The Biggest Anime and Manga Differences In Phantom Thief Jeanne!

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Hello, Anime Fans! I'm Ferus!
  • 0:02 - 0:07
And sometimes the Anime and the Manga
    happen to be different.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
Every now and then these differences
    can be more apparent.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    And that's the case with
    Phantom Thief Jeanne!
  • 0:12 - 0:17
Now which are the biggest differences
between the Manga and the Anime?
  • 0:17 - 0:19
That's what we'll see right now.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    The Phantom Thief Jeanne
    Anime series is altogether
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    comprised of 44 episodes.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
Now for some reason, and although
I rewatched the Anime two years ago,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
I always think that it has
    more than 70 episodes.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
Now, of course RTL 2 aired the Anime
    between August 27th
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    and October 26th 2001.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
The Anime had come to an end in Japan
just a year and a half before that.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    Specifically on January 29th, 2000.
  • 0:44 - 0:49
But there was a problem: Arina Tanemura,
the artist behind Phantom Thief Jeanne,
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    still wasn't finished
with the Manga at the time.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
And we all know what it means
when a Manga surpasses the Anime.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    There are some changes.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
And that hits Phantom Thief Jeanne
    pretty hard on some aspects.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
The main plot of the Anime stays
    relatively true to the Manga.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
It isn't as if Jeanne suddenly
began to throw Pokéballs at the demons.
  • 1:10 - 1:15
    Nevertheless, some minor and
    even a few major storylines
  • 1:15 - 1:17
were either changed or left out.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
So let us dive in and see the
    most noticeable of changes,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
and the ones that will be
    more interesting to those
  • 1:22 - 1:23
who simply haven't read the Manga.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    Let's begin with the characters!
  • 1:26 - 1:30
    Miyako, Maron's best friend,
    often comes off as
  • 1:30 - 1:32
pretty hateful and cruel in the Anime.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
She did show a sweeter side
to Maron, no doubt about that,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
But every now and then I
    cannot fathom idea of
  • 1:39 - 1:42
why Maron is even friends with her!
  • 1:42 - 1:48
In contrast, Manga Miyako is absolutely
    assertive and full of will.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
Which she shows in the Anime
when she puposefully goes after Jeanne.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
But in the Manga we see it
    more frequently
  • 1:55 - 1:57
just how much Miyako relies on Maron.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
These neat moments show precisely why
    these two share a friendship.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    Additionally, while in the Anime
she just helps the Police and her father
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    on their quest to bring
    Jeanne to justice,
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    in the Manga she officially
plays the part of the Police.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
Her father does not play any
    important roles on the Manga.
  • 2:16 - 2:20
In the Manga, the Police appears
more as a comic relief, really.
  • 2:20 - 2:25
And it turns out that she've always
    known that Maron is Jeanne.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    A realisation she must painfully
    come to in the Anime.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
putting their whole friendship at stake.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    Now let's talk about Chiaki.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
His Anime personality doesn't differ much
    from his Manga counterpart.
  • 2:37 - 2:41
In his Anime version, he comes across
    as flirtatious, almost obnoxious.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    Undoubtedly, he also
flirts a lot in the Manga ,
  • 2:44 - 2:48
but that comes across as nicer
and more romantic for the most part.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
Especially when we follow the love story
    between him and Maron.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
In a direct comparison, the Anime version
    is in hindisght quite lackluster.
  • 2:56 - 3:00
Many of the sidecharacters also differ
    more or less in details
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    that are not really relevant.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
But in the Manga they noticeably receive
    more and deeper development.
  • 3:05 - 3:10
But the character that was downgraded
the most in the Anime version is Finn.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    Her personality doesn't differ greatly,
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    but her backstory does change
    quite clearly.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
You guys surely remember the biggest
    plot twist in the series:
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    that Finn betrayed Maron.
  • 3:20 - 3:24
For the very simple reason that
she was brainwashed by the Evil King.
  • 3:24 - 3:30
At this point, it should be mentioned that
the Evil King is only called so in the Anime.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
In the Manga he was Satan himself.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
But why this was change was made?
    We'll discuss it now.
  • 3:35 - 3:40
Because in the Manga, Finn's story was
    much more detailed and touching.
  • 3:40 - 3:44
We find out that Finn was once
    a human named Natsuki.
  • 3:44 - 3:48
She lived with her brother on Earth,
who killed her out of greed.
