Proud to be TED Translators | Mahmoud Aghiorly
-
0:01 - 0:03My name is Mahmoud Aghiorly
-
0:03 - 0:06and I am a volunteer translator with TED.
-
0:06 - 0:07I am from Syria,
-
0:07 - 0:11and I am from a city called Aleppo,
located in the north. -
0:11 - 0:14This city is an ancient city, actually --
-
0:14 - 0:17it's been there for 3,000 years.
-
0:18 - 0:20But now, within four years,
everything just vanished. -
0:20 - 0:26Most of my places, memories
and buildings that I love -
0:26 - 0:27are destroyed.
-
0:27 - 0:32They're just burned down,
or bombed, just ruined. -
0:32 - 0:35These places are not there right now.
-
0:36 - 0:39We will tell Adam so many stories,
-
0:39 - 0:43but actually, it's very difficult for us
that he can't live them. -
0:43 - 0:50And it touched me in my heart, actually,
as a woman and as a mother ... -
0:51 - 0:55that my baby will not have
the ability to visit ... -
0:57 - 1:00his father's place or his mother's place.
-
1:01 - 1:02So, yeah.
-
1:04 - 1:06Me and my brother are both civil engineers
-
1:06 - 1:11and we were dreaming of having
an engineering consultant office there -
1:11 - 1:16but the location
of the proposed engineering office -
1:16 - 1:19was in a heated area,
-
1:19 - 1:21so it was also mostly destroyed.
-
1:22 - 1:25So I think even your imagined future
-
1:25 - 1:27is destroyed or burned down.
-
1:27 - 1:30I spent around five years in Kuwait,
-
1:30 - 1:34then I emigrated
to Australia here by 2015. -
1:35 - 1:39We came here on November 2nd, last year.
-
1:39 - 1:40Everything was dark,
-
1:40 - 1:43and when the sun rose, it was a new life.
-
1:43 - 1:45Everything seems beautiful,
-
1:45 - 1:47everything is green, so many flowers.
-
1:47 - 1:50Nour AlHaj Yehia: We want Adam to live
in a better world. -
1:50 - 1:53We want him to have a great life.
-
1:54 - 1:58And I think that he was the main reason
-
1:58 - 2:03why we took that emigration decision.
-
2:03 - 2:05It was not an easy decision to take.
-
2:06 - 2:08Moving to another country
-
2:08 - 2:12that is totally different
than what we're used to -
2:12 - 2:13is not that easy.
-
2:13 - 2:15We are so happy right now,
-
2:15 - 2:17and we know that we did the right thing
-
2:17 - 2:19for us, and for Adam as well.
-
2:19 - 2:22Mahmoud Aghiorly: Starting from
February, till August, -
2:22 - 2:26I was searching every day
and sending around 10 or 12 CVs. -
2:26 - 2:29Actually, the main advice
was to change my name, -
2:29 - 2:32because "Mahmoud" sounds so traditional.
-
2:32 - 2:33The second advice
-
2:34 - 2:38was that they asked me
to hide my place of birth -
2:38 - 2:40and the origin of my certificate.
-
2:40 - 2:43They told me, "Don't mention
anything about Syria." -
2:43 - 2:45I didn't choose the country
that I was born in. -
2:45 - 2:47I didn't choose my name.
-
2:47 - 2:49So people are judging me
with things that I didn't choose. -
2:50 - 2:52I choose how I'm going to deal
with the problems. -
2:52 - 2:56And having a proper channel of new ideas
-
2:56 - 3:00is something very essential
for people who are coming from war zones -
3:00 - 3:03and people who are coming
from a lost past. -
3:03 - 3:07TED will provide you with
the proper channel of so many ideas -
3:07 - 3:09from so many people around the world.
-
3:09 - 3:13You can just directly relate to someone
faced with the same problem, -
3:13 - 3:16directly relate to someone
who just emigrated to another country, -
3:16 - 3:19you can directly relate to someone
starting a new family, -
3:19 - 3:20someone facing problems.
-
3:20 - 3:24Mahmoud has a great power
of loving and giving. -
3:24 - 3:27And I think volunteering --
-
3:27 - 3:28(Baby cries)
-
3:29 - 3:31is a way of loving and giving.
-
3:31 - 3:33Translating from a language
to another language -
3:33 - 3:35is a great power.
