6 Things We'll Remember the Switch 1 For - Delayed Input

  • Not Synced
KYLE: I've been supporting Donkey Kong's
    new look this entire time.
  • Not Synced
But if you're gonna turn him into some dad
  • Not Synced
    who's dabbing wrong on purpose
    to embarrass the kids,
  • Not Synced
I think you've taken it too far.
  • Not Synced
The Switch 2 is officially 2 weeks away,
which means tonight, we're kicking off with:
  • Not Synced
Now, with the Switch 2 being 2 weeks away,
  • Not Synced
that also means we are also only
2 weeks away from the Switch 1
  • Not Synced
    being absolutely obsolete.
  • Not Synced
There will simply be no reason
to have a Switch 1 anymore,
  • Not Synced
which is sad, yeah, but, you know, it's not
like I haven't been here many times before.
  • Not Synced
You know, when you got a Game Boy Advance
you didn't need a Game Boy Color anymore.
  • Not Synced
In fact, I remember back in the day,
when I got a Game Boy Advance,
  • Not Synced
I painted by Game Boy Color,
    'cause I never--
  • Not Synced
I never liked the color, like, the
deep purple color of a Game Boy Color.
  • Not Synced
So I painted it red with flames on it.
  • Not Synced
And I used the wrong kind of paint
    so it just, like--
  • Not Synced
It was-- It was crusty, right?
    And, like, it still worked
  • Not Synced
but it was bad to feel.
  • Not Synced
And so my cousin thought it looked cool,
actually, and I said, "Man, you can have it."
  • Not Synced
And then when I texted him tonight,
turns out he still has it.
  • Not Synced
    [HONK]
  • Not Synced
But really what I've been thinking about is
how we're going to remember the Switch 1
  • Not Synced
    in particular, right? Because--
  • Not Synced
Because so much of it is
carrying on to the Switch 2.
  • Not Synced
    Like, you might say,
"Well, the Switch 1 was really
  • Not Synced
    the birth of
    Nintendo really embracing indies."
  • Not Synced
    But I fully expect that
    to carry on, right?
  • Not Synced
It's not like there's gonna be
    a hard cut-off for that.
  • Not Synced
    So here are:
  • Not Synced
EDITING KYLE: Now, if at this moment
you're thinking, "Hold on a minute!
  • Not Synced
He said 7 but the title said 6.
  • Not Synced
    Did he cut one?
  • Not Synced
    Let me assure you, no.
    I didn't cut anything.
  • Not Synced
    I simply counted wrong.
  • Not Synced
    KYLE: Like how 'bout this:
  • Not Synced
    I know every time
you click on one of my videos,
  • Not Synced
    there's like a 50/50 chance I'm gonna
bring up Smash Bros. reveal trailers.
  • Not Synced
But it is 'cause I'm crazy about 'em, yes,
but I do feel like that era might be over.
  • Not Synced
    What happened during the Switch
    most of its lifetime, right,
  • Not Synced
was when you're watching a Nintendo Direct,
there's this danger and excitement that
  • Not Synced
something huge might happen in Smash Bros.
  • Not Synced
And I think you can feel it since
    that it's missing.
  • Not Synced
You can feel that lack of certain
electricity, you know what I'm saying?
  • Not Synced
Nobody's gonna be sweatin' at their desktop
wondering who's gonna join the race
  • Not Synced
    with the Kirby Air Riders.
  • Not Synced
This is the kinda thing I'm talking about
where you say to your friend, like,
  • Not Synced
    "Bro, do you remember Labo?"
Most of your friends won't remember Labo.
  • Not Synced
    You'll have to explain
    it was the thing where
  • Not Synced
you had to buy a box full of
    cardboard sleeves and rubber bands
  • Not Synced
    and you'd put 'em together
to make your Switch do weird stuff.
  • Not Synced
And what's weird is the vehicle one
had its own video game in there
  • Not Synced
that will now be accessible only
to people who own a Switch 1
  • Not Synced
and a bunch of cardboard and rubber bands.
  • Not Synced
Probably should've started with this one:
  • Not Synced
The Switch is a feel-good story.
I was recently watching E3 2015 for Nintendo
  • Not Synced
    and it's a rough show.
    It's tough to watch.
  • Not Synced
What's funny is they promised the NX is
gonna be good but not ready to show it yet.
  • Not Synced
    REGGIE: And our new dedicated
    game platform, codename NX,
  • Not Synced
which we'll tell you more about in 2016.
  • Not Synced
    KYLE: "So in the meantime,
    here's some absolute baloney."
  • Not Synced
And so with the Switch 1, with
    Nintendo getting their act together
  • Not Synced
and putting out a successful product
  • Not Synced
with some of the best video games
    they've ever made,
  • Not Synced
they get to show up on Jimmy Fallon--
  • Not Synced
    [Fallon laughs loudly]
  • Not Synced
-- it was great to see.