  • 3:48 - 3:53
Following that, she is reborn as an angel
and has no recollection of her human life.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
When she, now as Finn, became an angel
    of a certain level,
  • 3:56 - 3:58
she was allowed on Earth with
    a few other angels.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    And who could've guessed that
she would land by the man
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    who was once her brother.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    Without any memories
    of those previous times,
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    she first fells some sort
    of attraction for the man,
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    but the more the man
    showed his evil intentions,
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    the more Finn remembered.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    Which culminated in her rememebring
    her whole life as Nastuki.
  • 4:17 - 4:21
    Her former brother attacks her,
    and Finn kills him.
  • 4:21 - 4:25
It's clear that in Phantom Thief Jeanne
    God's angels aren't really supposed
  • 4:25 - 4:28
to be sent to Earth in order
    to kill people,
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    which is why she's ultimately
    banished and wiped out,
  • 4:31 - 4:33
which she uses as an argument
    to join Satan.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    You've may started noticing that
Finn's motivations differ from the Manga.
  • 4:37 - 4:43
    Alongside Finn Fish's downgraded plot,
    religion was also clearly diminished.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    I've already mentioned that
    Satan couldn't be Satan anymore,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    but rather the Evil King.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
But that's just the tip of the Iceberg.
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    Because God clearly plays
a more important role in the Manga
  • 4:54 - 4:58
In the Anime, Finn and Maron sometimes
    speak of the Lord,
  • 4:58 - 5:02
but He has almost no real relevance
    in the story.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
As expected, that changes when we
    look at the Manga.
  • 5:05 - 5:09
He personally appears in the seventh
volume to take Maron to heaven
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    so she can defeat Satan.
  • 5:11 - 5:15
    God even tells a story,
    that of the Original Sin.
  • 5:15 - 5:19
He even had a body of his own
and was in love with Eve.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
And created Adam just so he
    could protect her.
  • 5:22 - 5:26
But when He united Adam and Eve
    He was once again alone,
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    and the loneliness became stronger
    and stronger through the years,
  • 5:29 - 5:31
and at some point Satan was created.
  • 5:31 - 5:35
In the meantime, Eve dies at some point
and is reborn as Joan of Arc.
  • 5:35 - 5:39
    Which means that Maron,
as the reincarnation of Joan of Arc,
  • 5:39 - 5:43
is also the reincarnation of Eve,
    God's beloved.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
You may have noticed just how
    complex the whole thing is,
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    and you might now understand
why the Anime chose to keep things simple.
  • 5:50 - 5:54
Or they simply didn't know any better
because the 7th volume still wasn't out.
  • 5:54 - 5:59
Beside, they managed to remove these
big chunks of religion from the Anime.
  • 5:59 - 6:03
Which brings us to our next point,
    Jeanne's raids.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    I've already mentioned that
    in the Anime
  • 6:05 - 6:08
    no Pokéballs are thrown at
    the demons.
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    But there are still
    some differences.
  • 6:10 - 6:13
The most important of them being
    what happens to the objects
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    the Devil takes
    possession of.
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    And Jeanne takes him
    out of them.
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    Yes, in the Anime they
    disappear quite frequently,
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    and as to paintings,
    an empty canvas remains.
  • 6:23 - 6:27
In the Manga, the demons find themselves
    almost exclusively in images.
  • 6:27 - 6:31
Which was also the case in the Anime,
besides the use of other objects.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
Still on images, there is still
    one major difference.
  • 6:35 - 6:39
In the Manga they don't disappear,
as they change into images of Angels.
  • 6:39 - 6:45
    And their owners always found
the new picture to be nicer than before.
  • 6:45 - 6:49
    Then choosing not to report
    on Jeanne.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
In the Manga, Arina Tanemura did
tone down a bit the romance.
  • 6:53 - 6:57
    Things between Maron and Chiaki
are more straight to the point.
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    Specially in the final fight
    against Satan.
  • 7:00 - 7:06
    Arina Tanemura dedicated two whole
    pages to this intense encounter.
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    In the Anime, that's
    nowhere to be found.
  • 7:09 - 7:13
    Just like the very controversial
    scene with Noin.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
Both in the Anime and in the Manga
he tries to prevent Maron from
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    transforming into Jeanne.
  • 7:18 - 7:22
In the Anime, he simply decides
    to choke Maron.
