Japanese Mailman's Incredible Job Climbing a Mountain | YAMADERA ★ ONLY in JAPAN

  • 0:00 - 0:06
So here we are at the top of Yamadera Risshaku-ji Temple completed in 860.
  • 0:06 - 0:10
There is no more beautiful spot than this one in autumn
  • 0:10 - 0:13
an amazing view overlooking Yamagata Prefecture.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
And at the top of 1015 steps lies a public Japan
  • 0:17 - 0:20
Post box and a man who has to climb these
  • 0:20 - 0:22
steps almost every day to pick it up.
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    [Music]
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    Irasshaimase (welcome)
  • 0:36 - 0:38
Only In Japan (voice of Peter von Gomm)
  • 0:40 - 0:43
I jumped on an E3 series bullet train
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    the Yamagata Shinkansen from Tokyo
  • 0:45 - 0:48
for the 2 hour 45 minute ride north
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    the morning mist exciting me
  • 0:50 - 0:52
for the adventure at hand today.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
Yamadera north-east of Yamagata City in the
  • 0:55 - 0:58
mountains is a gem for off-the-beaten-path
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    travelers, especially beautiful in autumn.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
Close to the JR station is an over
  • 1:03 - 1:05
1000 step stairway hike to the ancient
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    Risshaku-ji Temple or Yamadera which
  • 1:08 - 1:10
is directly translated at mountain temple.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
And at the top besides the temple
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    serving the residents and tourists
  • 1:14 - 1:16
alike is a red Japan Post box
  • 1:18 - 1:21
With pick-up time 11am six days a week.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
I always wondered who climbs up here to
  • 1:24 - 1:28
pick it up, that's over 12,000 steps each week.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    A real workout.
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    (music)
  • 1:32 - 1:34
And I found the man who has a most scenic
  • 1:34 - 1:36
and one of the most challenging postal
  • 1:36 - 1:38
routes perhaps in all of Japan.
  • 1:39 - 1:40
This is Sasahara San who has been on
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    this route for several years.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
He parks at the Yamadera Post Office
  • 1:46 - 1:48
and then hikes up the same as tourists.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
Autumn here is warm in the afternoon sun,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
chilly in the evening perfect hiking temperature.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
When you're carrying mail and packages and
  • 2:03 - 2:05
have to climb up a mountain it's a long way.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
Well, it's not that far away.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
Just 20 or 30 minutes to climb up.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
The temple was founded in 860 nearly 1200 years ago.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
An ancient hike that now has well-maintained
  • 2:17 - 2:19
stone and cement steps to the top.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
We'll end the episode at the stunning
  • 2:24 - 2:26
Godaidal observation deck and an autumn
  • 2:26 - 2:29
view of the mountain town below.
  • 2:29 - 2:30
It does look much more difficult
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    from street level though.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    (music)
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    11:59am
  • 2:39 - 2:42
We start the climb from under the torii gate.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
The real climbing in the forest starts here at
  • 2:58 - 3:00
the temple gate. Admission for non postal
  • 3:00 - 3:03
workers is 300 yen, open 9 to 5 daily.
  • 3:10 - 3:10
    Oh really?
  • 3:14 - 3:17
Take it step by step, but you have to
  • 3:17 - 3:19
stop and look around. There's no reason to
  • 3:19 - 3:21
rush it even when you have a postal route.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
Yamadera is one of the big attractions of
  • 3:26 - 3:28
Tohoku - it's really nice to get out of the city.
