I shall not dwell
  • 9:52 - 9:57
on it, except to reiterate the
    urgent need for the election
  • 9:57 - 10:00
    of a representative and thus
    legitimate leadership of
  • 10:00 - 10:01
    the Palestinian people.
  • 10:01 - 10:05
No peace can be imagined, let
    alone be negotiated otherwise.
  • 10:06 - 10:09
I hope and trust that the
    Palestinians will find
  • 10:09 - 10:12
    a way to speak with
    one representative,
  • 10:12 - 10:14
    non-sectarian voice.
  • 10:14 - 10:18
    Nothing short of that is
    called for as the Palestinian
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    people face genocide.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
As for the rest of us, we
must stand by to help give
  • 10:23 - 10:27
    this voice, their voice,
    a chance to be heard.
  • 10:27 - 10:30
    To sum up, to conclude,
    days before Donald Trump
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    enters the White House.
  • 10:32 - 10:35
I'm speaking to you on the
    9th of January, to give
  • 10:35 - 10:36
    you the precise date.
  • 10:37 - 10:39
    Donald Trump is about to
    enter the White House.
  • 10:39 - 10:43
    A man who has never
    not liked any war crime
  • 10:43 - 10:46
    aimed at eradicating the
    Palestinian resistance.
  • 10:47 - 10:50
    The Palestinians as a
    people, native to Palestine.
  • 10:51 - 10:53
    Just before this man
    enters the White House,
  • 10:53 - 10:55
    we are at a crossroads.
  • 10:55 - 10:58
    Not just as Palestinians,
    as Europeans, Americans, as
  • 10:58 - 11:04
    humanity, as a humanity that
    is watching a genocide unfold
  • 11:04 - 11:06
    in real-time on our screens.
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    And what is this crossroads?
  • 11:09 - 11:11
    Allow me to paint it
    with a few brush strokes.
  • 11:12 - 11:14
    We have mega-deaths and
    uber-destruction on the
  • 11:14 - 11:18
    ground, wreaked by a
    US-armed and European
  • 11:18 - 11:20
    Union-supported Israel.
  • 11:20 - 11:24
    A spiral of collapse within
    Israel's social economy.
  • 11:24 - 11:27
    Arab countries split between
    complicit regimes and
  • 11:28 - 11:29
    enraged population citizens.
  • 11:30 - 11:33
    A global South that is
    becoming increasingly powerful
  • 11:33 - 11:37
    and increasingly intolerant
    of the Western Israeli
  • 11:37 - 11:43
    self-awarded right ethnically
    to cleanse the non-Jewish
  • 11:43 - 11:44
    native population.
  • 11:45 - 11:48
    And a Western public
    opinion that can no longer
  • 11:48 - 11:50
    pretend not to know.
  • 11:51 - 11:55
What is the upshot of this
    picture, of these crossroads?
  • 11:55 - 11:58
If I were to issue an educated
    guess, it would be this.
  • 11:59 - 12:01
    Things will get even
    worse for the Palestinians
  • 12:01 - 12:02
    in the short run.
  • 12:02 - 12:07
But, in the longer run, the
    possibility of liberation, of
  • 12:07 - 12:11
    a just peace for Palestinians
    who refuse to go gently
  • 12:11 - 12:14
into the good night, and for
    Israelis, who understand the
  • 12:14 - 12:18
    trap into which the Netanyahu
    regime has ensnared them seems
  • 12:18 - 12:22
    stronger than it has been
    for at least 30 years.
  • 12:22 - 12:25
Thank you and let's keep up
the campaign for a just peace
  • 12:25 - 12:27
    in the Middle East, which
    is a prerequisite for
  • 12:27 - 12:28
    the liberation of us all.
  • 12:29 - 12:30
    Carpe diem.
