Mind-blowing stage sculptures that fuse music and technology

  • Not Synced
These are sequences from a play called
    the Lehman Trilogy,
  • Not Synced
    which traces the origins
    of Western capitalism
  • Not Synced
    in three hours
  • Not Synced
with three actors and a piano.
  • Not Synced
And my role was to create a stage design
  • Not Synced
to write a visual language for this work.
  • Not Synced
    The play describes Atlantic crossings,
  • Not Synced
    Alabama cotton fields,
  • Not Synced
    New York skylines,
  • Not Synced
and we framed the whole thing
    within this single revolving cube,
  • Not Synced
    a kind of kinetic cinema
    through the centuries.
  • Not Synced
    It's like a musical instrument
  • Not Synced
    played by three performers,
  • Not Synced
and as they step their way
    around and through
  • Not Synced
the lives of the Lehman brothers,
  • Not Synced
    we, the audience,
  • Not Synced
    begin to connect with
    the simple, human origins
  • Not Synced
at the root of the complex
    global financial systems
  • Not Synced
that we're all still in thrall to today.
  • Not Synced
I used to play musical instruments
    myself when I was younger.
  • Not Synced
    My favorite was the violin.
  • Not Synced
It was this intimate transfer of energy.
  • Not Synced
    You held this organic sculpture
    up to your heart,
  • Not Synced
    and you poured the energy
    of your whole body
  • Not Synced
into this little piece of wood,
and heard it translated into music.
  • Not Synced
    And I was never particularly
    good at the violin,
  • Not Synced
but I used to sit at the back
    of the second violin section
  • Not Synced
    in the Hastings Youth Orchestra
  • Not Synced
    scratching away.
  • Not Synced
    We were all scratching,
  • Not Synced
and marveling at this symphonic sound
    that we were making
  • Not Synced
    that was so much
    more beautiful and powerful
  • Not Synced
    than anything we would ever
    have managed on our own.
  • Not Synced
    And now, as I create
    large scale performances,
  • Not Synced
I am always working with teams
  • Not Synced
that are at least the size
    of a symphony orchestra,
  • Not Synced
    and whether we are creating
  • Not Synced
    these revolving giant
    chess piece time tunnels
  • Not Synced
for an opera by Richard Wagner,
  • Not Synced
    or shark tanks and mountains
    for Kanye West,
  • Not Synced
    we're always seeking to create
    the most articulate sculpture,
  • Not Synced
    the most poetic instrument
    of communication to an audience.
  • Not Synced
    When I say poetic,
  • Not Synced
    I just mean language
    at its most condensed,
  • Not Synced
    like a song lyric,
  • Not Synced
    a poetic puzzle
    to be unlocked and unpacked.
  • Not Synced
    And when we were preparing
    to design Beyonce's "Formation" tour,
  • Not Synced
we looked at all the lyrics
  • Not Synced
and we came across this poem
    that Beyonce wrote.
  • Not Synced
"I saw a TV preacher when I was scared
at four or five about bad dreams
  • Not Synced
who promised he'd say a prayer
if I put my hand to the TV.
  • Not Synced
"That's the first time I remember prayer
as electric current running through me."
  • Not Synced
And this TV that transmitted prayer
    to Beyonce as a child
  • Not Synced
    became this monolithic revolving sculpture
  • Not Synced
    that broadcast Beyonce
to the back of the stadium.
  • Not Synced
And the stadium is a mass congregation.
  • Not Synced
    It's a temporary population
    of a hundred thousand people
  • Not Synced
who have all come there to sing along
    with every word together,
  • Not Synced
    but they've also come there
    each seeking one-to-one intimacy
  • Not Synced
    with the performer.
  • Not Synced
And we, as we conceive the show,
    we have to provide intimacy
  • Not Synced
    on a grand scale.
  • Not Synced
    It usually starts with sketches.
  • Not Synced
I was drawing this 60-foot-high revolving
    broadcast-quality portrait of the artist,
  • Not Synced
    and then I tore
the piece of paper in half.
  • Not Synced
    I split the mask
  • Not Synced
to try to access the human
    underneath it all.
  • Not Synced
And it's one thing to do sketches,
but of course translating from a sketch
  • Not Synced
    into a tourable revolving
    six-story building
  • Not Synced
    took some exceptional engineers
working around the clock for three months
  • Not Synced
until finally we arrived in Miami
  • Not Synced
and opened the show in April 2016.
  • Not Synced
    (Music: Beyonce's "Formation")
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
I call my work stage sculpture,
  • Not Synced
but of course what's really being sculpted
  • Not Synced
is the experience of the audience,
  • Not Synced
    and as directors and designers,
  • Not Synced
    we have to take responsibility
  • Not Synced
    for every minute that
    the audience spend with us.
  • Not Synced
    We're a bit like pilots
  • Not Synced
    navigating a flight path
  • Not Synced
    for a hundred thousand passengers,
  • Not Synced
    and in the case of
    the Canadian artist The Weeknd,
  • Not Synced
we translated this flight path literally
  • Not Synced
into an origami paper folding airplane
  • Not Synced
that took off over the heads
    of the audience,
  • Not Synced
    broke apart in mid-flight, complications,
  • Not Synced
and then rose out of the ashes restored
  • Not Synced
at the end of the show,
  • Not Synced
    and like any flight,
  • Not Synced
the most delicate part is the liftoff,
  • Not Synced
    the beginning,
  • Not Synced
because when you design a pop concert,
  • Not Synced
    the prime material
    that you're working with
  • Not Synced
is something that doesn't take trucks
  • Not Synced
    or crew to transport it.
  • Not Synced
    It doesn't cost anything,
  • Not Synced
and yet it fills every atom of air
in the arena before the show starts.
  • Not Synced
    It's the audience's anticipation.
