How To Make A Stair-step Pop-up For The Biography Mini-DioramaFri Apr 11 2025 16:32:34 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time)]

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    >> Hi, everyone.
  • 0:02 - 0:09
I wanted to show you how to make our mini
diorama that you're going to be using
  • 0:09 - 0:15
for the biography of someone who's
    made a contribution to society.
  • 0:15 - 0:24
You can find the unit plan on Module 17,
week nine, a full description of the project.
  • 0:24 - 0:32
I'm going to show you how to make this
    kind of stand-up, stair-step pop-up.
  • 0:32 - 0:38
Each layer is going to have some
    sort of design or decoration
  • 0:38 - 0:47
or one of your clay objects
    that represent the person.
  • 0:48 - 0:54
For this, I'm using like index cards,
the larger index card, two of them,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
because we want to cover up the hole in the back
  • 0:56 - 1:01
and give it a little bit more
    support and glue it down.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
So let me just show you how to do that.
  • 1:04 - 1:10
First, you're going to take a
piece of paper, not copy paper.
  • 1:10 - 1:19
Try and find like the sturdiest, a thicker
piece of paper, like tag board, you know,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
that file folders are made out of.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
I'm going to fold it in half.
  • 1:25 - 1:31
I'm going to call it the
    hamburger fold, portrait fold.
  • 1:31 - 1:38
Okay. So, on the fold, I'm going to
draw some lines for you just to show.
  • 1:39 - 1:44
    I don't have a second camera, so I
need to put it down on a surface.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
We're going to make some cuts.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
So, we're going to make some cuts.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    Here are the lines.
  • 1:55 - 2:02
    It's far enough away from each edge;
otherwise, like, it would be really too thin.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
So make sure it's moved in.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
Make sure it's under halfway of your paper.
  • 2:07 - 2:14
Then I'm going to take and I'm going
to cut right on these two lines.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
And I going to take and I'm going to fold it up.
  • 2:24 - 2:29
Again, I need a heavier surface to
do it, so I'm going to put it down.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
So I just folded it forwards.
  • 2:33 - 2:38
Then I'm going to fold it backwards, the
opposite direction, so I get a really good fold.
  • 2:38 - 2:42
And then one more fold forwards, kind
of like what you do with origami.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
Then I'm going to put this little flap down.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
I'm going to open it up.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
From the back, I'm going to push it through.
  • 2:51 - 2:56
    I'm going to fold it.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
And I've got my first layer.
  • 2:58 - 3:04
So, what I'm going to do now,
    I've got a top and a bottom.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
So I'm going to take the top layer.
  • 3:09 - 3:17
And just so you can see what I'm doing,
I'm going to draw two lines, again,
  • 3:17 - 3:23
away from the cut edge and less than halfway up.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
Okay? So what I'm going to do, I'm
just going to cut the top layer.
  • 3:28 - 3:33
If you wanted to come out, you
    would be cutting two layers.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
And if you accidentally do that, that's fine.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
And I'll show you what that looks like.
  • 3:37 - 3:42
So again, here, I'm going to cut.
  • 3:42 - 3:50
And make sure your cuts are even when you pop it
through, so you won't have any problems folding.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
So I'm going to fold it up.
  • 3:52 - 3:58
And let me put it down on a surface
so I can get a really good fold.
  • 3:58 - 4:02
Now, it's really hard to fold it
back, so I just fold it forwards.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
So I'm going to do the same thing.
  • 4:03 - 4:07
I'm going to open it up.
  • 4:07 - 4:11
I'm going to push it through,
    kind of pull it through.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
And then I get my second layer.
  • 4:14 - 4:21
And what you can do, you can just put
it on a surface and make another fold.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
Got to get it on camera here.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    One more, one more.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
Let me draw the lines again.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
Again, the line is not too
close to the edge of that cut.
  • 4:43 - 4:46
I'm going to cut, and I'm
just going to do the top.
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    Let's see.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
I'll show it to you there.
  • 4:51 - 4:57
Okay. I'm going to take the same thing.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    Fold it up.
  • 4:59 - 5:04
    I'm going to open it.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
I'm going to push it through.
  • 5:05 - 5:11
I'm going to fold it again.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
Oops. And you have your three layers.
  • 5:14 - 5:20
Let's say if you want to have a layer
coming out here, same thing here,
  • 5:20 - 5:24
    or like this little layer
here, you just cut the bottom.
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    So let me do that.
  • 5:25 - 5:35
So I'm just going to make a cut here, cut here.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
Fold it. This time, I think
I'm going to fold it backwards.
  • 5:39 - 5:40
That would be a little easier.
  • 5:40 - 5:44
    Fold it backwards.
  • 5:49 - 5:50
And you have it where it comes out.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    Again, it's not required.
  • 5:53 - 6:01
Just, you know, try for your three different
layers here like I did with this one.
  • 6:03 - 6:06
And then this would get glued down.
  • 6:06 - 6:09
And then you would get a piece of paper.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    Let's see.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
Ah, here's my piece of paper.
  • 6:20 - 6:24
Ideally, they're the same size, but I wanted
to show you a colored piece of paper here.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
You put the fold on top of the fold.
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    There's a fold there.
  • 6:30 - 6:32
There's a fold in the middle.
  • 6:32 - 6:37
So you just like put them on top,
and then you would glue them down.
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    Let me get that.
  • 6:40 - 6:45
And it's kind of nice to use
different colors because then you get
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    like another color showing through.
  • 6:47 - 6:54
So, with your person who's made a
    contribution, put their name here.
  • 6:54 - 7:02
Get a photocopy of an image, or
you can draw a photo of them.
  • 7:02 - 7:10
And use, you know, like -- Put like designs
that would represent like that person.
  • 7:10 - 7:15
Pretend that you're a museum curator
and this is going to be in a glass case.
  • 7:16 - 7:20
Okay? We have some air-dry clay in class.
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    You make little objects that
    represent the person.
  • 7:25 - 7:36
Decorate, design the back, and kind of
like the bottom, the ground level too.
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    You can use fabric.
  • 7:37 - 7:41
You can use construction paper making designs.
  • 7:41 - 7:49
Okay. So, I hope this helps you, and I
can't wait to see your finished work.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    Thanks. Bye-bye.
