Climate change: Earth's giant game of Tetris - Joss Fong
-
Not Syncedthink of the game Tetris.
-
Not SyncedFor eons Earth has played a version of this game with blocks of carbon.
-
Not SyncedThey enter the atmosphere as carbon dioxide gas from volcanoes,
-
Not Synceddecaying plant matter,
-
Not Syncedbreathing creatures
-
Not Syncedand the surface of the sea.
-
Not SyncedAnd they leave the atmosphere when they're used by plants during photosynthesis,
-
Not Syncedabsorbed back into the ocean
-
Not Syncedor stored in soil and sediment.
-
Not SyncedThis game of Tetris is called the carbon cycle,
-
Not Syncedand it's the engine of life on Earth.
-
Not SyncedWhat's the connection to climate?
-
Not SyncedWell, when that carbon dioxide is in the air,
-
Not Syncedwaiting to be reabsorbed,
-
Not Syncedit traps a portion of the sun's heat,
-
Not Syncedwhich would otherwise escape to space.
-
Not SyncedThat's why carbon dioxide is called a Greenhouse Gas.
-
Not SyncedIt creates a blanket of warmth,
-
Not Syncedknown as the Greenhouse Effect,
-
Not Syncedthat keeps our Earth from freezing like Mars.
-
Not SyncedThe more carbon dioxide blocks hang out in the atmosphere waiting to be cleared,
-
Not Syncedthe warmer Earth becomes.
-
Not SyncedThough the amount of carbon in the atmosphere
-
Not Syncedhas varied through ice ages and astroid impacts,
-
Not Syncedover the past 8,000 years the stable climate we know took shape,
-
Not Syncedallowing human civilization to thrive.
-
Not SyncedBut about 200 years ago,
-
Not Syncedwe began digging up that old carbon that had been stored in the soil.
-
Not SyncedThese fossil fuels, coal, oil and natural gas
-
Not Syncedare made from the buried remains of plants and animals
-
Not Syncedthat died long before humans evolved.
-
Not SyncedThe energy stored inside them was able to power
-
Not Syncedour factories, cars and power plants.
-
Not SyncedBut burning these fuels also injected new carbon blocks into Earth's Tetris game.
-
Not SyncedAt the same time, we cleared forests for agriculture,
-
Not Syncedreducing the earth's ability to remove the blocks.
-
Not SyncedAnd since 1750, the amount of carbon in the atmosophere
-
Not Syncedhas increased by 40%,
-
Not Syncedand shows no sign of slowing.
-
Not SyncedJust like in Tetris, the more blocks pile up,
-
Not Syncedthe harder it becomes to restore stability.
-
Not SyncedThe extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
-
Not Syncedaccelerates the Greenhouse Effect
-
Not Syncedby trapping more heat near the surface
-
Not Syncedand causing polar ice caps to melt.
-
Not SyncedAnd the more they melt, the less sunlight they're able to reflect,
-
Not Syncedmaking the oceans warm even faster.
-
Not SyncedSea levels rise, coastal populations are threatened with flooding,
-
Not Syncednatural ecosystems are disrupted,
-
Not Syncedand the weather becomes more extreme over time.
-
Not SyncedClimate change may effect different people and places in different ways.
-
Not SyncedBut, ultimately, it's a game that we're all stuck playing.
-
Not SyncedAnd unlike in Tetris,
-
Not Syncedwe won't get a chance to start over and try again.

There's a game of Tetris happening on a global scale: The playing space is planet Earth, and all those pesky, stacking blocks represent carbon dioxide -- a greenhouse gas that is piling up ever more rapidly as we burn the fossil fuels that run our cars, factories and power plants. Joss Fong outlines how this overload of CO2 leads to climate change and reminds us that, unlike Tetris, we won't get an opportunity to start over and try again.
