Not Synced
These are sequences from a play called
the Lehman Trilogy,
-
Not Synced
which traces the origins
of Western capitalism
-
Not Synced
in three hours
-
Not Synced
with three actors and a piano.
-
Not Synced
And my role was to create a stage design
-
Not Synced
to write a visual language for this work.
-
Not Synced
The play describes Atlantic crossings,
-
Not Synced
Alabama cotton fields,
-
Not Synced
New York skylines,
-
Not Synced
and we framed the whole thing
within this single revolving cube,
-
Not Synced
a kind of kinetic cinema
through the centuries.
-
Not Synced
It's like a musical instrument
-
Not Synced
played by three performers,
-
Not Synced
and as they step their way
around and through
-
Not Synced
the lives of the Lehman brothers,
-
Not Synced
we, the audience,
-
Not Synced
begin to connect with
the simple, human origins
-
Not Synced
at the root of the complex
global financial systems
-
Not Synced
that we're all still in thrall to today.
-
Not Synced
I used to play musical instruments
myself when I was younger.
-
Not Synced
My favorite was the violin.
-
Not Synced
It was this intimate transfer of energy.
-
Not Synced
You held this organic sculpture
up to your heart,
-
Not Synced
and you poured the energy
of your whole body
-
Not Synced
into this little piece of wood,
and heard it translated into music.
-
Not Synced
And I was never particularly
good at the violin,
-
Not Synced
but I used to sit at the back
of the second violin section
-
Not Synced
in the Hastings Youth Orchestra
-
Not Synced
scratching away.
-
Not Synced
We were all scratching,
-
Not Synced
and marveling at this symphonic sound
that we were making
-
Not Synced
that was so much
more beautiful and powerful
-
Not Synced
than anything we would ever
have managed on our own.
-
Not Synced
And now, as I create
large scale performances,
-
Not Synced
I am always working with teams
-
Not Synced
that are at least the size
of a symphony orchestra,
-
Not Synced
and whether we are creating
-
Not Synced
these revolving giant
chess piece time tunnels
-
Not Synced
for an opera by Richard Wagner,
-
Not Synced
or shark tanks and mountains
for Kanye West,
-
Not Synced
we're always seeking to create
the most articulate sculpture,
-
Not Synced
the most poetic instrument
of communication to an audience.
-
Not Synced
When I say poetic,
-
Not Synced
I just mean language
at its most condensed,
-
Not Synced
like a song lyric,
-
Not Synced
a poetic puzzle
to be unlocked and unpacked.
-
Not Synced
And when we were preparing
to design Beyonce's "Formation" tour,
-
Not Synced
we looked at all the lyrics
-
Not Synced
and we came across this poem
that Beyonce wrote.
-
Not Synced
"I saw a TV preacher when I was scared
at four or five about bad dreams
-
Not Synced
who promised he'd say a prayer
if I put my hand to the TV.
-
Not Synced
"That's the first time I remember prayer
as electric current running through me."
-
Not Synced
And this TV that transmitted prayer
to Beyonce as a child
-
Not Synced
became this monolithic revolving sculpture
-
Not Synced
that broadcast Beyonce
to the back of the stadium.
-
Not Synced
And the stadium is a mass congregation.
-
Not Synced
It's a temporary population
of a hundred thousand people
-
Not Synced
who have all come there to sing along
with every word together,
-
Not Synced
but they've also come there
each seeking one-to-one intimacy
-
Not Synced
with the performer.
-
Not Synced
And we, as we conceive the show,
we have to provide intimacy
-
Not Synced
on a grand scale.
-
Not Synced
It usually starts with sketches.
-
Not Synced
I was drawing this 60-foot-high revolving
broadcast-quality portrait of the artist,
-
Not Synced
and then I tore
the piece of paper in half.
-
Not Synced
I split the mask
-
Not Synced
to try to access the human
underneath it all.
-
Not Synced
And it's one thing to do sketches,
but of course translating from a sketch
-
Not Synced
into a tourable revolving
six-story building
-
Not Synced
took some exceptional engineers
working around the clock for three months
-
Not Synced
until finally we arrived in Miami
-
Not Synced
and opened the show in April 2016.
-
Not Synced
(Music: Beyonce's "Formation")
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
-
Not Synced
I call my work stage sculpture,
-
Not Synced
but of course what's really being sculpted
-
Not Synced
is the experience of the audience,
-
Not Synced
and as directors and designers,
-
Not Synced
we have to take responsibility
-
Not Synced
for every minute that
the audience spend with us.
