Welcome to MooMooMath and Science.
-
In this video,
-
I'd like to talk about the function of the gallbladder
-
and can you live without your gallbladder.
-
The gallbladder is a small organ
-
where bile is stored and concentrated before it is released
-
in the small intestine.
-
The gallbladder in humans is pear shaped
-
and is found beneath the liver.
-
The gallbladder stores bile,
-
which is created in the liver.
-
Bile is important for the digestion of food.
-
Fats in your small intestine like to stick together and form clumps of fat.
-
The bile breaks these clumps apart,
-
which helps the job of the enzymes in the small intestines easier.
-
Think a bile as the detergent you use when washing dishes after a really fatty meal.
-
After the liver produces bile,
-
it travels down the common hepatic duct
-
and into the gallbladder,
-
and the gallbladder secretes bile into the upper part
-
of the small intestines using the common bile duct.
-
Can you live without a gallbladder?
-
Yes.
-
A gallbladder may be removed for many reasons,
-
such as excessive gallstones or cancer.
-
The bile is rerouted from the liver into the small intestines.
-
The most common side effect from the removal of the gallbladder
-
is indigestion.
-
So, there we go,
-
the gallbladder,
-
a storage area of bile.
