Activities for Getting Started with CAD (Onshape)

  • 0:00 - 0:03
I have just finished recording 23 videos that
  • 0:03 - 0:06
are designed to help you get started with CAD
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    quickly.
  • 0:07 - 0:12
The idea behind these videos is that we focus on a very simple object
  • 0:12 - 0:18
and then use it to show you all kinds of CAD operations and various CAD
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    techniques.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    Now there's 23 such videos,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    and
  • 0:24 - 0:26
if you decide to step through them,
  • 0:26 - 0:32
I'm convinced that you will learn essentially all of the basic CAD operations
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    you'll need.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
Now, let me tell you a little bit about how these videos go
  • 0:37 - 0:42
and give you a few insights before you start using them.
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    All right,
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    first thing is
  • 0:45 - 0:48
feel free to watch the videos that are helpful for you.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Don't watch the videos that are not helpful for you.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
I suggest watching them on 2x speed
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    if you can
  • 0:55 - 0:55
    and
  • 0:56 - 0:59
scrubbing around looking for the parts that you need.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    I think that will be
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    helpful.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    In each of the
  • 1:03 - 1:06
videos, there is a particular activity that's being
  • 1:06 - 1:09
done and the description of that activity is shown
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    in the video.
  • 1:11 - 1:16
In some cases, I read the words of the activity. In other cases, I kind of skip
  • 1:16 - 1:20
over it. Of course, if you need to look at the words of the activities, you can just
  • 1:21 - 1:24
pause the video and take a look at what's
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    there.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
The other thing that's going on in the videos is
  • 1:27 - 1:29
that I've just did them all in one take.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
So, they are what they are,
  • 1:31 - 1:31
    okay,
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    with
  • 1:32 - 1:32
    whatever
  • 1:32 - 1:35
small mistakes I may have made here or there.
  • 1:36 - 1:36
    Nevertheless,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
I did that on purpose hoping
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    that it would feel
  • 1:41 - 1:44
like you've come into my office and we're talking through
  • 1:44 - 1:46
how to do some of these activities.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
I think that you'll find them useful
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    in that way.
  • 1:50 - 1:50
    OK.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
What else do I need to tell you about this?
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    The
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    main
  • 1:58 - 2:01
challenge associated with this set of activities
  • 2:01 - 2:03
is that if you have in your mind
  • 2:03 - 2:05
that the only thing that matters is
  • 2:05 - 2:08
the correct geometry and the correct material assignment,
  • 2:09 - 2:10
then you can make this part
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    very quickly.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
But actually, that's not the goal of these videos and activities.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
The goal of the video and activities is to expose
  • 2:19 - 2:22
you to various ways of dealing with the CAD system.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
And so, it means that we're doing a lot of operations,
  • 2:26 - 2:30
some of which we would never really do on this simple
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    object
  • 2:31 - 2:33
that is the subject of these activities.
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    But that's okay.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    The point is
  • 2:36 - 2:39
to learn and to be exposed to these different
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    actions,
  • 2:40 - 2:45
not just to create the right geometry and have the right material assignment,
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    although that's important too.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    OK,
  • 2:48 - 2:48
    what else.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
I think there's one other thing that I wanted to say about this.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    And
  • 2:55 - 2:55
    ah,
  • 2:55 - 2:56
    after a long day,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
I'm having a hard time remembering what that is,
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    but nevertheless,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
here's where we're gonna leave it.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    These activities I'm confident
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    do expose you to
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    the
  • 3:08 - 3:11
actions and the techniques that are gonna show
  • 3:11 - 3:14
up again and again and again in the course
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    but also
  • 3:16 - 3:18
in your own CAD work. So,
  • 3:18 - 3:23
I recommend that you give this set of activities your best effort.
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    And as you do that,
  • 3:25 - 3:29
you're really setting yourself up for a really really good experience
  • 3:29 - 3:30
in the rest of the course.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    Okay, that's it.
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    Thanks so much.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
And as typically would be the case,
  • 3:36 - 3:40
the minute I stopped recording I remembered what that other thing was
  • 3:40 - 3:42
that I wanted to say about these videos
  • 3:43 - 3:45
and that is that you're gonna learn
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    a very important technique
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    relative to saving
  • 3:50 - 3:53
your files in a cloud-based system.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
And this is where we will be doing
  • 3:55 - 3:56
    versioning,
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    branching,
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    merging,
  • 3:59 - 4:02
and all of those kinds of wonderful things that
  • 4:03 - 4:05
aren't as complicated as they sound
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    but yet very,
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    very important to learn
  • 4:09 - 4:09
    not only
  • 4:10 - 4:13
in this course and in dealing with on shape but also
  • 4:14 - 4:16
just in dealing sort of in the modern
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    computing world. So,
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    I'm bringing this up because
  • 4:21 - 4:24
the shape that we're working with is so simple
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    it's not really required
  • 4:27 - 4:31
to be doing all the merging and actually branching
  • 4:31 - 4:34
and merging that we're doing in this set of activities,
  • 4:35 - 4:35
    but
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    the activities
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    are not about
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    that.
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    It's about helping you understand
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    what are
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    the versioning techniques,
  • 4:45 - 4:47
what are the merging and branching techniques
  • 4:48 - 4:50
that will be helpful when you work on more complex
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    models and more complex
  • 4:53 - 4:55
systems, which we're going to be at very,
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    very shortly
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    in
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    the course.
  • 4:58 - 4:58
    So,
  • 4:58 - 5:01
that was the second thing was just that there's versioning
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    and
  • 5:03 - 5:05
that's why we're working on this to expose you to
  • 5:05 - 5:07
that and to let you know how important that is
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    to the whole system.
