May 31 - Pioneering Faith in Japan

  • 0:01 - 0:02
    Hiizu (Hide) Kuniya
  • 0:02 - 0:06
was one of the earliest Japanese
    Seventh-day Adventist ministers.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
Kuniya was born in Japan in 1872.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    When he turned 20,
he was called for military service.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
In the military, he was led
    to become a Christian
  • 0:17 - 0:19
through the influence of a friend.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
Then he met an intern military doctor
    named Mokutarou Kawasaki.
  • 0:24 - 0:29
    Kawasaki attended English Bible studies
    presented by William Calhoun Grainger,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    the first official Seventh-day
    Adventist missionary to Japan.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    Kawasaki invited Kuniya
to attend the studies with him.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    Kuniya accepted the invitation.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    Studying the Bible fervently,
    he became convinced
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    that the Adventist message
    was the biblical truth
  • 0:46 - 0:48
and that Jesus was coming soon.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
Soon, he and Kawasaki were baptized.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    Following his baptism,
    Kuniya became engaged in outreach.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    He preached on the street,
    began colportering,
  • 1:00 - 1:01
and helped with the editorial work
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    of the first Seventh-day Adventist
    Japanese language periodical.
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    In the summer of 1900,
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    Kuniya supported the opening
    of the small "Kobe Sanitarium"
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    for poor Japanese people.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    This led the way
for a church to be planted.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    According to Kuniya,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    although the establishment
of the church had growing pains,
  • 1:21 - 1:25
for a while it was the center
    of the Japanese missionary work.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
In 1904, Kuniya met two Korean Christians.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    He told them
    about the Seventh-day Sabbath,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    and they accepted
the biblical truth and were baptized.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
This became the first Adventist work
    for Korean people.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
Kuniya went to Korea and engaged
    in the missionary work there.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    In 1907, he was ordained
  • 1:43 - 1:48
and became one of the first Seventh-day
    Adventist Japanese official ministers.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    Kuniya attended
    the 1909 General Conference Session
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    and reported about his ministry
    and experience in Japan.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    Like the Apostle Paul,
    Kuniya had a conviction
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    that it was his mission
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    to proclaim the gospel
    in unreached places.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    While doing colporteur work,
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    he established churches
    in many Japanese cities.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    In 1918, Kuniya was called
to advance the missionary work in Tokyo.
  • 2:13 - 2:15
As a result of his ministry,
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    the church grew significantly
    in this capital city.
  • 2:19 - 2:24
During World War II, the police arrested
    42 Japanese Seventh-day Adventists,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    including Kuniya.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
He was incarcerated for about six months
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    when it was discovered
he had both kidney and heart disease
  • 2:31 - 2:33
and was sent to a hospital.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    Fortunately, he recovered
    from his health ailments.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    Kuniya was exempted
    from prosecution and went free.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    After the war,
    he immediately began visiting
  • 2:42 - 2:46
    scattered believers and seekers
in local regions to encourage them.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
Pastor Hiizu Kuniya died in 1962.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    His faithful service to God
    laid a solid foundation
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    for the Seventh-day
    Adventist Church in Japan.