It felt like they really cleaned up.
  • Not Synced
And so the Switch 2 could be
just as successful as the Switch 1
  • Not Synced
but it's not gonna be, you know,
    that same story.
  • Not Synced
It's not gonna feel as good
    to watch it happen.
  • Not Synced
By the way, if you're wondering
    what the first comeback was,
  • Not Synced
    that's the Wii/DS.
That was the real dumb money era.
  • Not Synced
    How about:
  • Not Synced
    Maybe this is naive
but I wanna feel like that day is done,
  • Not Synced
the day in which it's COVID lockdown,
  • Not Synced
    you just wanna see
what kind of fossils your friend has
  • Not Synced
and you gotta go visit that dodo bird
and it takes a super long time to fly
  • Not Synced
    and then there's this cutscene
    of you landing.
  • Not Synced
    It's like a whole 8-minute rigamarole
just to make an online connection.
  • Not Synced
    Those games are done.
  • Not Synced
Animal Crossing Switch 2 it's just [snap].
    Trust me on this [snap].
  • Not Synced
It's gonna be like, [snap] "Ba-bow!
    I'm here."
  • Not Synced
Okay, I got a dark one:
  • Not Synced
I wasn't even familiar with the phrase
    "stick drift" until this generation.
  • Not Synced
    Like, you know, it's when
    one of your analog sticks
  • Not Synced
    is just kind of moving
just a little bit on its own.
  • Not Synced
You got this cursor that's just like,
"I'm not touching it. I'm not touching it.
  • Not Synced
    Stop! Stop!"
You know, that kind of thing.
  • Not Synced
And to be far, straight out,
  • Not Synced
    I know that PlayStation controllers
have stick drift too. Mine certainly did.
  • Not Synced
For that Edge controller, Sony will just
    sell you replacement analog sticks.
  • Not Synced
But I guess it just hurts so much more
    for the Switch because:
  • Not Synced
    1. Those analog sticks, you know,
    they are the console.
  • Not Synced
    It's basically the thing's functionality.
But also, they were so dang expensive.
  • Not Synced
    And not that we're done
    with expensive Joy-Cons, no.
  • Not Synced
But I gotta feel like this new era, this
    new generation of Switch 2 Joy-Con 2s,
  • Not Synced
stick drift will be a thing of the past.
    And you know what also?
  • Not Synced
    Switch Pro Controller, worst d-pad
    Nintendo has ever produced.
  • Not Synced
    I mean that.
You can't play Tetris with this.
  • Not Synced
    Meanwhile, Wii U Pro Controller,
    one of their best d-pads.
  • Not Synced
    What happened here?
  • Not Synced
And one last thing I think we might
remember about the Switch 1 is:
  • Not Synced
So just to rewind for a second,
    I had forgotten this entirely.
  • Not Synced
    When the Switch 1 released,
    when it initially launched,
  • Not Synced
it was free to play online games.
  • Not Synced
You didn't have to pay anything
to play Mario Kart 8 online
  • Not Synced
    because Nintendo wasn't ready yet.
  • Not Synced
And again, I forgot all this.
They even had to delay it.
  • Not Synced
It was supposed to come in 2017,
the launch year of the Switch.
  • Not Synced
But because it wasn't world-class yet,
Nintendo Switch Online got delayed to 2018.
  • Not Synced
    Meanwhile, back in 2016,
before the Switch is even released,
  • Not Synced
    Nintendo puts out:
  • Not Synced
Look at all these games in one tiny box.
  • Not Synced
And it was a big hit.
    And it was selling out.
  • Not Synced
And then, the year after that:
  • Not Synced
    which even included
the unreleased Star Fox 2. How cool.
  • Not Synced
    Another smashing success.
  • Not Synced
    What could they possibly
put out the year after that?
  • Not Synced
    N64 Mini?
  • Not Synced
You think it'll do Game Boys?
    What are they gonna do?
  • Not Synced
    Turns out, nothing.
Also, in 2018, the year after that,
  • Not Synced
NIntendo Switch Online was finally ready and
it came with its own classic game collection.
  • Not Synced
    No more free multiplayer.
    That's over.
  • Not Synced
    But, at least you're getting
    Solomon's Key.
  • Not Synced
Now, you might think connecting these
two things might be stretching it a bit
  • Not Synced
    but Reggie Fils-Aime himself
even basically confirmed it. He said:
  • Not Synced
So yeah, those sweet little mini consoles
were just too good for this world.
  • Not Synced
    They simply existed to
help Nintendo out in some down years.
  • Not Synced
    Not likely we'll ever see
    anything like that again
  • Not Synced
    unless the Switch 2
    is a catastrophic failure.
  • Not Synced
    And with Donkey Kong Bananza,
    that's simply not possible.
  • Not Synced
That's Delayed Input for this week.
    I'll be back next week.
  • Not Synced
    Until then, thanks for watching.
