Estimating large sums | 4th grade math (TX TEKS) | Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    - [Instructor] All right,
  • 0:01 - 0:04
    we're asked to estimate 87,149
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    plus 12,227.
  • 0:06 - 0:09
And this little curly looking equals sign,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    that means approximately equal to,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
or what is this roughly equal to?
  • 0:13 - 0:15
So pause this video and have a go at this
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    before we do this together.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    Alright, so I always like
    the problems with estimation,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
'cause it means that I can
kind of do things in my head,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
and there's not just one right answer.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    But when you have a
    multiple choice like this,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
you're just trying to find the answer
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    that's closest to your estimation.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
So we have two numbers here,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    and they're both, they're
    both go all the way
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    to the 10 thousands place.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
So I would feel good, we
    could either round this
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    to the nearest 10,000
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    or we could round this
    to the nearest thousand
  • 0:44 - 0:47
if we want to get a little
bit, a little bit more precise.
  • 0:47 - 0:48
I'm gonna round to the nearest thousand.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
So if we round this first
    number to the nearest thousand,
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    what's it going to be?
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    Well, it's closer to 87,000
    than it is to 88,000.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    So I'll just call this
    87,000, roughly speaking.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    And then 12,227,
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    once again, if you run
    to the nearest thousand,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    it's closer to 12,000 than 13,000.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    So it's approximately or roughly
  • 1:09 - 1:13
going to be equal to 87,000 plus 12,000.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    Well, what's 87 plus 12?
  • 1:15 - 1:19
    Well, 87 plus 12 is 99,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
so it's roughly equal to 99,000,
  • 1:22 - 1:26
which is exactly one of these
    choices right over here.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
And even if you got something
    a little bit different,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
like let's say that you wanted to round
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    to the nearest 10,000.
  • 1:32 - 1:37
    So then you would've had
    90,000 here plus 10,000 here,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    you would've gotten it
    roughly equaling 100,000.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    Even then, 100,000
  • 1:41 - 1:43
would've been closer to this last choice.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    Let's do another example.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    So pause the video and
have a go at this one.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    Alright, now for this one,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    the first number is in
    the tens of thousands
  • 1:53 - 1:56
or it has a 10 thousands place.
  • 1:56 - 1:57
But this other number is much smaller.
  • 1:57 - 1:58
We only go to the hundreds place,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    so it doesn't make sense
  • 2:00 - 2:02
to round to the nearest thousand
  • 2:02 - 2:04
or round to the nearest 10,000.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    And so let's round just
    to the nearest hundred.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
So if we did that, this
    first number right over here,
  • 2:10 - 2:12
if we round to the nearest hundred,
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    it's closer to 34,600
    than it is to 34,700.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
So let's call this 34,600, roughly.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    And then the second number,
  • 2:21 - 2:22
if we round to the nearest hundred,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    it's closer to 200 than 100.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    So this is roughly going
    to be equal to 34,600
  • 2:27 - 2:32
    plus 200, which would be
    34,600 plus 200 is 800,
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    which is once again, exactly
    one of the choices here.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    But even if you rounded
    a little bit differently,
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    you should probably still
    get a similar result.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
For example, even if you did
    round to the nearest thousand,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    which I wouldn't recommend,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
but if you did round to
    the nearest thousand,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    you would've gotten 35,000 here,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
and you would've gotten zero over here,
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    'cause zero, this is closer
to zero than it is to 1,000.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    But then you would've said
    this is roughly equal to
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    or approximately equal to 35,000,
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    which is still much closer
to choice B right over here
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    than these other choices.
