So, what's the difference between
-
stretching and soft tissue mobilization?
-
One of the problems is we
-
don't define our terms.
-
When people say stretching,
-
what do you mean?
-
Do we mean taking myself to end range with
-
good organization and doing isometrics?
-
That's great stretching.
-
If I'm just sitting around near my end
-
range hanging on a tissue,
-
is that stretching?
-
Look, stretching is very safe and can feel
-
good,
-
but sometimes it doesn't take a system's
-
approach to address potential
-
restrictions in the entire system.
-
So, soft tissue mobilization
-
also can be a nebulous term.
-
We mean, is it restoring sliding surfaces?
-
Does it allow you
-
to address trigger points?
-
Is it improving blood flow?
-
Are we using it to mobilize a capsule?
-
All of those things can be aspects
-
of a simple systems approach
-
to soft tissue mobilization.
-
Typically, soft tissue
-
mobilization is a lot more active.
-
We've got isometrics, we've got contract
-
relax, we're integrating breathing.
-
But the same could be true if I was
-
adding those techniques to stretching.
-
But most of the time when people say
-
stretch, you know,
-
they go put something in and like I felt some
-
tension in there for an undisclosed,
-
undetermined range of motion
-
may not be as effective.