-
Not Synced
We're a bit like pilots
-
Not Synced
navigating a flight path
-
Not Synced
for a hundred thousand passengers,
-
Not Synced
and in the case of
the Canadian artist The Weeknd,
-
Not Synced
we translated this flight path literally
-
Not Synced
into an origami paper folding airplane
-
Not Synced
that took off over the heads
of the audience,
-
Not Synced
broke apart in mid-flight, complications,
-
Not Synced
and then rose out of the ashes restored
-
Not Synced
at the end of the show,
-
Not Synced
and like any flight,
-
Not Synced
the most delicate part is the liftoff,
-
Not Synced
the beginning,
-
Not Synced
because when you design a pop concert,
-
Not Synced
the prime material
that you're working with
-
Not Synced
is something that doesn't take trucks
-
Not Synced
or crew to transport it.
-
Not Synced
It doesn't cost anything,
-
Not Synced
and yet it fills every atom of air
in the arena before the show starts.
-
Not Synced
It's the audience's anticipation.
-
Not Synced
Everyone brings with them
the story of how they came to get there,
-
Not Synced
the distances they traveled,
the months they had to work
-
Not Synced
to pay for the tickets.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes they sleep overnight
outside the arena,
-
Not Synced
and our first task is to deliver
for an audience on their anticipation,
-
Not Synced
to deliver their first sight
of the performer.
-
Not Synced
When I work with men,
-
Not Synced
they're quite happy to have their music
transformed into metaphor --
-
Not Synced
spaceflights, mountains.
-
Not Synced
But with women, we work a lot with masks
and with three-dimensional portraiture,
-
Not Synced
because the fans of the female artist
-
Not Synced
crave her face.
-
Not Synced
And when the audience arrived to see
Adele's first live concert in five years,
-
Not Synced
they were met with this image
of her eyes asleep.
-
Not Synced
If they listened carefully,
-
Not Synced
they would hear her sleeping breath
echoing around the arena,
-
Not Synced
waiting to wake up.
-
Not Synced
Here's how the show began.
-
Not Synced
(Video)
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
Adele: Hello.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
Es Devlin: With U2,
we're navigating the audience
-
Not Synced
over a terrain that spans three decades
of politics, poetry and music,
-
Not Synced
and over many months meeting
with the band and their creative teams,
-
Not Synced
this is the sketch that kept recurring,
-
Not Synced
this line, this street,
-
Not Synced
the street that connects
the band's past with their present,
-
Not Synced
the tightrope as they walk
as activists and artists,
-
Not Synced
a walk through cinema
-
Not Synced
that allows the band
to become protagonists
-
Not Synced
in their own poetry.
-
Not Synced
(Music: U2's "Where
the Streets Have No Name")
-
Not Synced
The end of the show
is like the end of a flight.
-
Not Synced
It's an arrival.
-
Not Synced
It's a transfer
-
Not Synced
from the stage out to the audience.
-
Not Synced
For the British band Take That,
-
Not Synced
we ended the show by sending
an 80-foot high mechanical human figure
-
Not Synced
out to the center of the crowd.
-
Not Synced
(Music)
-
Not Synced
Like many translations
from music to mechanics,
-
Not Synced
this was initially deemed
entirely technically impossible.
-
Not Synced
The first three engineers
we took it to said no,
-
Not Synced
and eventually the way
that it was achieved
-
Not Synced
was by keeping the entire control system
-
Not Synced
together while it toured
around the country,
-
Not Synced
so we had to fold it up
into a flatbed truck
-
Not Synced
so it could tour around
without coming apart,
-
Not Synced
and of course what this meant
was that the dimension of its head
-
Not Synced
was entirely determined
-
Not Synced
by the lowest motorway bridge
that it had to travel under on its tour,
-
Not Synced
and I have to tell you that it turns out
-
Not Synced
there is an unavoidable and annoyingly
low bridge just outside Hamburg.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
Another of the most technically complex
pieces that we've worked on
-
Not Synced
is the opera "Carmen"
-
Not Synced
and Bregenz Festival in Austria.
-
Not Synced
We envisaged Carmen's hands rising
-
Not Synced
out of Lake Constance
and throwing this deck of cards in the air
-
Not Synced
and leaving them suspended
between sky and sea,
-
Not Synced
but this transient gesture,
this flick of the wrists
-
Not Synced
had to become a structure
that would be strong enough
-
Not Synced
to withstand two Austrian winters.
-
Not Synced
So there's an awful lot
that you don't see in this photograph
-
Not Synced
that's working really hard.
-
Not Synced
It's all the ballast and structure
and support around the back,
-
Not Synced
and I'm going to show you the photos
that aren't on our website.
-
Not Synced
They're photos of the back of the set,
-
Not Synced
the part that's not designed
for the audience to see,
-
Not Synced
however much work it's doing.
