-
Hello, Anime Fans! I'm Ferus!
-
And sometimes the Anime and the Manga
happen to be different.
-
Every now and then these differences
can be more apparent.
-
And that's the case with
Phantom Thief Jeanne!
-
Now which are the biggest differences
between the Manga and the Anime
-
That's what we'll see right now.
-
The Phantom Thief Jeanne
Anime series is altogether
-
comprised of 44 episodes.
-
Now for some reason, and although
I rewatched the Anime two years ago,
-
I always think that it has
more than 70 episodes.
-
Now, of course RTL 2 aired the Anime
between August 27th
-
and October 26th 2001.
-
The Anime had come to an end in Japan
just a year and a half before that.
-
Specifically on January 29th, 2000.
-
But there was a problem: Arina Tanemura,
the artist behind Phantom Thief Jeanne,
-
still wasn't finished
with the Manga at the time.
-
And we all know what it means
when a Manga surpasses the Anime.
-
There are some changes.
-
And that hits Phantom Thief Jeanne
pretty hard on some aspects.
-
The main plot of the Anime stays
relatively true to the Manga.
-
It isn't as if Jeanne suddenly
began to throw Pokéballs at the demons.
-
Nevertheless, some minor and
even a few major storylines
-
were either changed or left out.
-
So let us dive in and see the
most noticeable of changes,
-
and the changes that will be
more interesting to those
-
who simply haven't read the Manga.
-
Let's begin with the characters!
-
Miyako, Maron's best friend,
often comes off as...
-
pretty hateful and cruel in the Anime.
-
She did have a sweeter side
with Maron, no doubt about that,
-
But every now and then I
cannot fathom idea of
-
why Maron is even friends with her!
-
In contrast, Manga Miyako is absolutely
assertive and full of will.
-
Which she shows in the Anime
when she puposefully goes after Jeanne.
-
But in the Manga we see it
more frequently
-
just how much Miyako relies on Maron.
-
These neat moments show precisely why
these two share a friendship.
-
Additionally, while in the Anime
she just helps the Police and her father
-
on their quest to bring
Jeanne to justice,
-
in the Manga she officially
plays the part of the Police.
-
Her father does not play any
important roles on the Manga.
-
In the Manga, the Police appears
more as a comic relief, really.
-
And it turns out that she've always
known that Maron is Jeanne.
-
Which she must painfully realise
in the Anime,
-
putting their whole friendship at stake.
-
Now let's talk about Chiaki.
-
His Anime personality doesn't differ much
from his Manga counterpart.
-
In his Anime version, he comes across
as flirtatious, almost obnoxious.
-
Undoubtedly, he also
flirts a lotin the Manga ,
-
but that comes across as nicer
and more romantic for the most part.
-
Especially when we follow the love story
between him and Maron.
-
In a direct comparison, the Anime version
is in hindisght quite lackluster.
-
Many of the sidecharacters also differ
more or less in details
-
that are not really relevant.
-
But in the Manga they noticeably receive
more and deeper development.
-
But the character that was downgraded
the most in the Anime version is Finn.
-
Her personality doesn't differ greatly,
-
but her backstory does change
quite clearly.
-
You guys surely remember the biggest
plot twist in the series:
-
that Finn betrayed Maron.
-
For the very simple reason
she was brainwashed by the Evil King.
-
At this point, it should be mentioned that
the Evil King is only called so in the Anime.
-
In the Manga he was Satan in person.
-
But why this was change was made?
We'll discuss it now.
-
Because in the Manga, Finn's story was
much more detailed and touching.
-
Yes, we find out that Finn was once
a human named Natsuki.
-
She lived with her brother on Earth,
who killed her out of greed.
-
Following that, she is reborn as an angel
and has no recollection of her human life.
-
When she, now as Finn, became an angel
of a certain level,
-
she was allowed on Earth with
a few other angels.
-
Yes, who could've guessed that
she would land by the man
-
who was once her brother.