  • 7:22 - 7:26
While in the Manga he becomes aggressive
and wants to rob Maron of her innocence.
  • 7:26 - 7:29
This would cause her to lose her purity
    and, because of that,
  • 7:29 - 7:32
    she could no longer transform
    into Jeanne.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    Luckily Chiaki could prevent
    both scenarios.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    Of course we still have
    a lot more to cover.
  • 7:37 - 7:41
    For example: Satan's motivation
is not only to weaken God,
  • 7:41 - 7:45
but to also stop Jeanne from
    reincarnating - Eve, that is.
  • 7:45 - 7:50
In the Manga, some big questions raised
    in the Anime are solved.
  • 7:50 - 7:53
    Such as Chiaki's father paying
    for his apartment.
  • 7:53 - 7:59
And how Maron only make ends meet
because her parents send her money.
  • 7:59 - 8:02
In the Manga, we get to see
a lot more of the two,
  • 8:02 - 8:06
    and how they became possessed
by demons, causing them to separate.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
Also the way Maron once again
    transforms into Jeanne
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    after Finn disappears
    occurs quite differently.
  • 8:12 - 8:15
In the Anime, that happens through
    Chiaki's collected chess pieces.
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    While in the Manga she
    has to time-travel.
  • 8:19 - 8:23
But by far the biggest and most serious
    changes are in the ending.
  • 8:23 - 8:27
In the Anime, there's a small fight
against many demons - which they win
  • 8:27 - 8:29
And even Finn is freed from
    her brainwash.
  • 8:29 - 8:35
But this very open ending still shows
Maron receiving a letter from her parents.
  • 8:35 - 8:38
We don't get to find out what's
going on between her and Chiaki.
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    What happens to Finn and
    even to Miyako.
  • 8:41 - 8:45
It feels as if there should be
    a sequence.
  • 8:45 - 8:48
    One that evidently
    never happened.
  • 8:48 - 8:50
In the Manga, however, we get
    a definitive conclusion.
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    Here Jeanne fights against
    Satan and wins.
  • 8:53 - 8:56
    But with one major difference.
  • 8:56 - 9:01
The Devil delivers one last blow to Jeanne,
    which Finn deflects.
  • 9:01 - 9:06
She dies on Access' arms, but receives
though Maron the gift of reincarnation.
  • 9:06 - 9:10
    Access wishes to reincarnate
    together with Finn.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
He leaves one of his earrings
    in her hand,
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    so he can recognize her
    after reincarnation.
  • 9:15 - 9:19
We even see Maron's parents reuniting,
and then there's one more timeskip.
  • 9:19 - 9:21
And then we have a true
    happy ending.
  • 9:21 - 9:25
Maron and Chiaki get to marry,
    just like Miyako and Yamato.
  • 9:25 - 9:30
The latter couple has a son named Shinji,
who's none other than Access reincarnated.
  • 9:30 - 9:33
    While Maron and Chiaki name
    their daughter Natsuki.
  • 9:33 - 9:37
    When Maron points to Shinji
that he can still recall his past-life,
  • 9:37 - 9:41
And that Natsuki holds a black earring
    in her hand,
  • 9:41 - 9:44
It's obvious that this is Finn.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    And now we have a
    pretty round ending.
  • 9:46 - 9:51
    Especially given that this reincarnation
cycle was either removed in the Anime
  • 9:51 - 9:54
    Or appeared in very
    washed out ways.
  • 9:54 - 9:57
    Unfortunately, the Anime couldn't
    follow through with it.
  • 9:57 - 10:01
Nevertheless, the Anime is still a lot of fun.
  • 10:01 - 10:07
But if you want to dive deeper in the material
and prefer a more intense experience,
  • 10:07 - 10:10
Then the Manga is your way to go.
  • 10:10 - 10:16
I'd personally find an anime remake
    of Phantom Thief Jeanne amazing.
  • 10:16 - 10:21
Of course, with the guarantee that
it would stick to the Manga this time.
  • 10:21 - 10:25
The chances are low, but one
    can still dream.
  • 10:25 - 10:29
If you've read the Phantom Thief Jeanne
    Manga or watched the Anime
  • 10:29 - 10:32
Leave a comment saying how you
    like both version.
  • 10:32 - 10:36
If you want to see more of Jeanne,
here's my "Cult Anime" video about it.
  • 10:36 - 10:40
    Thank you for watching and
we'll see each other next time!