-
Not Synced
And you know, this is actually the dilemma
-
Not Synced
for an artist who is working
as a stage designer,
-
Not Synced
because so much of what I make is fake,
-
Not Synced
it's an illusion,
-
Not Synced
and yet every artist works in pursuit
of communicating something that's true.
-
Not Synced
But we are always asking ourselves,
-
Not Synced
can we communicate truth
using things that are false?
-
Not Synced
And now when I attend
the shows that I've worked on,
-
Not Synced
I often find I'm the only one
who is not looking at the stage.
-
Not Synced
I'm looking at something
that I find equally fascinating,
-
Not Synced
and it's the audience.
-
Not Synced
I mean, where else do you witness this:
-
Not Synced
this many humans, connected, focused,
-
Not Synced
undistracted, and unfragmented?
-
Not Synced
And lately I've begun to make work
that originates here,
-
Not Synced
in the collective voice of the audience.
-
Not Synced
Poem Portraits is a collective poem.
-
Not Synced
It began at the Serpentine
Gallery in London,
-
Not Synced
and everybody is invited
to donate one word to a collective poem,
-
Not Synced
and instead of that large
single LED portrait
-
Not Synced
that was broadcasting
to the back of the stadium,
-
Not Synced
in this case, every member of the audience
-
Not Synced
gets to take their own portrait
home with them, and it's woven in
-
Not Synced
with the words that they contributed
to the collective poem.
-
Not Synced
So they keep a fragment
of an ever-evolving collective work.
-
Not Synced
And next year, the collective poem
will take architectural form.
-
Not Synced
This is the design for the UK Pavilion
-
Not Synced
at the World Expo 2020.
-
Not Synced
The UK.
-
Not Synced
In my lifetime,
it's never felt this divided,
-
Not Synced
it's never felt this noisy
with divergent voices,
-
Not Synced
and it's never felt this much
in need of places
-
Not Synced
where voices might connect and converge,
-
Not Synced
and it's my hope
that this wooden sculpture,
-
Not Synced
this wooden instrument,
a bit like that violin I used to play,
-
Not Synced
might be a place where people
can play and enter their word
-
Not Synced
at one end of the cone,
-
Not Synced
emerge at the other end of the building,
-
Not Synced
and find that their word has joined
a collective poem, a collective voice.
-
Not Synced
(Music)
-
Not Synced
These are simple experiments
in machine learning.
-
Not Synced
The algorithm that generates
the collective poem is pretty simple.
-
Not Synced
It's like predictive text,
-
Not Synced
only it's trained on millions of words
written by poets in the 19th century.
-
Not Synced
So it's a sort of convergence
of intelligence, past and present,
-
Not Synced
organic and inorganic.
-
Not Synced
And we were inspired
by the words of Stephen Hawking.
-
Not Synced
Towards the end of his life,
he asked quite a simple question:
-
Not Synced
if we as a species were ever
to come across another advanced lifeform,
-
Not Synced
an advanced civilization,
-
Not Synced
how would we speak to them?
-
Not Synced
What collective language
would we speak as a planet?
-
Not Synced
The language of lights
reaches every audience.
-
Not Synced
All of us are touched by it.
None of us can hold it.
-
Not Synced
And in the theater, we begin each work
in a dark place devoid of light.
-
Not Synced
We stay up all night focusing the lights,
programming the lights,
-
Not Synced
trying to find new ways
to sculpt and carve light.
-
Not Synced
(Music)
-
Not Synced
This is a portrait of our practice,
-
Not Synced
always seeking new ways
to shape and reshape light,
-
Not Synced
always finding words for things
that we no longer need to say,
-
Not Synced
and I want to say that this,
-
Not Synced
and everything that I've just shown you,
-
Not Synced
no longer exists in physical form.
-
Not Synced
In fact, most of what I've made over
the last 25 years doesn't exist anymore.
-
Not Synced
But our work endures in memories,
in synaptic sculptures,
-
Not Synced
in the minds of those
who were once present
-
Not Synced
in the audience.
-
Not Synced
I once read that a poem learnt by heart
-
Not Synced
is what you have left,
-
Not Synced
what can't be lost,
-
Not Synced
even if your house burns down
and you've lost all your possessions.
-
Not Synced
I want to end with some lines
that I learnt by heart a long time ago.
-
Not Synced
They're written by
the English novelist E.M. Forster
-
Not Synced
in 1910, just a few years
before Europe, my continent,
-
Not Synced
began tearing itself apart.
-
Not Synced
And his call to convergence
still resonates
-
Not Synced
through most of what
we're trying to make now.
-
Not Synced
"Only connect was the whole of her sermon.
-
Not Synced
Only connect the pros and the passion,
-
Not Synced
and both will be exalted,
-
Not Synced
and human love will be seen at its height.
-
Not Synced
Only connect and live
in fragments no longer."
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
